Are we making “too big of a deal” out of the game again?

by @ 11:15 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

After Kentucky’s win over Louisville last season*,  Coach Cal said on his postgame radio show that fans make too big deal out of the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry.  “You people and the Louisville fans make too big a deal out of this game,” he said.  ”There weren’t 57 Kentucky players out on the floor. We both have kids from all over and it’s not as big a deal for them. They’re not even in our league.”

As Kentucky basketball fans, we would never disagree with any of the gospel Calipari spews — except this.  Calipari is wrong.  The Kentucky-Louisville game is a big deal.  It’s one of the best rivalries in college basketball.

He did, however, call it a big deal when we win.  We’ll take that.  And beating Louisville has happened a lot lately.

* The first one, not the second one.

we will lose…but it will be close. (Camp Cal…show’s it’s working)….this team is young folks…we will be ok….just relax. (YOU DO NOT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS in DECEMBER, just ask Indiana)….

  2. UKUKUK1865 Says:

Not that big of a deal for me. I hope we win but I would much rather lose this one and win a conference game.

  3. tdogg40330 Says:

    1) nahh, UK will win. This game will grab the attention of the college basketball
world, lets not forget about the CATS just yet.

  4. Calipari - Not Everything For Everybody Says:

Calipari is talking with one voice to everybody. He’s not going to tell everyone what they want to hear (lip service).

His intent is to settle the team down for the game.

Everyone knows it’s big. But Cal is just telling his players what they need to hear. And he’s doing it through the media so they can’t help but trust him. That’s his message, loud and clear, and not he told these people this and then these other people that.

UK fans don’t need to hear Cal tell them this game is big, and if he tells us it’s not, then smile and know what he’s up to.

Now if he ever said that it was a small game or meaningless, then we’ve got something to talk about.

  5. MemphisCat Says:

It is a bigger deal for the fans then the teams, you have to hold serve in your state. Just like Alabama .vs. Auburn, if you only win one game you had better beat Auburn, that is what got Bill Curry fired at Alabama. I don’t want to hear UL people talk about beating us all year, they will sound like the IU fans, that is all they hung their hats and popcorn on in 2011/2012.

  6. Superbowl Says:

I’m sure this game is huge for flatbills and the linebeards. We are a traditional power and they are searching for historical relevance. If they lose this game then they are exposed but everyone already knows what our weaknesses currently are.

  7. nassau65 Says:

Well, Cal is right when he says they are not even in our league. That’s true in more ways than one.

  8. Bill Says:

This game is all on lville. They are ranked, high at that, and for their seniors they have never beat UK and if they don’t this time, they will be 0-5. On the pressure is on them.

  9. mudcreekmark Says:

It may not be a big deal to some of the players, I’m not so sure about that either, but it is a huge game for the fans. UK fans hate UofL and UofL fans hate UK plain and simple. There is too much hate for it not to mean anything.

  10. UK Homer Says:

It’s a big deal when you don’t have bigger ambitions. Kind of why Xavier/Cincinnati is such a “big deal.” Unless, of course, you win while pursuing something greater like our Final Four W last season. IMO that W was worth exponentially more than any regular December/January UK/UL game. I’m not sure how many times UL will have to beat us in the regular season to make up for that – especially since we won #8

  11. BNolan Says:

Of course it is important. This is the game of the season every year. It means a lot to both the fans and the players. Cal is just playin’ possum. He knows better!

  12. tiny tim Says:

chill. it’s just calspeak. tard fans are hangin’ their flatbills on the mizzou & memphis wins, but we got this.

  13. gcat4496@yahoo.com Says:

Pressure is now on Pitino. He has to win, Cal has house money and some equity. 4-0 in 3 years plus the big final 4 win last year. UL has talent/experience & home court advantage. I expect Dieng to be playing as well. That might be for the best, because if the Cats win, it will be because Dieng was out. If the Cats lose the Loserville crowd will be boasting that they beat us without their top player. Pressure is on you Ricky P.

  14. gcat4496@yahoo.com Says:

This game is not important folk. Would you rather cut the nets down in April or win a meaningless game in December.

  15. Big Blue Coming at You Says:

It’s not the same rivalry as it used to be since there’s hardly any players from the state playing on either team anymore but it’s still a big deal to fans. Most importantly though, we need this win over a ranked opponent for tournament seeding. The SEC is pathetic this year which should be good for the win column but won’t be for tournament seeding. We need to show that we’ve made progress and deserve a high seed.

  16. ben Says:

When you live in Louisville and work with UL Fans, it can be a much bigger deal then those who live out in the State! The world will not end, but I much prefer to be on the winning side. UL Fans are total assholes when they win for the next year. Only knocking UL out of the tourney can help! Last year beating them twice was heaven.

Cal is a great person, but he does not live in the real world! He can fly and go anywhere he wants and do whatever he wants. It is almost impossible for him to relate to the common fan. Much like politicians, he is insulated from everyday problems and loses touch with reality as we know it.

  17. TrueBlue Says:

Have to go with Cal on this one.

  18. blue Says:

we won it all last year and have a good shot next year….i would rather take a win this weekend over the cards and be knocked out of the tourny!! NO ONE believes we will win and ill admit i dont either but i can dream cant i?

  19. Lexloublue2 Says:

We will lose this game. No need to jump off the bridge over it, but we cannot beat UL at this time in the season, and I am not sweating it. This team is not very exciting, not really very good but they can and do show up to play once in a while. This is going to be a down year for UK, but next year will be awesome. I will relax, kick back and enjoy the game…but we will not beat them, not this year. Just being a realist!

  20. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door Says:

I can’t believe Drew didn’t end the post with “…a whole lot”.

  21. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door Says:

BTW, I remember that John Wall and company admitted they didn’t realize the magnitude of this game until the pregame when UL players started talking trash (and I think there was even some shoving in the pregame if I remember right), and also when the one player kneed Boogie in the head to try to get him thrown out. That’s gonna be the norm with all these 1 and dones.

  22. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

Cal means its not that important as far as how the rest of the season turns out. Were not even halfway into the season. Its a big deal as faras being a rivalry but not for the season being determined by one game.

  23. JIMMY BUTAFUCO Says:

…..and the Indiana game isn’t a big deal to fans….nor is the SEC tournament in which 15-20 thousand Kentucky fans show up to see every year. On a side note… maybe the SEC tournament will be a big deal this year if we are playing for seeding which I got a feeling we will be. GO CATS!

  24. Truth Says:

These guys don’t care. Do you really think our best players would even be here if not for the rules

  25. Jacob Says:

he knows the players are hearing it somewhere from the fans so he’s doing his best to downgrade the game because he also knows he has one of the youngest teams

  26. Jacob Says:

probably the toughest environment if the year can’t wait!

  27. brand Says:

Opioids are chemical compounds which act upon a single or a lot more of the human opiate receptors. Buy cheap Tramadol
