No other team in college basketball is affected by the NBA draft like Kentucky is. Our year-to-year roster is based almost entirely on how the draft goes. Granted, it’s way too early to take a mock draft seriously, but we have to at least keep an eye on how analysts are viewing Kentucky’s players as the season progresses. Just to take a look ahead, CBS Sports recently updated it’s 2013 Mock Draft, and there were a couple of surprises in it.
********************************
1. Cody Zeller, Indiana
2. Nerlens Noel, Kentucky
3. Alex Poythress, Kentucky
4. Ben McLemore, Kansas
5. Alex Len, Maryland
6. Rudy Gobert, France
7. Anthony Bennett, UNLV
8. Shabazz Muhammad
9. Michael Carter-Williams, Syracuse
10. Archie Goodwin, Kentucky
22. Willie Cauley-Stein, Kentucky
**************************
By the end of the year could Noel and Poythress hop Zeller and become the second consecutive one-two punch in draft? Obviously, they would need a monster rest of the season but anything’s possible. Great possibilities ahead.

I hope someone tells Andrew Wiggins about that list, specifically the positioning of Shabazz Muhammad.
December 15th, 2012 at 11:39 am
Can you say underachieving? Can you say “The Kentucky Effect”.
December 15th, 2012 at 11:44 am
I find it simply amazing that UL has only ONE player in the top 60 – siva, blackshear, and behannon – all VERY highly-touted HS players – none even mentioned in a mock draft. How many talented players does RP have to hold back and dminish in the eyes of the NBA before recruits learn better than to play for him at UL?
December 15th, 2012 at 11:56 am
#3 good question.
December 15th, 2012 at 11:57 am
Shabazz is dropping like a rock. Shoulda gone to Kentucky, kid.
December 15th, 2012 at 12:10 pm
I love UK basketball thoroughly but if these guys were drafted today only one have a shot at any playing time in the NBA. It would be Goodwin. I love Noel but could he score in the NBA or could he really defend? He would need 30 pounds more muscle and develop some kind of offensive game. He definitely has the potential but he gets pushed around way too much! Cauley Stein and Poythress are D-League players at best right now! Neither of these three guys are in Terrence Jones league and he is in D-League! They all the POTENTIAL but in reality not ready yet!
December 15th, 2012 at 12:10 pm
The guys who make these lists are a joke. Which GM is taking Poythress over Shabazz? I love Poy but that is just looking at stats throught 10 games.
December 15th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
7. Im guessing you havent seen Shabazz play.
December 15th, 2012 at 12:23 pm
I just don’t see it its getting crazy just cause they go to Kentucky they get drafted. Dukes big guy out played our big guys maryland’s big guy out played them. Dukes seth curry out played our guards.
December 15th, 2012 at 12:23 pm
This is the weakest draft in 30 years
Terrence Jones should have waited.
He’d clearly go above Poythress at this point.
Lamb would have seen a bump as well.
December 15th, 2012 at 12:34 pm
#10 in the meantime, those guys r making 7 figure salaries. Why wait another year?
December 15th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
11. +1
December 15th, 2012 at 1:04 pm
#11-lamb is making six figures, not seven. after cars, houses and ice…no money left. hello europe.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:05 pm
#11-teague is also making six figures. misconception that these guys are instant millionaires. $650,000/year is not much when you factor in bling and bad investments.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:07 pm
i completely agree with #6 and 9. the nba talk is ridiculous. it seems that there is a bias towards kentucky players in the draft. how can a guy like deshaun thomas from ohio state not be in the first round? he’s 6’7” 220 with a smooth left handed jumpshot. that’s just one example. don’t get it.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:09 pm
dgmw…i love our team and kentucky basketball more than anything except my maker, redeemer and family…but the mock draft boards are a joke and they are hurting our program. teague and lamb should be on this team. they would have benefited on the court and in the bank account.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
what happens if all four of our freshmen leave after this year? we’ll be in the same boat next year. no upperclassmen and/or “glue” guys, like liggins, harrelson, miller, patterson, etc. and don’t tell me that the harrison twins are going to roll over the college game next year. they’re super talented, intelligent, great kids…but they’re going to need some help.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:29 pm
where is polson on the list?
December 15th, 2012 at 1:29 pm
wiggins could be the difference.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:32 pm
Hey look who’s #1
December 15th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
#6 – I disagree on the 30 more pounds of muscle part. They said the same thing about Davis and he seems to be doing fine without it. However, NBA teams do make draft selections based on potential unfortunately. I’m sure they saw how Poythress played against Duke, which was a freakin monster, and thought they could get him to play like that every game in the NBA. Plus, our cats are getting better every game and we’re only 10 games into the season. Just imagine how good they could be by the end of the year. I agree the draft does hurt our program some what, in that some players who aren’t ready to leave, end up leaving too early when they should stay another year or two. They see all the money they could be getting and all of their friends leaving as well and decide they should enter the draft also. But Cal’s ability to get players to the draft is pretty much the main reason we get as many top recruits every year that we do. It’s really a give and take situation. We like the draft because we get top players to play for us every year, but it kind of sucks because they all leave at the end of the year, even the ones that shouldn’t. I’m not complaining with Cal’s results though.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:35 pm
Well I’m glad your proud of the draft factory up there. In case you haven’t noticed they can’t even keep you in the top 25
December 15th, 2012 at 1:42 pm
i’m with you #21. the difference now is that the guys that cal inherited are all gone. we’re in year 4 under cal. the results have been beyond belief. but, it’s different now. if we keep losing players after one year, we’ll keep spinning our wheels back to the drawing board every year with 5-star freshmen.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
i don’t have the answer…somehow, cal has to get 2-3 top 5-star mcdonald’s all-americans and mix in some 4 stars that are going to stay 3-4 years. hard to do…
December 15th, 2012 at 1:44 pm
if anyone can do it, it’s cal. he’ll figure it out.
December 15th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Shabazz didn’t go to college
December 15th, 2012 at 2:08 pm
#22 – Well incase you haven’t noticed, we just won a national championship in our coach’s third year here. We’re pretty happy. Our cats are going through some struggles right now. We think they’ll be fine come March. Just like every year.
December 15th, 2012 at 2:09 pm
So I guess wiltjer and polson don’t count as vets. U could count hood, as well as Stacey Poole it’s not cals fault he transferred. We just won a championship get real people
December 15th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
Also Cauley stein was a 4 star
December 15th, 2012 at 2:15 pm
That’sall great, hope it follows through in March. 4 top 25 picks should be a lock for final four
December 15th, 2012 at 2:22 pm
#11 – $$$ – Teague isn’t making 7 figures & Terrence Jones is playing in the D league.
December 15th, 2012 at 2:27 pm
“bad idea” t-shirts is now my favorite business ever
December 15th, 2012 at 2:29 pm
#32 you should nake some Indiana national champs shirts instead
December 15th, 2012 at 2:41 pm
If you could make high 6 figures after one year of college, would you do it? YES
December 15th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
if Zeller is 1 and Poythress is 3 that just sums up how weak this draft is. honestly, anthony bennett would probably be my no.1 pick if i was a GM at this point.
December 15th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
Can’t believe any of these people that are doing these draft projections have seen #22 play. Geez,,,,,,,, he has miles to go.
December 15th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Not post #22. Player that wears the number.
December 15th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
28..wiltjer possibly, but you have a very loose definition of veteran. Hood and polson wore the jersey but were not in any meaningful games situations that they can call upon. Do you really think wcs or nerlens are going to them for advice? The three are mostly observers in the huddle.
December 15th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
6 I agree with you. Cauley Stein and Noel have not shown that they have any kind of jump shot and I do not see how they will be able to dunk all the time in the NBA. Noel is quick but he needs 25 pounds at least.
But the money is what it is all about these days.
December 15th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
27 I’ve noticed that UK won last year with THREE PLAYERS COMING BACK FROM THE YEAR BEFORE. All freshmen cannot win a championship. IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just look what is happening this year. Some veteran teams in the SEC will beat them. Louisville will kill them with their fullcourt press. I am a UK fan but I am also a realist as well.
And by the way Noel will not block eight shots a game in the NBA. GET REAL!!!!!!!!!!!
December 15th, 2012 at 5:48 pm
Must be a weak draft if Poythress is rated #3. I cannot remember a lazier player at Kentucky. Ever. He’s a good student, so hopefully he gets a degree. Because he will never make it in the NBA.
December 15th, 2012 at 7:05 pm
Next year should be different and more like the last 3. We will have Wiltjer as a junior, Harrow as a junior, Polson and Hood as seniors.I also think Cauley-Stein will be back. That should make up a good mix of talented freshmen with some talented upperclassmen.
December 15th, 2012 at 7:12 pm
Early draft boards never get old….except when everytime you read it the names hardly move. WTF is up with Poythress at #3? Really high for me. But if he keeps that shot he had a week ago I can see it being deserving.
December 15th, 2012 at 11:07 pm
Lamb and Teague cost themselves money by going this year. They both would have gone much higher this year and had better overall contracts and hopefully would be getting more playing time. Just because a player can get drafted does mean he needs to go. Cal needs to realize this (not sure why he doesn’t know it) and advise the guys better. Even cousins should have came back. Sometimes a teenager isn’t ready for adult life and there is absolutely no shame in that.
