Neal Brown, currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas Tech, is expected to be in Lexington today to meet with Mark Stoops and discuss his potential future as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator. Brown, a graduate of Boyle County High School who excelled in three sports, had Texas Tech’s offense averaging 501 yards and 37.8 points per game, ranking them among the top fifteen offenses in the nation last season. We should have news about whether Brown has accepted the position (and possibly if he’ll also bring former Wildcats Chad Scott and John Schlarman on as staff) tomorrow. Brown has other tempting options, most notably a possible job as head coach at Southern Mississippi, and this get would be a jewel in Mark Stoops’ already stellar assembled staff at Kentucky so far.
Neal Brown, come on down!

come on home, neal. hope to hear some good news.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:38 am
Ahhhh. …… This explains the announcement of WR coach one would think. Brown must b in town to accept job. Normally let OC participate in hiring offensive position coaches.

Time for Mitch to put his money where his mouth is and secure this guy. If the Charlie Strong situation has taught us anything, it’s that sometimes you have to pay a guy more than he’s worth if it’s whats currently best for your program.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:39 am
We better get him or Stoops has failed first real test. Matt, have you heard anything yet?
December 9th, 2012 at 11:43 am
UK will likely pay Brown twice what he would earn as a HC at southern miss or la tech. Plus, if he feels he can be comfortable and successful at uk, then he can pull a “kirby smart” at uk by waiting for the perfect job offer to come open before leaving.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:48 am
He did SMiss and La Tech interviews for experience. He gonna be at UK next year boys
December 9th, 2012 at 11:49 am
So if Brown was to accept a head coaching position over an offensive coordinator position you would consider it a failure?
Thats a ridiculous statement.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:57 am
He has a face only a mother could love.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:58 am
Agreed Nate. I’ve learned the internet brings out the crazies on these blogs.
December 9th, 2012 at 11:59 am
Just come home Neal. Lead the turn around at UK and you will get a better coaching job than Southern Miss.
December 9th, 2012 at 12:00 pm
8- “Yikes” is the next Brad Pitt. Get over yourself, you tool.
December 9th, 2012 at 12:05 pm
Glad to have you in blue again Neal. Lets set the SEC on fire!!
December 9th, 2012 at 12:08 pm
South Miss HC job would pay about $800K… sorry #5 u dead wrong… but I agree with your “kirby smart” assessment… IF things go good at UK. I really hope tomorrow brings NB to UK.

So if we can get Neal Brown to come and run our offense we will have a Hal Mumme offensive mind to go along with a defensive specialist.I really like that combination and really can see us finally getting over that hump. If Mumme would have been smart enough to hire a legit defensive coordinator, instead of his high school defensive coordinator, he may have left a lasting legacy.Instead Mumme hired a bunch of high school buddies who turned out to be bums. What if Mumme would have had a Stoops like defensive coordinator? Stoops has really got my attention and I feel really good about the future.
December 9th, 2012 at 12:47 pm
#4 – I’m sorry but that is a STUPID statement!
December 9th, 2012 at 1:03 pm
Neal Brown, please come to UofK and Coordinate Stoops Offense. We need you brother!
December 9th, 2012 at 1:21 pm
I can’t believe I wasn’t retained…
December 9th, 2012 at 1:27 pm
This may be wishful thinking on my part or me thinking like a complete idiot, but why would Brown be in Lexington today if he wasn’t going to accept the job? Couldn’t he tell Stoops no thanks over the phone?
December 9th, 2012 at 1:27 pm
The job at Southern Miss is a mess. The last AD pimped out Fedora for UNC and is alleged to have left the Athletics Program in deep red ink. There is also some speculation that the President was forced to resign over her support for the AD (which still has an interim tag). Not a good situation for one’s first gig.

I like his face
December 9th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
Neal Brown runs a variation of the Air Raid. Mumme passes were much shorter. It allowed the defense to compress and actually make it more difficult to move the ball over time. Neal Brown mixes a lot of vertical passing into his attack to keep defenses honest. His ability to stretch the field is very QB dependent. Couch allowed Mumme to mix in some deeper stuff while Dusty Bonner didn’t. Brown would have plenty of arm strength on this team to stretch the field.
December 9th, 2012 at 1:51 pm
Hopefully, they can make it worth his while $-wise. He can get a better HC down the road. BBN is hungry for a winner. We need Neal Brown to be our OC.
December 9th, 2012 at 1:55 pm
I miss the bubble screen…yaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!.I hope we don’t replace the 3rd and 18 bubble screen with 3rd and 18 wide receiver screen.
December 9th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
Duffus says: Hey #23 just go to tex.tech fans site they are glad to lose Brown and all his “bubble screens”. Now maybe the “tub” didn’t let him do his thing, just say’n be careful what you wish for. If he for some reason is not offered or turnsdown the offer, it’s not a failure,”NEVER FEAR STOOPS IS HERE”!! PERIOD
December 9th, 2012 at 2:52 pm
The fans down at Tex-Tech cannot stand this guy. They say he’s a horrible play caller. Are they just a disgruntled fan-base that cannot be satisfied, or do they have a legitimate gripe?
December 9th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
They are probably like some of you people who are never satisfied no matter what so we will be just fine if we get Brown!!!!!
December 9th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
24/25-he had #1 passing offense but a 4-5 big12 record.
TT defense did give up 34 to KU and 40+ points in 5 games. (93rd PPG defense)
tough to blame all of that on brown. we’ll see
December 9th, 2012 at 4:06 pm
Remember that before Neal Brown came to Texas Tech they had a Mike Leach offense … so they were already using an “Air Raid” passing attack. After they fired Leach and hired Tuberville there was a fall off in passing yards and a bit more rushing (3 years under Brown/Tuberville averaged passing 4200 YDS, 37 TDS, 12 INTS and rushing 1671 YDS, 4.2 YPC and passed 59.5% of the time… under Leach his last 3 years it was passing 5500 YDS, 46 TDS, 14 INTS and rushing 904 YDS, 3.1 YPC and passed 70.4% of the time).
December 9th, 2012 at 4:43 pm
if we get Neal Brown, this looks on paper to me as the best hire in the sec…..
December 9th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
WE WANT NEAL BROWN AND THE RETURN OF “AIR RAID”
December 9th, 2012 at 5:07 pm
Question is, will Texas Tech consider replacing Tuberville with Brown? I guess if he’s meeting here that might be unlikely but it could also be decent leverage.
December 9th, 2012 at 5:39 pm
so long as when we are on third down and more than ten yards he doesn’t try to run the ball i will be happy. regardless of what offense he brings, we really can’t do much worse than we have this year now can we? if all the football players missed every practice this year we still may have won as many games. all i can say is that if we do get Brown to add to the all ready impressive staff we should do considerably better.
December 9th, 2012 at 7:38 pm
Texas Tech had the number two ranked passing offense in all of college football. Their total offense was ranked 12th overall. They averaged 361.9 passing yards per game and 501.4 total yards per game. Brown is a proven commodity at the division one level with recruiting ties in Texas, and he’s a homegrown guy that went to school at Kentucky. I can’t believe some people are complaining about this.
