Yesterday when speaking with the media Ryan Harrow noted that he had spent some extra time in the gym working on his shot. Harrow linked his poor shooting to his struggles on the court saying “I think once I actually make a shot, I’ll get that confidence back that I can shoot, it’s just a mind thing, really, because in practice I’m hitting those same shots.”
Well today Harrow played perhaps his best game of the year and definitely his most complete. While his shooting was just 3-8 from the field Harrow played the entire game with an air of confidence. He missed shots but he kept attacking, he nabbed a few rebounds, and dished out six assists. The most telling stat though was Ryan’s one turnover. That one turnover was his only giveaway over the past three games.
If this team is going to grow into one of the top ten or top eight best squads in the land as Cal discussed following the game then they will do so behind the growth of Ryan Harrow. Coach said he was pretty pleased with the point guard’s play today except for a couple of lapses, ”I absolutely jerked him out of the game,” he said. ”The other parts of the game, I thought he did fine.”. Harrow at the 1 also seemed to have an impact on the other guys on the roster. Archie got those monster jams on the break as he was free to score and run the offense. Everything just seems to flow better with Harrow in charge.
Huskier Tone
Now Harrow just needs to continue to develop into the vocal leader of this group. as he said after the game “I think I’m yelling, but my yelling is like normal people’s talking.” Harrow needs to get loud on the court, which can be hard with his soft voice. Its just another aspect of his game that will be fun to watch as the year goes on. Hopefully today will be the first game on Harrow’s road to becoming the floor general that the Cats need to be successful. Otherwise it’s going to be a long year.

Better hope so. UK needs a legit point guard. Goodwin is at his best when he doesn’t have to make the on ball decisions, or bringing the ball on the fast break.

I fear the tards backcourt is going to heat up our guards with that press. Hope I am wrong.

Harrow is the most important player on our team. He is playing better and better each game. Now we need the other players to adjust their games to fit his game.Once he starts to penetrate they have to make themselves available so he has options. Right now they tend to stand and watch instead of moving to an open spot. He could of had a couple of lobs today if the bigs would have just rolled to the basket.

No way this team is a top ten team. You are delusional. This team is soft.

What happens Wiltjer, Harrow, Noel, and Cauley-Stein, come back next year. Does that hurt recruiting?

This years team would loose to last years team by 30.

You guys need Peyton Siva on your team to turn the ball over 15 times a game, by himself.

Noel is the only one even close to being a first round pick but Cal will push for at least 4 to declare. One word….EGO.

Word starting to spread that Neal Brown will be UK’s next offensive coordinator and that the announcement will come early next week.

I thought the team looked a lot better with Harrow in the game, he played well.

College BB in general and Coach Cal in particular depend on PG to run the game. This team will go as far as Harrow will take them, including Nat Champ. But it is all about the journey and this team is on one. Look at the team in Nov, then Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar. Already they have been top 5, out of top 25, and now look to be coming back to top 25.
No telling where they will end up, just enjoy the journey.

I completely agree with this post. Harrow needs to run the team. Mays needs to be the glue. Poythress the beast. Noel the defender. Willie the receiver. Goodwin the pusher. Wiltjer the Tray Man. If each player can fully ignite his role and own that single role while playing as a team all at once this team good go farther than I think most of us think. And if not next year is a comith.

Asking questions are genuinely pleasant thing if you
are not understanding anything completely, but this paragraph gives pleasant understanding even.

13 – It IS about the journey which is a lesson all Cat fans should’ve learned by now. Though we saw some improvement yesterday, come January we won’t remember this team in its current state. Camp Cal will force some serious changes. Right now, I’d just like to see these guys relax and enjoy themselves.
My Christmas list from the Cats: 1) Harrow – Run the Team 2) Wiltjer – hit your shots 3) Goodwin – Get control of yourself 4) Poythress – Show some emotion and look up “Assists” in the dictionary 5) WCS and Noel – Don’t leave your feet. 6) Mays and Polson – stay steady, boys. The team needs that. 7) Hood -lose the beard or whatever that stuff is you’re growing on your face (chia?). It has obviously become a wind drag and slows you down.

I don’t know what to think about this Camp Cal thing. You are supposed to get the players in shape before the season starts. If they are not in shape by Dec. 9th then I put that on the coaches. We used to have a conditioning program before we were allowed to touch a basketball. It usually lasted 2 weeks and probably 2 or 3 hours per day five days a week. We did all kinds of exercises for probably an hour or two. Jumping jacks, leg lifts, push ups sit ups,arm helicopter rotations, etc. Then we would do defensive slides all the way around the perimeter of the court several times. Then we would break into groups of two and do these drills where we would get into a defensive stance against our partner and we would slap the inside of each others legs and if you weren’t quick enough you would end up with big red welts on the inside of your legs. Fortunately I was a little quick point guard and I’d walk away with little to no marks on me. After all this, we would go outside and run 2 to 3 miles a day. The longer the weeks went along the longer distances we ran. Now, after these two weeks were up we would start getting into our regular practices. Our practices always ended in wind sprints or suicides or whatever you want to call them. We didn’t just run those to get punished, we ran them everyday to help stay in playing shape. I noticed Harrow looked like he almost had to make himself sprint back on defense. He looked like I used to when we were doing those last few sprints where you almost didn’t know if you had one more in you. So, saying all of that I have no idea if Cal is doing all this at the beginning of the year or if he is taking for granted that the players are going to come in to the fall and be in shape on their own but if they are still out of shape this time of year it is the coaching staffs fault. They control that.
