Kentucky Free Throw Dance Explained

by @ 1:30 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

The folks at UK have explained what happened on the free throw dance in the first half versus Louisville. The foul was called on Russ Smith of Louisville, but the UK bench assumed the referee called the foul on the Poythress drive. They said Alex should be the shooter, assuming the foul had been called on Montrezl Harrell, not Russ Smith. The official came over to the official scorer, called the foul on Smith and said that #22 (Poythress) was the shooter. Of course, that would be impossible if the foul was actually on Smith. Since the referee did seem to blow the whistle and call the foul on Smith, it looks like it is a case of the referee himself getting confused as to who got fouled and the referee incorrectly assigning Poythress the shots instead of Noel.

What a shock, referees screwed up. It wasn’t the only time during yesterday’s game.

Hey, I got called for a foul by a ref once, and I was on the bench. So the ref says he got the wrong “Kevin”, and calls it on the Kevin sitting beside me! So then he says he got the wrong Addington! Calls it on the older brother. Who was sitting beside him! No lie!

  2. Larry Cox Says:

Cal should enlist the help of Kyle Macy. He continues to hold the highest free throw percentage not only at UK, but at Pheonix as well. While coaching MSU, his teams were among division leaders in free throw shooting. He resides in Lexington and would be a huge asset to our coaching staff.

  3. cman Says:

I’m upset with how alex has bein playing. We need the Alex that we seen agaisnt duke. If he plays like he did against duke we are a dangerous team. I believe cal will make him get it together.. love my cats

  5. kentuckyjoe Says:

Two things in general about free throw shooting. They should be shot in the same way that you would take a shot from anywhere else on the floor. If that is a jump shot (and that’s what it is 99% of the time) then that is the shot that should be taken from the free throw line. And secondly, coaches would be wise to call a halt to the high fiving, butt slapping, fist bumping, or whatever it is that they all do after every free throw. Completely unnecessary and it takes the shooter’s mind away from what they should be concentrating on; how to duplicate the shot just made or conversely, how to fix the shot just missed.

  6. Kelly Says:

I was going to say it really doesn’t matter who was fouled or who shot the free throws. The officials put Alex on the line.

  7. Cokely Says:

We should’ve tried it with WCS and put Kyle in there to shoot them

  8. Kelly Says:

Alex will be fine. Remember Harrison Barnes struggled his freshman year. He finally got it together during conference play. Sometimes freshman actually play like freshman. It’s not his fault that he hasn’t lived up to the high expectations we as fans have put on him. Believe it or not these kids do have 4 years of college to get it together. These kids have only been practicing and playing games at UK for around 75 days. How dare some are not playing at a high level yet.

  9. Basketball isnt life, guys Says:

    Hey Matt…You mad, bro?

  10. test Says:

    test

  11. UK staff Says:

I like my Alex. He’ll be fine. Cal’s got this. Just relax and enjoy the rest of the season as we defend our national title.

  12. Foul That Sealed The Game Says:

When UK had narrowed the lead to 3 within the final minute and the ref called the foul on Mays.

Watch the play again. Mays didn’t foul the guy (nor was he trying to).

I think the ref thought Mays was trying to foul so he quickly blew the whistle.

This put Russ Smith (one of UL’s best free throw shooters) on the line to ice the game.

    Watch that ref.

    When will Hood be back?

  14. Bro Says:

    9) Hey bro…what’s up bro…bro, bro, bro….Hey bro…you mad, bro? Bro, you don’t even know, bro.

  15. Ky Bball forum Says:

I remember when Kentucky actually DID send the wrong guy to the line twice and got away with it. Once it was Travis Ford and I forget the other one. Both happened in the same game. Pitino made them sit out a while in the following game because of it. Anybody else remember that?

  16. FurdTurgason Says:

When WCS gets fouled, can we just request the ball out of bounds? He shoots it way too flat.

  17. NotBro Says:

    Don’t call me Bro, Pal.

  18. bluristhurr Says:

    Don’t call me pal, homie.

  19. yo Says:

#5 – You’re suggesting the players start taking jump shots at the free throw line?

  20. Swoony Says:

Why is there porno music playing the background?

  21. RealCatsFan Says:

The thing that stands out to me about most of our players shooting free throws is that they hardly bend their knees at all – most of the time they are just standing straight up and down and using their arms and wrists. Is this just the way they are being taught these days? I had always seen proper free throw form to include using the legs to shoot the ball. I guess Cal has had to spend so much time just getting these kids to play together that there has not been much time spent on practicing free throws.

  22. UKBlue Says:

This year team, just like last year team, and the teams before that have all been bad or inconsistent free throw shooters. Fundamental free throws are not considered to be a big deal to practice in high school, AAU, college, or apparently the NBA. This is total insanity to me considering how many games are won or lost by something as simple as hitting free throws.

All 3 refs need to be suspended for their performance.

  23. big cat Says:

lets see, have nerlens shoot left handed hooks, and have harrow and goodwin start at the top of the circle and run to the free throw line and flip it up from fifteen for their free throws??? sorry, but thats ridiculos! please leave the coaching to the staff. but, kyle macy certainly knows how to shoot free throws, we could use his help, now thats a good idea!

  24. Kevin C. Is a Douche Says:

    21) you have got to be the biggest idiot to get on here. You don’t think Matt realized the YouTube name of this video? If anything, he’s being objective by even posting this. Looks like you are the bottom feeder of trolls. Yes, there are other trolls with more clever comments than you. Go back to your grandmas basement and play your dungeons and dragons

  25. Bigcat4453 Says:

#15, I remember that all too well. The other player involved was Martinez. They had to sit the very next game which was in Knoxville, my one and only time to visit Thompson Bowling.

  26. Ky Bball Forum Says:

Thanks 26. It was Martinez. I remember that now.

  27. mudcreekmark Says:

5)Sorry, but you don’t shoot jump shots from the free throw line.I do agree with the hand slapping after the free throws though. I don’t know where this tradition started but it needs to stop, now! They have to slap everyones hands even after a miss? I don’t understand that. If God forbid somehow someone can’t slap their hand, they pretend to slap their hand anyway. How ridiculous is that? This does seem like a distraction to me,not to mention all the sweat they get from everyones hands.

  28. Vince Voyeur Says:

    20. lol that was exactly what I was thinking. Porno music really doesn’t go well with a college basketball game. Unless, of course, there’s people having sex on the court.

  29. Funky Monkey Says:

Matt, you might need to ease up and take a break on this story. Yahoo has picked it up and running it nationally saying UK cheated on a shooter switcheroo, that UK tried to be slick and the karma from the cheat fit the loss. Maybe there is more to focus on with that game than the refs.

  30. LanceMannion Says:

Rick Bozich is treating this like a major scandal. I called him out for being a dbag on Facebook and got defriended. Now, I won’t be able to sleep tonight.

  31. Red Bird Says:

My coach used to do this in JV games, hahaha.

  32. Just me Says:

3 and 21, please don’t use SEEN instead of saw in your sentences, it makes you look so bad and gives the others more ammo about KY fans being stupid. It drives me crazy that people don’t know how to use “saw” and “did” instead of seen and done. It’s no wonder people make fun of us.

  33. Blue Troll Says:

    CHEATERS!

  34. cat Daddy Says:

Fire Cal and hire the coach at Butler.

  35. jon Hood Says:

If I had not been sick we would have won by 30

  36. CheatToWin Says:

Cal is a Cheatin’ Bastard…NO surprises here.

  37. Form Says:

If they would just use form like this their free throw shooting would be fine. http://ksr.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/harrellson-726417.jpg
