Notre Dame released an official statement after Manti Te’o and his girlfriend from Neverland broke the internet today:

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

At first I thought this was impossible, and I still doubt it. But the way ND describes it, it COULD be true. BUT, that would mean that the girl in the pics, the one deadspin interviewed who said she was blindsided by Teo using her photos, would HAVE to be the one who pretended to be dead. Otherwise, Teo is lying.

I think the idea is he met a girl, and she supposedly lied to him about who she was and then faked a death for her fake identity. Or at least that would seem to be his story.

5- nope. a friend of te’o created the twitter account of the dead girl.
te’o had the “relationship” with this girl for over a year including many, many, long phone calls, the girl visiting the fam in hawaii.
very strange. te’o would have to be a complete moron to not realize it was a hoax.

There are two things that could have happened here. I’ll let you decide which seems more plausible.
A) Te’o had an unwitting “relationship” with a girl he thought to be this Kekua person, met a girl that looks exactly like (or strikingly similar to) the twitter photos after the Stanford game, talked to this same “actor” on the phone many times, this “actor” flew to Hawaii on her own dime to meet Te’o, and then faked a car crash, coma, leukemia, and “breathing in the morning after an 8 hour phone call”, and ultimately her death.

B) Te’o is lying.

Te O knew all about it, he was good friends with the guy that started the twitter acct, TeO wanted to build up a sob story to help him win the heisman and was probably supported by ND so they would get a Heisman winner pitiful

13). Nice. Still waiting to hear KSRs expose on Thamel’s completly fabricated story about the nature of this imaginary relationship. To anyone saying Teo was a victim- wojohowski who did a story on Teo in Sept., claims he asked Teo if he could contact the family and Teo said that the family didn’t want to be contacted. If he was being duped, wouldn’t he have at least said, “I’ll check with them?”
