Tonight is Kentucky’s first appearance on ESPN’s “Super Tuesday,” which means it’s also the first time Jimmy Dykes will grace our TV sets. Dykes has made a name for himself on the college basketball scene with his rather, ehm…unique metaphors for gameplay, which often rhyme. At home, I envision him sitting at his desk in a Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat hat, thumbing through a thesaurus trying to come up with yet another way to say “drive the nail.”
Last year, Jimmy was particularly infatuated with Jarnell Stokes, the talented Tennessee forward that chose the Vols over the Cats last spring. Stokes’ first game as a college player was against Kentucky, a fact which Jimmy came back to time and time again. He’s only practiced four times! He doesn’t know the plays! They don’t have a shoe to fit his size 20 foot! He barely even knows how to stretch, y’all. Stokes went on to score nine points in that game, but as far as Jimmy’s concerned, he was barely even capable of dressing himself afterwards.
Now that Jarnell’s a sophomore who has mastered stretching, I have a feeling Dykes will focus more on his “Jimmy’s Jet” segment, in which he tells viewers who he thinks is in and who he thinks is out of the NCAA Tournament. Fasten your seat belts, folks!
The entire nation wants to know”@philyphatstacks: @jimmydykeslive is UK on jimmys jet??”

Where will he put the Cats? The baggage compartment?

Does anybody think we have a chance to make the tourn or win tonight. I don’t. My confidence in this team is gone.

Could someone with more time on their hands than me please post info about next year’s scholarship numbers? How many schollies do we have available next year? How many incoming freshmen do we have (currently 6 I think)? What would happen if Harrow/Poythress/Goodwin/WCS stayed? Thanks
January 15th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
There is so much negativity surrounding this team right now that I started to wonder if everyone had seriously forgotten how terrible the end of the Tubby years and the two Gillespie years were. Then, I realized that most of the people turning on this team are the millions of bandwagon fans who have hopped on board since Cal arrived.
Yes, this team has struggled early but this group still has a high ceiling. If they reach their potential, you idiots will shut up and stay on the bandwagon. If they don’t, the real fans will still watch every game and enjoy these guys while they are here and we will be better off when the bandwagoners run away, hopefully for good.

He will 100% menion how he was on the staff at UK in the 80′s and possibly even show the team pic from that year.

Love Jimmy Dykes. Dude is a good guy.

Go CATS! Man UP!
January 15th, 2013 at 1:30 pm
I went to high school at Blazer with a guy named Jimmy Dykes. I know this can’t be the same person, although they look similar. He thought he was a vampire and tried to bite my neck once. You never forget something like that…ever.

Not so sure we should be on “Super Anything” at this point in the season.

7. I could be wrong but this is just a quick throw-together. There are 13 scholarships available in any given year. Scholarships are rewarded year to year so some players that have scholarships this year may go back to walk on status if necessary to make room.
These are just guesses but player status for next year may look something like this:
Lost to graduation– Twany and Mays
Walk-ons– Malone, Long, Lanter, and possibly Polson if necessary.
Very likely to return with scholarship– Hood and Wiltjer.
Then out of the other 5 that even have a slight chance of going Pro (Noel, Goodwin, Poythress, WCS, and Harrow) I expect maybe 3 to stay (WCS, Harrow, and Poythress would be my best guess.)
Obviously this is all guesswork but that would be 5 scholarship players leaving room for 8 more. We have 6 signed now so room for 2 more out of the Wiggins, Randle, Gordon group.
Once again, some of this could be wrong and it is alot of guesses at this point but I hope this helps!

#6…rim runner? I’m not sure if I got insulted or complimented. Haha…Go Cayts!
January 15th, 2013 at 1:37 pm
Violent Cuts, the band we hipsters listened to way before you losers made them popular. I just typed that very ironically and in a non-conformist way, because that’s what we do after we brush the hair out of our eyes.
January 15th, 2013 at 1:38 pm
Stokes was a late offer from Cal, almost an afterthought. Stokes took offense and went with UT. IIRC, there was no real recruiting effort made by UK. As for Dykes, he’s a UK guy but he comes up with all these lame sayings.
January 15th, 2013 at 1:40 pm
Jimmy is sure to mention the time he spent coaching at UK and tell that same story about how he slept on a couch in his office and that couch once belonged to Coach Rupp.

#15, it was a compliment
…just tryin to use the lingo when I can, even if at random times.

Flog the log!
January 15th, 2013 at 1:42 pm
Isn’t he the cautious close-outs guy?
January 15th, 2013 at 1:42 pm
How about:
“I don’t know basketball”
“Someone take my mic away”
“My voice is more annoying the Ryan Harrow’s”
“I will never call a game of any great signifigance”
January 15th, 2013 at 1:47 pm
14. You accidently forgot Wiltjer and Hood when you added your total
Hood, Wiltjer (which you did mention)
Noel, Harrow, WCS, Goodwin, Poythress
6 current recruits
That leaves room for zero additions if everyone stayed
January 15th, 2013 at 1:49 pm
My bad #14, you were saying two “if” three stayed, misread that
January 15th, 2013 at 1:51 pm
Gee, I sure do like that Louisville team. They are number one aren’t they?
January 15th, 2013 at 1:51 pm
wku vs uL last year, “win the 4 minute games”
January 15th, 2013 at 1:53 pm
just for the record im a fan of jimmy
January 15th, 2013 at 1:53 pm
Don’t let Terrence Jones go to his left. You can’t let him go to his left.
January 15th, 2013 at 1:57 pm
the second mouse gets the cheese…..
January 15th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
24. Yeah I don’t see any possibility of Noel staying and out of WCS, Goodwin, and Poythress I think at least 1 or 2 of them could join Noel and go pro. They would all get drafted way higher than they should just based on size and potential alone. Also, I think Harrow is the least likely out of those 5 to go Pro but I threw him in there as a slight possibility just because he is going to lose alot of his playing time next year to the twins and Young so he might make the jump earlier than he should.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:00 pm
#29, The second mouse gets the cheese, but only after the early bird rises earlier than the tortoise which beat the hare.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:00 pm
ESPN is really trashing UK right now on the experts. All four analysts don’t have them making the tourn. Says they will lose 6-7 more games. One of the worst teams in the SEC. Said they will lose tonight. Can’t say I disagree.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:03 pm
Experts on ESPN say that we drafted all the wrong freshmen. Out of the top freshmen we picked the worst ones. Say that none will do anything at the next level especially Noel. Said he will go high in draft but will be a huge bust.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:07 pm
All I can say is… Those that can’t play – coach. Those that can’t coach – talk like they know everything… I almost always turn the TV down during games, no matter who is talking…
January 15th, 2013 at 2:10 pm
8) I totally agree. Some fans are just plain over the top. We won a championship last year for Gods sake. When the pre-season polls came out and had us in the top 3, I was floored. How can you expect for a team with no returning starters and no bench except for Wiltjer coming back to be a top 3 team? Coach Cal has earned a mulligan or two so ease up and support these kids the best we can and hopefully some of these kids will come back and improve their games and add some depth to next years class and we’ll go from there.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:15 pm
30 – agree. prob doesnt help harrow to stay another year.
goodwin’s size allows him to play the 1 or 2 at nba level so he will prob. get drafted 1st round. his D & jumpshot should improve some. nba can always teach players to shoot.
would another year actually improve wcs’s draft stock? maybe, but if he’s only playing 20-25 min again next year then he’s doing same thing as this year & will need tp improve.
safe to say if this team goes to sweet 16 of better many of them should go.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:31 pm
36. Agree with all of that. Only thing I would bring up is Harrow might stick around next year and take the hit to playing time and then hope to be back as a starter his senior year and pair up with Towns.
Also, if this team pulls it together enough to go to the sweet 16 or even farther (which I still think is possible) they will probably ALL ride that momentum and go pro.
January 15th, 2013 at 2:33 pm
noel poythress goodwin cauley stein….all will be gone…mark it down
however nerlens and willie are the only two playing up to their capabilities….poythress and goodwin are the reasons this team is behind the curve. they are young and immature, but they have incredible talent.
If all 4 put it together by March…
BUCKLE UP

Drive the nail
January 15th, 2013 at 2:51 pm
Jimmy Dykes is the best. I always look forward to whatever wild euphemism he invents for each season. I’ll forever associate “violent cuts” with Meeks’ 54 point game. Great day.
January 15th, 2013 at 3:01 pm
Stokes couldnt come to ky., we dnt have a scolly. Its.not that he wanted too go to tenn. As much as we didnt have room for him.
January 15th, 2013 at 3:11 pm
I believe Cal gave the last scholly to Polson that year and then Stokes decided to enroll in the Spring semester instead of the next fall so we didn’t have any space available for him.
January 15th, 2013 at 3:13 pm
Dykes, Vitale, Knight, Bromley…all are reasons I got a Sport Sync radio for my birthday last year, just in time to switch it on before the football games too…
January 15th, 2013 at 3:38 pm
I’m waiting for a Dykes Dikes segment. Maybe with Rosie, Ellen, and Pat Summit
January 15th, 2013 at 4:19 pm
My favorite is “Caboose the Shoe”. I think he meant to “follow the dribbler through a screen ” or some such.
January 15th, 2013 at 6:06 pm
My favs: Guard the yard and they are playing with HOUSE MONEY! Let the drinking games begin!
