Welcome to the beginning of Saturday, January 5, a day without a Kentucky basketball game. It’s a day that will live in infamy. A day in which thousands of Kentuckians will gripe, grouse, and grumble about having no game to watch or attend, no pre and post game radio shows hosted by Matt that they can call in to or comment on the show thread for, no highlights to rehash over a beer at Drake’s, no sweet dreams of three goggles to lull them to sleep at night. After profusely complaining about having nothing to do all day, inevitably the nag in each Kentucky fan’s life will reveal a list of productive things that could conceivably be achieved, causing the bereaved Kentucky fans to sigh and shake their heads. Nothing can be accomplished on a day when Kentucky doesn’t play! Nothing!
… Except watching all the other sports on television, and maybe taking a nap (hence, the “blinks” title of this post. See what I did there?). Oh, and reading KSR, of course. Don’t worry, guys. We’ll get through this one together.
-Coach Cal is all about the numbers lately. At the halfway point of the season, CoachCal.com has released statistics and trends for the season so far. Team shooting, rebounding, steals, plus individual patterns… the information is all here, waiting for your inner Jonathan Schuette to analyze it.
-Presenting, the latest SEC Conference Power Rankings, courtesy of Myron Medcalf and ESPN. Kentucky checks in at second, behind Florida. Medcalf is optimistic about the Cats’ outlook in conference play.
-Prepare for DeMarcus Cousins highlights later on today, but just to whet your appetite, know that last night Boogie scored 31 points and a career high 20 rebounds in the Kings’ win against the Raptors. His coach called him “the guy who makes it all work for us.” That’s the Boogie we know and love.
-Late last night, we learned the 2015 power forward Elijah Thomas of Prime Prep in Texas has received some interest from Kentucky. Next Cats has the details.
-A new proposal being examined by the NCAA Leadership Council would allow players with a GPA of 2.6 or higher to transfer and play immediately without having to sit out a year. Read to find out how this rule would affect both majors and mid-major schools (Kentucky is a major school, bee tee dubs).
-And what links post would be complete without a few early NBA mock drafts? Most, actually, but it’s a bye week, so work with me here. NBADraft.net has Nerlens Noel and Willie Cauley-Stein in the top ten, while Sports Illustrated has Noel first, with Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin joining him in the top ten.
I’m here all morning. @KristenGeilKSR
