—  The Tennessee game is just a few hours away and at least one person, Jarnell Stokes, has a lot riding on the game.  Back in the summer, Stokes said he plans on winning in Rupp Arena this year.  ”It’s definitely different this year,” he said of the Round 2 in Lexington.  That day is finally here and John Calipari hasn’t forgotten Stokes’ comment.  He’s using it as a motivational tool for his players entering tonight’s game.  ”Alright.  How do we take on that challenge?”

—  Tennessee is averaging 65.2 points per game this season, good enough for 236th best in the nation.  The Vols failed to reach 40 points in two games this season.

—  Tennessee enters tonight’s game on a three-game losing streak.  A loss tonight and Tennessee will have its first 0-3 start in the SEC since 1998.

—  According to Jonathan Givony at DraftExpress.com, Alex Poythress is 100% gone after this season.  Givony tweeted, “No chance.  He’s 100% gone, I’m told.”  DraftExpress currently projects Poythress to go No. 7 in the 2013 NBA Draft, one spot ahead of teammate Archie Goodwin.

—  Regie Meant is the newest member of your University of Kentucky football recruiting class, as reported earlier today by Justin Rowland of Rivals.com.  Meant, a defensive tackle, isn’t a highly-touted recruit but Mark Stoops and the staff like his potential and versatility on the defensive line.  He’ll need some work — he didn’t play organized football until his sophomore year — but he has the frame and athleticism to potentially become a playmaker in the 4-3 defense at either position on the line.

—  On this morning’s radio show, Mike Pratt joined Matt Jones in studio to co-host and they took a call from Bomani Jones in the second hour to discuss John Calipari.  Have a listen to the podcast at TalkRadio1080.com.

Go Cats.

Guess this was posted a bit early…

  4. TN Cat Says:

Drew started the drinking game a little early tonight.

    Nice work Drew.

Great post! I really like the part

Great. Now 1 – 6 look dumb ^^^, and I didn’t need the help, Drew.

  8. CasualFan Says:

Stone Cold is watching the game tonight http://vimeo.com/54575988

  9. MN CAT Says:

I don’t see how Poythress could be selected 7th in the draft, unless his game improves radically between now and the end of the year. That’s not meant to bash Poythress. I just don’t see that he’s shown enough–even enough potential–to go anywhere near that high. Here’s hoping that changes tonight.

  10. JLP Says:

With all the high hopes and merely decent performances, will Alex really go that high? I hope so, as I root for all UK players. But it’s just hard for me to see anyone other than Nerlens going in the top 10. I know they draft on potential, but c’mon, you expect to see that potential exhibited. Not putting anyone down as these are mostly freshman & are under a microscope. Wish them all well…

  11. NIT unbound Says:

I just dont understand how poythress scores 20 points in 4 straight games (one being a dominant performance against duke) then declines ever since.

  12. UKJoe Says:

Who the hell does Alex think he is?

  13. Doug Says:

Alex is built like Tarzan but plays like Jane. If he thinks this kind of effort will get him to the NBA he’s kidding himself. See how MKG is struggling in the NBA. He would work circles around Alex. Alex would be in the “D” league after one month. The kid needs to understand what kind of effort he needs to bring day in day out…

  14. capt Says:

If AP is good enough for top 10 in the nba draft, I’m good enough to play for UK. Prove me wrong, AP. I sincerely hope you do.

  15. H.A. Milton Says:

Poythress is ALREADY %100 gone…thats why he plays like he does. You can see him thinking about what he is going to buy with that NBA loot.

  16. tom5673 Says:

interesting…poythress was dropped out of the first round on nbadraft.net. nerlens was projected #4, willie #9, archie #13 (i believe). but no poythress. i agree with everyone else…i know they draft on potential, but how any of our freshmen besides nerlens are first round picks is beyond me. weak draft or not.

  17. Smitty Says:

    Mashburn Stats as a FR.

    12.9 pts/game
    7.0/ rebs/game
    1.5 assists/game
    1.3 steals/game

    47.4% shooting

    Poythress
    13.4 pts/game
    6.3 rebs/game
    .5 assists/game
    .5 steals/game

    63.2% shooting, 41.2% 3 point shooting

Better than Mash in some categories and just off in others……. The only difference now that in Mash’s day, guys go pro early and develop in the NBA or D-leage….. No more staying for 3 – 4 years, and that is okay. Teams in the NBA draft on talent and potential, not necessarily on their stats as a freshman.

  18. Enough with the draft talk! Says:

If Cal truly believes this is a players 1st program than he needs to get these players to come back until they’re prepared for the NBA. These guys are leaving unprepared and immature and ending up in the D league on their way overseas!

  19. bosshog Says:

I think that’s good news for UK….Poythress doesn’t have the desire and Goodwin isn’t focused on making those around him better and doing all the little things that it takes to win every game. It sounds like the Harrison Twins are intensely competitive, and I think its much easier to hone that than to try to confront this apathy and indifference to the team and the tradition. I just wish we weren’t also losing Noel……..I love him and think he would be the ultimate compliment to next year’s class.

  20. bmt22033 Says:

You can’t ignore the fact that a player’s potential often weights heavily in their draft stock but at the same time, if you’re an NBA GM, how do you look at Alex Poythress and conclude that he’s worth a lottery pick based on what you’ve seen thus far at Kentucky? Yes, he was an All-American and Mr. Basketball in the state of Tennessee. And yes, he’s got an NBA physique. It seems reasonable that expectations of him would be high but so far, he’s definitely under-performed. Do you attribute that to the college coach? The college team? What would make you think he’d produce better results in your organization than he did in college?

  21. soggyUKgrad Says:

17…the biggest difference is when when Mash was a Freshman the team leader was Reggie Hanson(SR)…also had Pelphrey(JR) who was all-SEC that season. Mash wasn’t asked to do a whole lot. the pressure for freshmen to perform right away in today’s game is totally different. Poythress has to grow up a lot faster than Mashburn did. If this were 1990 we would accept Poythress’s lackluster effort as a freshman learning how to play college ball.

  22. Steve Says:

    Well said #19

  23. Steve Says:

Alex Poythress=Richard Madison for all the old-timers.

  24. Troy Says:

I’m stunned Poythress doesn’t want to take more verbal assaults from Cal

  25. Troy Says:

#17 – Which way are Poythress’s numbers trending? How did Mashburn’s numbers trend over the year? See the difference? How about Nerlens? His last game was his best game.

  26. Richard P Says:

I wished that Alex would leave right now and prepare for the draft. UofK would be better off with out him anyway.

  27. Duuuuuude Says:

    23…..exactly.

  28. putinrichie Says:

I don’t even know if Poythress is the 7th best player on UK. Draft Express is crazy and I guarantee that Poythress doesn’t go in the lottery if he leaves UK after this season.

  29. Esteban Says:

I wish some of these guys would learn how to play the game before going pro. I don’t think they’re much into teaching basic fundamentals in the NBA. But if someone is going to throw you a suitcase full of cash, I’m sure it is hard to resist.
