Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…
After Kentucky won its eighth National Championship, Cal was already looking ahead to the next brass ring: an undefeated season. His best chance may come with next year’s squad, which includes what many are calling the best recruiting class ever, one capable of achieving a perfect record and the school’s ninth National Championship. During the SEC teleconference this morning, Cal was asked if he thought an undefeated season was attainable:
“I hope so, and I hope it’s us, but it’s a very difficult thing. One, you have to have a talented team. Two, you have to have veterans. Three, they have to be a mental tough team that’s really in tune with each other. In other words, they have to buy in.”
Cal used last year’s team as an example of what happens if you can get all three of those ingredients together, but it took the loss at Indiana, that squad’s “crisis,” to get everyone (okay, Terrence Jones) fully on board.
Is it possible for a team to buy in without going through a crisis? I can’t wait to find out.

#1 I think you’re forgetting about Dakari
January 14th, 2013 at 1:13 pm
The guy from this year’s team that everyone would love to see back is the one guy who simply CANNOT pass up the draft since he will be going No. 1. Damn.
January 14th, 2013 at 1:13 pm
@1 you are forgetting about the #13 overall player in that class, Dakari Johnson

Former Tennessee coach Kevin O Neill let go by USC today. Does anybody get fired more than that guy?
January 14th, 2013 at 1:16 pm
Yeah, Johnson will be alright, but next years team with Noel would be epic

2 things:
Are we already giving up on this season? I was hoping next years team would be chasing our 10th title not our ninth.
I am expecting an undefeated season next year but we really do not need to put that much pressure on the guys. Let them enjoy it and not crush them with expectations.

Notice that Cal specifically said “veterans” when saying what it would take. Any talk of going undefeated next year is foolish unless a few of the pieces on this years team are back. If we lose 4-5 guys to the NBA off this years team than I’m not sold we can go undefeated next year.

This picture amazes me. The twins & James Young look like little kids in front of the other two..yet they are 6-6/6-5, incredible size in this picture.

Well said #7

#6 Lol how can you say he will be “alright” you have yet to see the kid play a game. Who’s to say he won’t be better than nerlens?
And all this talk of an undefeated season seems foolish. That is setting the bar at near impossible expectations, who cares of we go undefeated? As long as we win it all…

If WCS or AP stays we will be great! Don’t forget Harrow, if he keeps improving vocally, he can be our MKG leader. I do not remember this years team being all buddy buddy like this pic shows. I think there is too much I in this T-E-A-M! Is it just me or does Goodwin try to take over a game if we are winning and he is not scoring much, then he turns it over so much we lose? that is what i saw against Texas A&M.
Hopefully NOEL gets these guys together!

You guys are fooling yourselves if you think Noel will be back. He’s gone. As are both Goodwin and Poythress if you ask me – it’s clear the NBA drafts on potential and upside more than anything else. A kid’s college stats don’t mean hardly anything, just look at Orton.
And 11 is right, let’s quit talking about the being undefeated – a championship is the goal. Plain and simple.

That being said, I’ll gladly eat crow if any of those 3 return… I just don’t see it happening. Plus I think there’s a good change WCS is gone as well – the league scoops up athletic 7-footers whenever they can.
In any case, it will be good to have Harrow and Wiltjer off the bench next year… some veteran presence.

All talk of an undefeated season should be out the window after watching this years team. The key being you need veterans, which we probably will never have again under Calipari. I am still wondering what will happen to Harrow next year with the Twins coming. Is he really going to take a seat on the bench and be fine with it?
January 14th, 2013 at 3:25 pm
Not only do you need veterans to go undefeated, you need quality depth..If Stein and Harrow stay we might have a chance..Noel is not staying so let go of that. If we get Randle and Wiggins, and Harrow and Stein stay, look out..
That boy named Maggard says we will lose Harrow,Stein,Noel,Goodwin,Poythress and Wiltjer..If that is the case then we have room for Wiggins,Randle and Gordon..Will be anxious to see how this plays out.

13. Have you seen the projections lately….. Anyone that takes Poythress, unless he dramatically improves by then, will get fired.
January 14th, 2013 at 4:07 pm
I want Wille back. His up side is through the roof. He will be better than Noel in two years. I just hope one of those years are with the CATS.
