Boogie Beat: Cousins Has Career Night

by @ 1:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

We need to get Cousins to karaoke at Chinoe Pub, stat.

It was a big night for DeMarcus Cousins, who last night scored a season-high 31 points and tied a career-high 20 rebounds as he led the Sacramento Kings to a victory over the Toronto Raptors. Cousins rode a strong first quarter en route to his career night, earning nine points, four rebounds, and three assists during the first twelve minutes. The big man was 11-18 from the field (9-12 from the free throw line) and also had four assists in 31 minutes of play.

Aside from the impressive numbers, Cousins also earned raves from Kings coach Keith Smart, who called him “the guy who can make it all work for us.” Smart praised Cousins’ team-first mentality and predicted that Cousins would continue to improve:

He had the right energy to start the game, he had the right mindset of not trying to score 50 but trying to let his teammates play. He’s in a good spot as a basketball player right now and he’s only going to get better.

Smart also believes that a 20-rebound game can become normal for DeMarcus, saying that his tenacity in going after the ball could make a 20-rebound game happen as often as every five games.

After an unfortunate few weeks of hearing about Cousins’ struggle to get along with the Kings’ staff and management, it’s refreshing to hear that Boogie seems to have turned it around. A part of it could be that Big Cuz has had an epiphany regarding the keys to success in the NBA. One condition of Boogie’s reinstatement to the Kings was that he learn to be a better teammate. After Smart noted Cousins’ selfless play, Cousins also spoke of his team-first mentality and its importance to the Kings’ success, saying “We’re playing some good team basketball. It doesn’t matter who’s having a good night, let’s feed them the rock. That’s been our mindset and it’s been working.”

Let’s finish off with some highlights to put everyone in a good mood.
