Sports Illustrated gives Mark Stoops a B+ so far

Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel graded fifteen of the new hires in college football and Mark Stoops earned a B+ for his efforts so far in Lexington:

Kentucky: Mark Stoops, former Florida State defensive coordinator. It was not realistic to think the SEC’s doormat would land a big name (unless that name was Bobby Petrino). Stoops carries cachet from his time at FSU, where he produced top five defenses the past two years, and at Arizona and Miami before that. He already made one commendable move in hiring Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown to install the Air Raid that Kentucky formerly employed under Hal Mumme. Grade: B+

Since coming on board, Stoops has brought in eight commitments, including Za’Darius Smith, the class’ lone four-star recruit. With another big recruiting weekend coming up, more will surely follow. More so, he has changed the attitude surrounding the program, with fans buzzing and highly touted prospects giving the school a second look (I see you, Jason Hatcher). Nowhere was it more evident than at the Texas A&M game on Saturday when 20+ football recruits walked in and saw signs with their names on them in the student section, and stopped to take pictures and tweet about the fans’ support. Further proof that Stoops is leading a revolution? We’re talking about football in January.

I’ve got a G and I’m sitting on the the O, let’s go!

  14. 2020 Says:

I don’t believe a true INSIDER would be posting negative or dismissive information on message boards, even if it’s true. A true INSIDER would want to propogate only positives. Why else be an INSIDER if you’re not interested in creating a positive image for BBN?

  15. 2020 Says:

Very excited about Stoops. 2012 ‘Cats were realistically 4-8 in terms of player talent level, with poor schemes, poor play calling, poor adjustments, and poor motivation responsible for at least 2 losses, maybe 3. Take 3 options at QB, each of whom saw SEC experience this year, add in Neal Brown’s offensive prowess + Bob Stoops’ defensive capabilities, toss in an improved recruiting class, including some ready-to-go JUCO players, and you’re looking at 6 wins minimum despite a very tough schedule. Who’s not excited about this?

  16. Insider Says:

Im not being negative… It is reality. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

  17. Sin The' Says:

Is Bob Stoops now running the defense? Man, I bet OU fans are mad at us.

  18. loyal blue Says:

It would be nice if our writers knew we had more than one lone four star recruit. ESPN shows 3 current four star commits.

  19. bobby petrino Says:

I would have looked good in blue!! I’m so jealous!! Red is not the new blue!!

  20. wondering Says:

I think coach Stoops has done a fantastic job in the few weeks that he’s been at UK. I’m just wondering what it would have taken to get an “A” rating? Without walking on water I don’t think we could expect any more out of him and his staff in such a short time.

  21. Pikeville25 Says:

Yes, we have more than one 4 star recruit committed.

  22. Again.....and again.... Says:

Please stop using,(I see you, (insert name here)) in every post. Go Cats!

  23. ParanoiaWillDestroyYa Says:

“Insider” you aren’t the only troll I was referring to in post 7. I was really talking about post #1, but since you are so paranoid I will chalk you up as a troll too.

  24. NitPicker Says:

Hey Tyler, good post, but Stewart Mandel writes for Sports Illustrated, not USA Today. Even your link is to SI. Maybe USA Today stole it.

  25. Big Whoop Says:

I’m glad to see you put a link to your source of information. It gives you more credibiity rather the impression that you’ve simply made stuff up.

  26. Mrs. Tyler Thompson Says:

24 – I clearly wasn’t awake when I wrote this. Thanks for the heads up.
