Kentucky Hires UT Wide Receivers Coach Darin Hinshaw

by @ 8:42 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

The Orange Zone is reporting that Kentucky has hired UT quarterback and receivers coach Darin Hinshaw. Hinshaw has coached at Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, and Georgia Southern after playing collegiate football for UCF and enjoying a brief playing stint in the NFL. Hinshaw is known for his recruiting prowess and is responsible for Tennessee landing Cordarrelle Patterson, who has been absolutely tearing up the SEC this season with 1,858 all-purpose yards. In hiring Hinshaw, is seems that Stoops is continuing to make a statement about strengthening Kentucky’s recruiting in the South.

Hinshaw will be coaching the wide receivers at Kentucky. For Hinshaw’s bio, click here. Come on down, Darin!

  1. Durrrr Says:

Sounds good. UT could put the points up this year so hopefully he can bring some of that action up to Lex.

  2. JHC Says:

Stoops must have his OC in place if this is true (Brown I’m assuming).

  3. Kona Says:

Is this guy the new OC?

  4. killer hire Says:

This is a fantastic hire. If theres one thing Tennessee did right it was throwing the rock. We seem to be collecting an energetic young staff.

  5. BigBluSoTru Says:

I guess we will praise Hinshaw, well i remember just having a coach in the same position receivers and recruiting coordinator by the name of Tee martin, who was prasied in the coaching circles as a young dynamic recruitor also. Oh from the Vols also. See how that worked let’s not get so excited people it is what it is.

  6. Finally Says:

Excellent hire on the recruiting front. This guy is an Ace recruiting florida and kansas juco. Now if only Coley would come on to be asst head coach and recruiting coordinator.

  7. Go Wildcats Says:

#3 The fan message boards I don’t visit are suggesting he’s our WR coach, still no word on an OC.

  8. Finally Says:

    5) Tee did some really good stuff during his time here at UK and was arguably our top recruiter. He left UK for a bigger paycheck and to further his resume. I can’t say I blame him either. Not many coaches would turn down USC.

  9. Yesindeedythemrbiguns Says:

It would be nice if you told us what they hired him for just saying r we suppose to guess. Not complaining or anything.

  10. BookieTeeleftMeHanging Says:

Yelp Bookie the legend the greatest to never do anyything but get prasied by ksr and smoke weed.

  11. Andre? Says:

This would have to mean he isn’t going to retain Woodson for QB coach, right?

  12. Dacci Says:

@3: I’m assuming he will have the same position title here as he did ad UT. I’mnot sure Butch Jones was planning on keeping all of Dooley’s Staff.

  13. UC Farmer Says:

This might be a power play to lock up the Alexander twins. Hinshaw was recruiting them hard for Tennessee.

  14. UKani Says:

#11 Woodson wasn’t QB Coach. Woodson was a Graduate Assistant.

  15. Teddy Bridgewater Says:

What is the date of uk’s bowl game?

  16. Han Says:

This really lends credence to the thought that we have our OC (presumably Brown). You typically wouldn’t hire offensive coaches unless you knew for sure the OC and system you’d have.

Presumably he’ll get to recruiting a couple particular guys immediately.

    5) Previous staff ended up sucking, but some of that is dependent on the head man and system, too.

    8) Gonna be out of a job, soon, though. That clown Kiffiykins been cheating and doing little cheap tricks ever since he took over, and now that his father has fallen on his sword, he’s losing one of the strongest parts of his staff and system. USC may look bad next year, especially since he’s still got USC talent.

    11) Woodson wasn’t actually QB coach, was he? I thought he was still an assistant or something.

  17. g-unit Says:

Stoops was also recruiting MacKenzie very hard too. He is an elite CB prospect and a top 30 guy.

  18. Catfan4444 Says:

Well, UT coaches haven’t worked out well the last few yrs. see Tee Martin, Randy Sanders….so we shall see.

  19. Joseph Adams Says:

Per Twitter last night at 11:42pm: @playerjoe141
Darin HInshaw will be a receivers coach per source for Kentucky football team

  20. jason Says:

Please tell me when Tee Martin coached at UT.

  21. KYStout Says:

I’ve heard of four different sources claiming Neal Brown has accepted the OC position at Kentucky with an announcement coming as early as Monday. The Kentucky scout site is one that has a nice “rumor” thread in it.

  22. Van Wilder Says:

First off, even UT fans couldn’t stand Randy Sanders. After reading UT’s boards, they love Hinshaw and the guy has been key in them landing key recruits, including Patterson who will be one and done in college because of his talent. With that said, Sanders was instrumental in making Woodson the QB he ended up being and he made Hartline into a formidable SEC QB as well. Max Smith was well on his way to being a decent QB for us before he went down.

Tee Martin wasn’t too big of a failure, seeing as how he ended up getting a step-up and raise at USC. For schools like USC to want our position coaches means that said position coach did a good job.

Finally, you have to have a competent head coach. When this staff rounds out, there will be zero comparison in regards to which staff is/was better.

  23. JLivermore Says:

Here’s a post from a Red Raider fan on one of their sites.

“…Just make sure we fire Neal Brown. The man can’t coach offense!”

The term “fan” is so appropriate. Fanatics at TTU will be glad to get rid of Neal Brosn while we hail him as a home run hire…and I’m sure like everyone else we’ve hired “one of the best recruiters in the biz”.

  24. red headed step chid Says:

Andre was the QB COACH. I hope he keeps his job, we did see improvement in that area from last season. We need to keep someone from previous staff on both sides of the ball.

  25. Clint Says:

I LOVE when people argue facts without doing ANY research. Andrew Woodson was NOT the quarterback coach.. He was a student assistant.. As 10 other people have said. All you have to do is check this one little site.. It’s called ukathletics.com

    http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/woodson_andre01.html

  26. here ya go Says:

the only person we should keep from the previous staff is the special teams coach.. PUNTER U. ftw.

  27. Wildcat Mafia Says:

    15. Bridgewater….. Who spelled all those big words for you…

  28. ikeeveready Says:

As much as a lot of people hated Randy Sanders, we had some pretty good QB play during his tenure (Newton excluded). Andre is a grad assistant but could certainly help as an asst QB coach. Scouting with Coughlin, Gilbride and Eli, plus the work with Sanders had to have taught him something.

Hinshaw is a receivers coach and recruiter. Solid hire there as long as he doesn’t go after knuckleheads like Da’Rick Rogers.

Anyone thought about Tim Couch as a QB coach? As high profile as he’s been in the process could he be looking to come home? Or is TV his new home?

  29. sam k Says:

Kristen, you probably should make it a little more clear as to what position we actually hired the dude for.

  30. W.W.B.B.N.D? Says:

Stoops is bring a coaching staff together that should be able to bring better football talent to UK then people are accustom to.

  31. Some Guy in Kentucky Says:

UK women basketball game is on Fox south at 1pm est today. It is right after the Coach Cal and Coach Mitchell shows.

  32. dave Says:

    http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?coach=1338&sport=1&year=2013
-better idea (hopefully) on who this guy is recruiting. evidently he goes after FL hard

  33. Tom Says:

How come all of these other openings are having to settle for ‘been there, done that’ successful coaches and we got the only one, so far that is untested and ofcourse, undefeated?
Did Mitch pull off another coup or what!
I bet none of the others came as cheap or demanded less to sign.
You go Mitch, give another 3 million to baseball and slap on some paint in the football locker rooms.

  34. kydenman Says:

joker was named as the recruiting co-ordinator at FLA…..maybe he was a good recruiter as well

  35. 40cap Says:

UT fan checking in, very disappointed that DH was not retained, primarily for recruiting reasons, but also great coach, great person, great family. IMO it was a no-brainer to keep Hinshaw, but I guess the new HC has to be comfortable w/ his staff. I fear this year’s recruiting class will suffer because of this move. Great pick-up by the Cats.

  36. SallyT Says:

    Huge mistake on UT’s part…HUGE!
