“It’s all good. We’re just one short for a short while.”

by @ 2:44 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Calipari met with the media for his pre-Auburn press conference this afternoon and Willie Cauley-Stein’s bad knee was the hot topic.  Calipari said it’s an old injury, one Willie suffered in junior high, and he probably could’ve continued playing on it with a sleeve over the knee but they decided to go ahead and get it taken care of now.  They’re presuming he won’t play against Auburn.

Cal said other guys will have to step up — he named Jarrod Polson and Jon Hood — and play in Cauley-Stein’s absence and they’ll just have to adjust to not being as big and long without him.

“It’s all good,” he said. “We’re just one short for a short while.”

  1. NIT Says:

    Here we come…

  2. ukmoxie Says:

Its just an old chalk drawing injury. He’ll be fine.

  3. Simple Stuff Says:

Back in the day they would rub some dity on it, use some linimint, and tape it up…… these kids, spoiled I tell you!

  4. RealCatsFan Says:

That title makes me picture Cal donning his best Alfred E. Neuman face while saying, “what, me worry?”

  5. Billy Gillespie Says:

    walk it off …punk

  6. bigbluejon Says:

Coach Cal– WCS is gone in 3 months. Why in the heck would you tell him to get surgery NOW? We’re 1 or 2 bad losses away from the NIT. And you pick NOW for surgery?

  7. lonnieb Says:

Are you really questioning the surgery. Im sure he just got it scoped…..no big deal…..his career is way more important than this season……#6 ou are the problem with UK fans…..that thought process is exactly why its embarrassing for me to always have to defend and say not all UK fans are stupid

  8. DoubleZeroMostel Says:

I understand this decision, I don’t like it, but I understand it. WCS will be in the NBA someday, maybe next year, maybe the year after. Either way, as a Coach, I would hate for the young man to try to play on a bum knee only to futher injur himself and potentially ruin his career before it began.

  9. RG III Says:

I wish Coach Cal was in charge of the Redskins

  10. Did I miss something? Says:

What about twany beckham? Is he really so far down the depth chart that he’s not even mentioned?

  11. bigbluejon Says:

7+8) I understand that, but with 1-and-dones you gotta milk ‘em for all there worth. A injury from junior high, that he could of played thru? Why now?

  12. Ryan Harrow's Flu Bug Says:

Surgery puts him out all year = no NBA draft for him = Back next year with the big dudes! Cal is smart I tell ya!

  13. I stayed at a Holiday Inn lastnight Says:

The residual swelling alone would not allow him to play 48 hrs later. Isn’t the team leaving for Auburn soon? If so, I doubt he even travels.

  14. Smitty Says:

11 – “Milk ‘em for all they’re worth”…..Really?….. Really? Becuase that’s looking out for the player. I know someone I would not send son to play for.

  15. I Say Says:

#8 you are correct. i.e. Sam Bowie

  16. the doctor Says:

#10 Beckham has been struggling with a bad back and tweaked it again a couple games ago. I cringe when I read “Cal said other guys will have to step up — he named Jarrod Polson and Jon Hood”. Now that is scary and evidence just how thin the bench is.

  17. party pooper Says:

mi, mi, mi, mi. hark, is that the fat lady i hear?

  18. In Yo Face! Says:

    #17 No it’s your momma

  19. Jake Says:

So, is Polson gonna stand on Hood’s shoulders to fill in for WCS?

  20. catlogic15 Says:

Jarrod Polson + Jon Hood = WCS?

Sheesh, no wonder we are where we are.

  21. UKJoe Says:

Been saying for a while now Polson needs to play over Archie and Hood plays over Poythress. Tomorrow we need Polson/Mays/Hood/Wiltjer/Noel to start.

  22. bung Says:

    Hood’s good…course he hasta b n the game to step up…

  23. Ridge Runner Says:

I’m not saying this will happen but we have all seen where something like this could be the spark that initiates the “Them getting it”.

At least…it’s there for the guys if they want to roll with it.

  24. Chi-TownCat Says:

Get well soon WCS we need ya big fella..but take care of yourself first you have a future to look out for

  25. Chi-TownCat Says:

The last game hood played in he knocked down a couple threes and I know he will hustle

  26. CoachCal Says:

#6, why would I have WCS get the scope now? BECAUSE ITS ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS, NOT THE PROGRAM. IVE SAID IT A THOUSAND TIMES, I PUT THE PLAYERS AND THEIR FUTURE FIRST. Damn son, wake up.

  27. Fedor' Says:

bung=Hood nut hugger…Does anyone think Poythress has a baseline addiction ?

  28. H.A. Milton Says:

@UKJoe, that starting lineup is just sad. @Fedor’, YES.

  29. paducahfan Says:

Players first. Not even an issue. I wouldn’t even bother to congratulate Cal for the decision because it’s so easy. Rick Pitino probably cost himself and the team a national championship by protecting a player. Good for them.
