3-star JuCo Nate Willis’ commitment is the fifth for the Cats in five days. It also boosts Kentucky’s 2013 recruiting class to #37 in Rivals’ rankings. That may not sound very impressive, but here’s a look at who the Cats are in front of right now:
Penn State
Oregon
Wisconsin
Michigan State
Stanford
Kansas State
Louisville
Arkansas
And we’ve only just begun.

January 16th, 2013 at 11:20 am
Rolling, rolling, hop on board, rolling, rolling, don’t get left behind, rolling, rolling, that BIG BLUE STOOPS TRAIN!!!
January 16th, 2013 at 11:33 am
That list puts things in perspective. Not too shabby at all!
January 16th, 2013 at 11:36 am
But only one good SEC team is behind us. Still better than every other year. And it’s only the beginning! Any idea what our highest rated FB recruiting class was? Go CATS!
January 16th, 2013 at 11:40 am
But we don’t play any of those guys.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:40 am
Dont want to be a Debbie Downer, but there is no way we’ll be in front of all of these teams after signing day
January 16th, 2013 at 11:41 am
This points out the problem with UK, we are still behind most or all of the SEC teams.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:45 am
Something has changed. Cal made UK the “IT” roundball school immediately. If football becomes even one of the top 25 “IT” schools annually Autumn and the Holidays will be so much fun….
January 16th, 2013 at 11:47 am
If you take average stars ito account were actually quite a deal higher. Close to top 25. If stoops can had 2, 3, maybe 4 more four star guys I cld definitely see us flirt with the top 25. And to #6. This list counts players who are committed not just signed. You here of people flip flopping or commiting on signing day but it’s not a majority. So I don’t see is losing a lot of spots or even falling from our current spot.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:47 am
i looked at this the other day and we were in the mid 60s
January 16th, 2013 at 11:47 am
Would love to see us get into the twenties by signing day. Just need a couple more big names. Would also like to see Steve Borden get evaluated. He is NR by most recruiting sites. His ranking (at least a 3 star) would rank us even higher.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:48 am
Ryan you have to throw in at least one “such as” to be taken seriously.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:54 am
I for one can’t wait till football season. Everyone on here needs to get out to the spring game and support this new staff and show them what kind of fans they have.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:55 am
He said, “25 it schools”.
Please learn how Rivals rankings work, quantity factors in.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:56 am
#11, i agree it’d be nice for borden to get evaluated, but the way Rivals team rankings work is they only grade every team’s top 20 rated signees. so, if borden still isn’t evaluated by signing day he won’t directly effect our overall score.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:57 am
Only two months on the job and we’re up 20+ spots. Can’t wait to see what these guys can do after winning more games, have a full recruiting season, and the upgrade of facilities. Bright times are ahead my friends.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:00 pm
Much better quality of recruits. However, UK’s class still ranked 13th out of 14 SEC teams. I know, I know… baby steps.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:02 pm
Wait a minute….we were all told that Joker was recruiting great classes. Shows you how low the bar had been set. Go get ‘em Coach Stoops!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
This is exciting! I knew the comments would be full of mongoloids talking about how this is not good news or good enough or whatever, but to anyone who actually had the mental capacity to graduate from UK (and not go back to their bumpkin town after flunking out from Haggin xbox sessions), this is really exciting.

Willis is the #69 ranked JUCO player in the country per ESPN. 5 ranked below him have committed to Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, Texas A&M, and Oregon. Pretty impressive pick up

@7, the problem is that the sec is super tough! A team could be pretty far down the list in the sec, and still be pretty darn good, go cats!!!
January 16th, 2013 at 12:19 pm
If we are able to pick up a couple four stars late it could put us ahead of mizzou, tennessee, miss. st., and possibly auburn.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:20 pm
#21 And that is why the SEC is a tough place for UK to be. So UK could be down the list in recruiting rankings, but improve on the field performance. We could slaughter 3 OOC teams, beat UofL even, but recruiting rankings (I know you can’t always go by that, but still pretty reliable indicator) would still suggest UK is going to be 10th – 14th in the SEC standings. So a “pretty darn good” UK team could finish 5-7 due to competing in the SEC, although being lots more competitive. Such is our lot in life. LOL

Passing Mississippi State and Missouri are possible but Tennessee and Auburn both have only 18 and 15 signed respectively so it would take a major coup of a couple of players to pass them once both get their full load of players. This isn’t basketball recruiting, remain even keeled and let it play out.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:42 pm
great news but unlike bball total number of commits in fball is one reason for high or low rankings. i like to look at the average star column which for us is 3.0 which is pretty good.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:51 pm
We were in the 70′s under Joker. Stoops dropped a couple of kids and has landed 8 really good kids! Of which 3 or 4 are rated 4-star by other services. If we land 4 more 4-star kids, we’ll move up a lot more. Which I think is realistic. We may get more then that. UL doesn’t plan on signing a big class. I’m still thinking a top 20 class. I’m wondering about player limits?! We may end up signing 30 kids or more. Do Jucos count against your class? We have what? 4 so far? With a couple more in line?! One kid outa HS is enrolled now. I expect a little more attrition then usual soon, so we may have more scholarships open up. I know one SEC school has like 35 on their commit list?!
January 16th, 2013 at 1:03 pm
for MustangCat:
No we won’t end up signing 30. The SEC limit is 25 LOIs. A school can get around this limit if they have undersigned the previous year and then enrolled players in Dec/Jan. By doing so, those can count against the prior year’s limit. This is known as backcounting.
I know that’s haw UGa will be able to sign over thirty this year, assume it’s the same of TX A&M.
We, however, used all 25 of ours last year so can’t backcount the three who enrolled early. So, we can only take 25. And yes, JC’s count against the limit.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:51 pm
That’s good for 12th in the SEC… Soooooooooooo there’s that.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:56 pm
Being 37th in the country is good and all, but being 12th in the SEC isn’t. When that list of schools inlcudes teams from the SEC, particularly schools from the SEC East, then Stoops and Co. are getting something done. They aren’t finished recruiting, though, and with their current pace I like their chances of continuing to move on up. Go Cats! And Go Krogering! (I see you John Short!)
January 16th, 2013 at 3:43 pm
@23 ur funny! Lol. You kinda helped make my point. Notre dame was ranked number one, and you seen wat bama did to them. No, we arent gonna be winning the sec any time soon, but we competed with some of the better teams in the sec under mumme, so if stoops can improve our defense, as well as our offense, then i dont see why we cant compete with the top half of the sec in a couple years,. Go ahead, im waiting for your smart aleck answer.
January 16th, 2013 at 3:51 pm
@23 5-7record? What was mummys records when we were much more competitive than we are now? Was it not a lil better than 5-7?
January 16th, 2013 at 4:03 pm
@23, not sure bout you, but i have always though it was better to be pretty good rather than to stink!
January 16th, 2013 at 4:41 pm
That list of the teams we’s ahead of is bullhockey. We got most of our recruits already, and those teams don’t. Not to mention the fact that Louisville is returning almost their whole team who just won the damn Sugar Bowl beating a team we haven’t been able to beat in 27 tries. I don’t want to say Stoops isn’t going to do anything good for us because he definitely can’t do any worse than Joker. I’m just saying we’d do well to calm down about this coming season. I’m betting on a 4-8 record next year with three wins in the SEC. Hey, better than none.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:40 pm
would like to know who your 3 wins in the SEC are? Or are you one of the KSR sunshine pumping writers with absurd preseason prognostications. This July and August should be epic on this site–can’t wait!
January 16th, 2013 at 6:31 pm
Living in Louisville, I’ve been bombarded daily with reports of how Louisville recruiting is KILLING IT! I now find out UL is behind powerhouses like Houston and Indiana????????
January 16th, 2013 at 6:45 pm
I can’t wait personally…..After three years of the JOKE, I’d say we are all ready to get this season started…I have been looking at it like this. Everyone was anxious to welcome Missouri and Texas A&M to the SEC, and out of nowhere TA&M pretty much welcomed their selves. So anything can happen with some motivated players and the right staff.
January 16th, 2013 at 9:37 pm
10. Last week we jumped to 41. Stay up with your reading or get off the Stoops Troops Train!
January 16th, 2013 at 9:38 pm
Oregon will lose some recruits now that Chip Kelly is leaving for Eagles! Unless they get someone to fill his shoes quick!
