Look alive, Kyle. We have afternoon notes and today’s podcast (ft. Eli Capilouto and Mitch Barnhart)

Vanderbilt ball???

It’s one of the many great screen grabs from last night’s game.

Notes?

“Good road win.  It’s our first road win.”  That’s how John Calipari opened his pre-Texas A&M press conference Friday afternoon.  From there, he was critical of his team’s rebounding against Vanderbilt, specifically on the offensive end.  He said they gave no effort to go and get balls off their missed shots.  ”We gotta change,” he added.  ”You’re not going to win in this league if you’re giving up 20 offensive rebounds and then not attempting to offensive rebound.”

—  Cal said he knew Kevin Stallings would throw the zone on them so he spent all week working on it.  ”And that’s what it looked like,” he said of their performance against the zone in the game.  ”I don’t know what we worked on but it wasn’t the right thing.”

—  Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game against Texas A&M, Cal said the Aggies are very physical, big and strong.  He called them a post-up team and he expects them to go after Kentucky’s big men.  He also spoke highly of Elston Turner, saying he’s as good as you’ll find in the SEC.  Turner is averaging just over 15 points per game this season.

—  So how much of the focus in today’s practice was on Texas A&M?  “We’re not worried about A&M, I’m worried about my team.”

—  Calipari didn’t let up on the criticism of Kyle Wiltjer’s defense after bashing him in last night’s postgame press conference.  He said if Kentucky were to go soon with Wiltjer in the game, he’d have to play the middle because teams would take advantage of him on the wing.  ”Now, what do you think they’ll do if we put him in the middle of the zone?  It’s hard.”

—  In football news, it’s a huge weekend on the recruiting front as there are a ton of visitors in town.  It looks like two of the stars from the group, Asiantii Woolard and Ra’shaad Samples, are enjoying themselves already:

Come on down?

—  Matt and I were joined by Eli Capilouto and Mitch Barnhart on this morning’s radio show.  President Capilouto stopped by the studio in the first hour to discuss yesterday’s big announcement, and then Barnhart called in during Hour 2 to give his thoughts on what it means for the future of UK athletics.  Have a listen at TalkRadio1080.com.

  1. Big Blue Championships Says:

I was late to the party on the Creighton SID voicing his two cents on the Wildcats…but here is my two cents on him: The SID from Creighton, the Anderson fella, comes across as half a creep (and/or stalker), to me. The guy follows 288 people on Twitter. A quick scan of the list breaks down like this:
200 media types. Assorted columnists, broadcasters, accouncers, radio show hosts, etc. I’m sure all of which make sense for his role at Creighton or his general sports interests. Then he has about 25 people who are somewhat affiliated with Creighton that are coaching and playing somewhere else. The other 50 all seem to be female athletes at Creighton. (See: entire women’s volleyball team, womens’ basketball team, etc etc) Now I can understand if he wears the “social media police” hat as a part of his job. So are you telling me that none of the male athletes have twitter accounts, or does he just like to check out the college girls’ Instagram photos from parties and long bus trips? Whether the guy is 25, 35, or 65 years old, it seems somewhat perverted and unprofessional. (C’mon dude, if you are going to take the time and interest to internet stalk the female athletes that you see everyday in the building, at least have the common courtesy to create an alternate twitter handle so you can do it with a relative amount of privacy.)

  2. Big Blue Championships Says:

If anyone calls, please tell them I’m unavailable for awhile. I have the yFrog and Instagram photos from 40 different female athletes from some obscure private school in the Midwest that I need to sort through. Be back for tip-off tomorrow though. GO CATS

  3. Hal Says:

  4. Douggercats Says:

Kyle made that face in response to Cal losing his mind that 3 guys hit the deck to grab a lose ball and the guy closest to it (Kyle) did not.

  5. Hal Says:

    new espn ranks
–asiantii woulard #143 overall and #1 DT QB & 10th overall QB
    –shelton gibson #201 overall & #28 WR
    –ryan timmons #248 overall & #28 ATH

  6. true story Says:

  7. Holme Says:

What kinda crowd did Samples draw at Bluegrass field?

  8. stoopspoopsicecream Says:

This weekend’s warm temperatures can only help things. Thanks Cal! That guy gets it!

  9. Bobbum man Says:

    Cool dude??

  10. SexnNursinHomes Says:

Woulard to Samples. TD (Air raid horns blow). Got a nice ring to it.

  11. GRob Says:

Hey Asiantii! You and Samples can torch SEC defenses together for the next 4 years at Kentucky!! You can do special things here!!

  12. tyson Says:

#4, i’m glad someone else has noticed that. i don’t think Kyle has dived on the floor once this year when loose balls were RIGHT by him.

  13. BigBlue Says:

Man I hope we land Woulard and Samples. That would be huge!!

  14. 3 fan Says:

Cal is basically explaining to everyone why he can’t EVER play Wiltjer!

  15. W.W.B.B.N.D? Says:

If Kyle has any hopes of playing pro ball he better start doing Jorts UK workout. He will get no minutes next year at UK if he does not get some fire in him. You are 6’9″, grab some rebounds!

  16. Wildcatsteeler Says:

People seem to be forgetting the HUGE shot Kyle hit at the end of the game.

  17. rnet Says:

Does anyone else ever feel like Kyle Wiltjer is mildly retarded. In all seriousness he would have probably been an all American at UK in the 50′s but in Cal’s system he is an absolute scrub. The only player who has disappointed me more since I have been a hard core UK fan is Roderick Rhodes last year in school. For real, Mark it down, Wiltjer won’t be in a UK uniform nxt year. He’ll transfer back home to Oregon.
