Regie Meant is a Cat

by @ 12:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

According to Rivals’ Justin Rowland, Regie Meant has committed to the Cats. Meant is a 6’5″ 271 lbs. defensive tackle/defensive end from Cape Coral, Florida. Meant committed to the Cats while visiting this past weekend and plays almost every position on the defensive line, something that is hard to find. Although he’s only rated two-stars, you can’t teach size and that’s something this guy was blessed with. He chose the Cats over Iowa State, NC State, and Kansas State.

Welcome to the fam, Regie.

Here are some highlights from Regie’s junior year:

  2. Sir Brandon Says:

Welcome, Regie. Prepareth for bad Army puns from the journalists.

  3. jjk Says:

    It was Meant to be.

  4. ChicagoCat Says:

Not a bad list of offers right there. Welcome to BBN Regie!

  5. rationalizer Says:

Cue the obligatory “but he’s a high 2 star” comments. Or “it doesn’t matter what he’s rated, look who offered him”. I have nothing against this kid, but he will be looked at as a prized recruit under Stoops. Under Joker, he’d be thrown under the bus already.

  6. west coast bias Says:

Asiantii Woulard has an offer from UCLA and has set up an official visit:

  7. ChicagoCat Says:

5 – Very true. Stoops’ honeymoon = Diamond in the rough recruit. If this were Joker it would be “Oh here we go again with the 2-Star

But I’d rather take the positivity than all the negativity we had all year. At least there’s that.

  8. SoFLCat Says:

I have faith in the ability of Stoops to recognize d line talent and if they think he is worthy of an offer I trust them. Go Big Blue!

  9. G-Unit Says:

5- Wrong man, Joker wouldnt have even offered or found this kid. He is closer to 6’6-290… been playing organized football for just over a year… you take your chances with this kid. When you are that big and can almost clear a 5.0 in your 40 you have some athleticism…. just a matter of learning the game.

  10. G-Unit Says:

6- UCLA is too far from him, he just taking the official for fun… if you were 18 and had a chance to go to LA for a weekend for free wouldnt you do the same? UCLA is not a big player in his recruitment. Id be more worried about Clemson.

  11. Stickman Says:

“rationalizer” are you trying to say we should have kept Joker? From what we’ve seen so far, this is the only commit we’ve had since Stoops got here that Joker would have had a reasonable chance of landing. You DO realize we have nowhere to go but up? It is not humanly possible for Stoops to recruit or coach any worse than Joker did. You’re also the same guy that thinks Cal should be fired because we aren’t ranked number #1 right now.

  12. Jason Says:

I love how all these kids we’re getting, the other offers are from other BCS schools. Sounds much better than stealing recruits from the Kent States of the football world.

  13. Drew Says:

So what’s are chances with Woulard now that ucla has offered???

  14. theWilkman Says:

The difference between Joker and Stoops in this instance is Stoops and his staff are great judges of DL talent and potential, not to mention ability to develop. Joker…not so much. How many seasons in a row was the line supposed to be the strength?

  15. Drew Says:

Ok so do u think Clemson leads for Woulard???

  16. Kneel Says:

Who cares about star ratings. College recruiting is about systems, coaches, and players working together. That’s what Joker never got. Stoops does. So if Stoops feels this kid can fit into and buy his system, he will develop and excel. Welcome aboard, and I look forward to seeing how this works out. It appears Stoops is able to develop kids and put the pieces together, not just recruit kids and throw them on the field.

  17. rationalizer Says:

Nope not saying we should have kept Joker. Just an observation. Kind of like when you see UK signed this kid or that kid and then see a list of what schools the kid chose UK over. Take this guy. Post above says he chose UK over Iowa St or Kansas St. True, but look at the other offers he had. Ball St, Bowling green, Middle TN. In other words, the kind of recruit people were freaking out about when Joker signed him. Your points about Joker are true. I am simply making the observation because UK will struggle this coming year and we’ll see if the “positivity” for Stoops will last. No, I don’t think Cal should be fired. In fact, I’m giving him a complete pass with this team. Hope that he realizes he will need veteran leadership from here on out though.

  18. rationalizer Says:

#12 LOL, go look who offered this kid on Scout or Rivals.

  19. Go cats Says:

Who cares. Lets talk about cats getting bounced in the first round of the tourn. THE NIT TOURN.

  20. sunnycat Says:

Never thought I would ever live to see the day when football is the only bright spot during basketball season.

  21. Stickman Says:

I don’t think anyone with any sense of reality can expect Stoops to make us an SEC contender in the next 3-4 years; but with Joker we had an idea of what to expect while Papaw Brooks was still here, since Joker pretty much called the shots the last year or so. That means we knew in advance he probably wasn’t going to pan out. Then, once Joker was the official head coach, we steadily declined, as could have been predicted. With Stoops here less than three months, we are already getting visits from higher level recruits. Joker couldn’t even get them on campus. Go back through the archives of this blog or any other and see how often it was reported that top level prospects were coming to UK even for a visit. True, we may not be signing them just yet, but like others have pointed out, we couldn’t even get them to look our way if they were being recruited by true football schools in the past. Momentum has to start somewhere. Baby steps.

Hell, as much as I had doubts about Gillispie, I was willing to give him 2-3 years after the stagnation of Tubby; and rebuilding a basketball team is a much quicker process in a fair to middlin’ basketball conference than rebuilding a football team in the undisputed leader of the college football conferences. We’re practically playing NFL farm teams each week in the fall.

  22. rationalizer Says:

#21 Good points. So if Stoops can’t be expected to make UK an SEC contender within 3-4 years, what do you predict will happen? Will he get 7 years as Joker suggested his successor should get, or will he be asked to move on and UK will reboot yet again. Agreed that he is getting better recruits to visit. Hopefully he can sign a handful. I will be really curious to see what happens after his first season. All coaches have a honeymoon period. UK will struggle next year — no fault of this staff. New system, still playing with Joker’s players, and guess what… the schedule is what it is. So will Stoops be able to keep attracting better recruits after his 1 year honeymoon? we will see.

  23. G-Unit Says:

The thing is you have a lot of fans on this site that are Basketball fans first and apply all of their knowledge of basketball recruiting to football recruiting. They are 2 different things entirely. People see this guy and his 2 stars and say “well he aint no good, he aint gonna help us next year”…. He isnt being recruited to help next year. This guy has redshirt written all over him. You give this guy, who has played football for barely over a year a chance to spend an entire year working on his body and learning the game and 2- years from now you will have a solid 2nd string guy, and 3-4 years you will have a starter. This is a DEPTH BUILDING recruit. This is how recruiting is supposed to be done. Joker failed to do this and Brooks wasnt too good at it either… both recruited solely on needs and that is why we had the peaks and valleys. This guy in Stoops’ mind wasnt recruited for next year… he is thinking 2015/2015. The two places you need the most depth in football is on the offensive and defensive line… thats where you build your foundation… take as many as you can see that fit your system. That way you eliminate the peaks and valleys and maintain steadiness in the success of your program. Stoops is doing this the right way, and I cant wait to see the benefits 2-3 years down the road.

  24. Fur eel Says:

Fun to see uk beat bcs teams for recruits instead of the Mac/sunbelt.

  25. Nothing important Says:

Kid looks like a giant Allen Iverson.

  26. Stickman Says:

I think with Stoops he has to be given a little more time than Joker had, for two reasons:

1.) We had a preview of what to expect with Joker since he was already here as OC and “Head Coach-in-waiting.” With Stoops, we can go back and see what he did at FSU, but that’s not the same as seeing on the sidelines of our team week-in and week-out.

2.) Joker took a team that was at the “mediocre bowl” level and actually downgraded it from a marginal 5-6 win-per-season team with a rare 7 win season thrown in under Brooks, to a 2-10 team that got beat by teams from both the Sunbelt Conference and the Big Least. That’s a mighty big hole to dig out of in 3-4 years in this conference. As much good as Brooks did for us compared to where we had been, it would have still been a big job for Stoops to move us up into the “consistently competitive” ranks (say equal with where South Cackalacky is right now with the Old Ball Coach) if he had taken over as soon as Brooks retired. Instead, Stoops got double jeopardy by having to fix Joker’s problems.

And in honor of Spurrier here is a flattering photo of him:

  27. Duuuuuude Says:

Is his name really Regie Meant or is that like a nick name? Regiment?

  28. nattie lite Says:

bobby petrino may be getting a bunch of 1 star recruits and a few 2 stars. how do you think they will do in his system? they will excel. it is the system and coaches more so than the players for schools like UK. developing kids and teaching them your system will keep UK competitive. we can’t get a boat load of 4 and 5 stars and there are only 10 schools in the nation that sign “all” 4 and 5 star players. that leaves over 100 programs fighting for 2-3 and an occasional 4 star player. the ratings are total crap though because coaches take that talent and beat many schools with higher rated players.

  29. BBN Says:

The kid looks like a young LL Cool J. Welcome to BBN!

  30. dave Says:

only visited uk, ksu, & wsu. didnt get offers from uofl or wva & supposed to visit ncstate on 25th.
if he can really run a 4.7 at 275lbs+ then the kid is worth a redshirt. we’ll see

  31. Doo Doo Brown Says:

I love how the redneck morons in our fanbase revert everything back to Joker. Gillispie got a pass on all his BS the first year and a half because those same clowns hated Tubby. Even if losing to Garder Webb, San Diego, and Vandy by 40 was worse than anything Tubby ever did he still got a pass.

We should judge based our coaches based on our standards and expectations regardless of your hatred for the former coach. Joker’s name shouldn’t even get brought up in these discussions because he doesn’t matter. Our standards are the only thing that matters.

  32. rationalizer Says:

#28 wku does not play in the sec either. so how often do coaches take 2* players and beat an sec team with any consistency? not very often. kudos to stoops if he actually signs SEVERAL of the 4* visitors. And more credit to him and his staff if they can coach in the sec with 2/3 * talent, cuz that is going to be the bulk if his roster. gonna be tough because sec’s powers are pairing up very good coaches with 4/5 *’s as majority of their roster.

  33. bluristhurr Says:

    ^ is stupid

  34. rationalizer Says:

#28 also, those 10 teams that sign ‘all’ 4/5 * players? about 6 of them are in our sec.

  35. Spot on Says:

23 makes some great points. His ranking is low due to his lack of experience (only played 2 years in HS) and size – good DTs are usually at least 290 lbs, and he has been listed as low as 260 lb on some sites. Give him a redshirt year to gain 20 pounds and you’ve got a solid player.

And 5) I know you are being sarcastic – but that’s the thing – it doesn’t matter what his ranking is, and the offers ARE way more important.

One thing I wonder is how much Brumbaugh and Eliot scouted and recruited Meant, because those guys have had D-Line draft picks over the last few years. If either were involved, I trust their judgment of talent.

  36. G-Unit Says:

34 – How do you then explain Texas A&M. Team last year didnt have 1…. not 1 4-star prospect at any of the skill positions???? They didnt even have a top 50 defense and they were a heartbeat away from winning the West…..

THAT WAS ALL ABOUT THE SYSTEM, THE COACHING AND THE EXECUTION……NOT THE STARS

  37. Richie Farmer Says:

Hey coach, is Reeeegie gonna play tonight?

  38. Big Whoop Says:

Since Stoops is a defensive coach, I have to give him a pass on this particular 2 star. I am assuming that he will be a redshirt in order for development. He has taken visits to Washington St. and received an offer, he had a visit scheduled to NC State on 1/26/13 (no offer), and he had visits to Iowa St and Kansas St who both offered.

I, personally, don’t care for 2 star offers. The reason is that the big dogs don’t make offers to 2 star players unless they really need a punter or kicker. If you look at the Rivals teams rankings and commitments, you will see that the top ten recruiting classes rarely recruit 2 stars. USC, Alabama,Texas,Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Clemson have NOT offered a 2 star. Michigan has offered one – a Long Snapper. Ohio State has offered one – a Kicker.

My philosophy is that if you want to be one of the big dogs, you absolutely MUST do as the big dogs do. This is Stoops’s first year and he hasn’t had a whole year to recruit. Right now, I’m fine with whatever he wants to do. He obviously sees something here (potential?) that I don’t see. I rely on ratings and rankings and make no apologies for that. Meant is a Rivals unranked 2 star and isn’t rated or ranked by Scout or ESPN. The fact that he is a lineman is another reason Stoops gets a pass because they are so hard to come by.

  39. Stickman Says:

If ever someone was dumb enough to not see the forest for the trees, it would have to be “Doo Doo Brown.” I haven’t seen anyone in this thread mention anything remotely related to a hatred of Joker. Leave the sports talk to the adults, dumb ass.

  40. Doo Doo Brown Says:

    Hear those hit dogs yelping?

  41. MustangCat Says:

Kids actual name is “Riginald Always Meant”! No joke! Said today that he’s officially adding “tuGoTu UK” as a last name!? No joke!

  42. MustangCat Says:

    Ok, ok. It’s a joke.

  43. Stone Says:

Here’s a video of him from his senior year. Looks pretty solid to me. Lots of potential.

  44. Stone Says:

  45. i'm #34 Says:

#36 yeah, a half dozen SEC teams are usually top 10 recruiters with 4/5 stars dominating, some 3 stars and that’s about it. Texas A&M had a once in a lifetime player in Manziell, as evidenced by his being the only Freshman to win the Heisman ever. So if UK got a Manziell, would that make a difference. Sure, you only have to look about 70 miles west at Bridgewater. He was about a 4 game swing for UofL. True, A&M surprised everybody and did compete for the SEC West and beat Bama. So you pointed out an exception. A rare one. How many times does a team “with no 4 star skill players” as you said win the SEC? ASk Bama, LSU, FL — all teams littered with 4/5 star players. By the way, Texas A&M may not have had 4* skill players. I’ll take your word for it. But they did have the #25 ranked class in 2010, #30 in 2011, #21 in 2012. In those three classes, they had two 5* players and eleven 4* players so I’m guessing that helped a bit. Texas players, like FL and CA recruits are head and shoulders above similarly ranked players from say KY or probably even OH. Ask Urban Meyer if he would rather have the speed he was getting at FL vs. the OH kids.

  46. G-Unit Says:

Dono if anyone knows a whole lot bout weights but I just read as a Junior Regie power cleaned 275lbs…. THATS INSANE FOR A HIGH SCHOOLER. His senior year he got up to 295lbs…. and has been supposedly clocked at running a 4.9-40. Thats some serious athleticism….very inexperienced, but ver athletic
