It’s been over ten years since the Air Raid sirens sang in Commonwealth Stadium. But, with Neal Brown coming home to lead Kentucky’s offense, it’s time to dust them off once again. Since it’s been a while, you may need to refresh yourself on Hal Mumme’s old system. Wikipedia? Pfft, that’s child’s ish. Chris Brown of SmartFootball.com has written what may be the most thorough explanation of the Air Raid Offense in existence.
Brown charts the history and evolution of the Air Raid, going back to its origins at BYU, its maturation under Hal Mumme and Mike Leach, and the new generation of Air Raid coaches, including Neal Brown. If you’re a die-hard X’s and O’s person, you’ll love it, and even if you’re not, it’s a good glimpse at what we may see on the field next season.

Should have hired leach or petrino

Comparing the last season with TT 38 ppg… IF, Kentucky had only scored 22 ppg (60% of TT) and if Stoops had only shaved 25% off the opposing team’s scores….
UK would have been 5-7 last season. Had we scored at 75% of Brown’s rate, still just shaving 25% off the opponent’s score with a Stoops Defense we’d have been 8-5.
Please Eeyores give it a rest, even if Brown doesn’t perform as well in the SEC as he did at Tech, he makes us far more dangerous. And even if Stoops’ WAS playing in the ACC, if he can improve our defense by 25% the total turn-around could be significant.
Not win the SEC significant, not even win the SEC East significant, but still pretty d@rn good, especially as compared to the recent past. And thats’ competing with what we currently have, with a good set of seasons and good evaluation/recruiting Ky. COULD be competing for SCE East.

Should have hired leach or petrino
Leach wasn’t leaving Wa. State for UK; and Petrino got the job he was qualified for…a non-BCS school, at a fraction of his former salary, UNTIL he shows he has changed his spots.

what is it with this blogs obsession with UK football? Is the university paying you guys to talk about it as much as possible? UK is a basketball school and that will never change…And the overwhelming majority of UK fans want basketball info 24/7 this time of year. Not football!!

I’m ok with the Air Raid offense returning so long as they bring a defense with it this time.
December 11th, 2012 at 12:45 pm
4 – good points. Leach, to my knowledge, like Petrino was not contacted by UK because of his temperment. He may not last long at Wassu. I like our odds of success with the coaching staff we’ve hired plus those we will hire. The Air Raid along with a decent defense (something we didn’t have under Mumme) gives us a fighting chance.

7) I got your basketball updates wldctky
Today: the team isn’t that great and cal has to whip their tails to get them to perform
Tomorrow: the team isn’t that great and cal has to whip their tails to get them to perform
The day after that: the team isn’t that great and cal has to whip their tails to get them to perform
The day after that: the team isn’t that great and cal has to whip their tails to get them to perform
Just admit that basketball is boring right now because this team is boring right now. Bring on some football posts

Amazing that the offense redefining much of college ball (along with Chip Kelly’s stuff at Oregon) came to be with Mumme at UK. The branches all head out from there. Leach, Holgerson, Brown, Kingsbury, etc.

Word on the street through Rivals is that dual-threat QB D.J Gillins is wavering on his current verbal to Texas Tech and is eyeing Kentucky. He’s a 4-star. Here’s his yahoo sports profile:

#11 I seen a coaching tree from the air raid offence. You are 100% correct it would surprise a lot of people to see just how far Mummie coaching tree is.
December 11th, 2012 at 1:48 pm
History repeats itself….a coach named Stoops leaves a DC job in the state of Florida to become a head coach, and he hires an air raid coach as his OC. Oklahoma won a championship, so I hope we fare as well!

16. Let’s don’t go all crazy, this is Ky. Football we are talking about here. Let’s get to consistently winning seasons.
December 11th, 2012 at 1:50 pm
To bad Franklin is a rat or he could have coached at a good school somewhere. I know he was at Auburn one year but they sucked. Nothing he could do with that group.
December 11th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
if stoops WERE to ever win at ky he would be out of here a lot quicker than petrino! petrino will bash both uk and ul. would you rather have a top 10 team at uk for a couple yrs and the coach leave or a 3-4 win team for 5 yrs before the coach is fired?
December 11th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
19. Your reasoning was opaque…please explain that again. How does it work, again? Our options are a Top 10 team for a couple of years or Joker? I don’t think those are all of our options, but thank you for contributing.

I heard we had a great offensive recruiting class coming in.. so I checked:
http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/commitments/2013/kentucky-69
I honest thought we would have at least one 4 star recruit based on all the hype. Its great to have solid role players, but hopefully the new coaches can bring in a few bigger names.
December 11th, 2012 at 2:16 pm
#19) that is one of the most moronic post I’ve seen. Why do people say if Stoops does good he will leave? News Flash any coach UK hires is going to use it as a stepping stone. The head coaching job at UK isn’t exactly a destination job. We need to use that to our advantage its a win win for everybody if Stoops has success and moves on we should be in better shape to hire a good coach. Cincinnati has used this to their advantage and has made some great coaching hires. Do you think Petrino will stay at WKU or UK. He’s using this to rebuild his rep so he can get a better job at a bigger school. That’s life everybody is looking to improve his self.
December 11th, 2012 at 2:18 pm
19. I wanted Petrino too, in fact that was the only coach I thought could do anything with UK, but Stoops seems to have a firm grasp of what it will take and we need to give him a chance. If he wins and leaves so be it but let’s give him that chance. The hire has been made, Petrino has been hired elsewhere as well, it’s time to drop it and move on.

21) I’ve been saying the Samething. All I hear about on here is all the talent we have. Or how great we are going to be next year now that Joker is gone because we had a great team joker just couldn’t coach them. All I see is role players and that’s fine if you have some studs to put on the field with them. Uk doesn’t have one player how will make that big stop or that one guy you can throw the ball to who will make a play.
Look at the other schools who offered to our recruits. MAC schools . That’s better judge then gauge then the stars
December 11th, 2012 at 2:27 pm
Man those were the good ole days…… used to fight over tickets to go to the game. Plus you could leave at half time with your pass out ticket and come back in!
December 11th, 2012 at 2:59 pm
I am a Mike Leach apologist. Those who think he is trouble are incorrect. Please read the article referenced and then comment. Michael Lewis (author of Moneyball, The Blind Side, etc.) takes a pretty unbiased view.
