Monday marked the official arrival of Neal Brown to Lexington, his second tour of duty with the University of Kentucky football program.  Brown was a wide receiver for three seasons under Hal Mumme before transferring to Massachusetts for his senior season.  UK introduced him as its new offensive coordinator via press release on Monday afternoon, fulling a promise Mark Stoops made at his introductory press conference to run an entertaining offense that will throw the football.

Stoops called the hire a no-brainer — thanks to advice from Tim Couch — in the release: “Neal is a young, hungry, dynamic coach who has had a lot of success in the Big 12 (Conference). I want a style of offense that puts defenses in difficult situations. Also important to me was Neal’s familiarity with the people of Kentucky and the University. When you put together the football and the relationships, it was a no-brainer.”

Brown joins the Wildcats staff after three seasons at Texas Tech, where his offense ranked in the nation’s top-10 teams in passing offense, top-15 in total offense and top-25 in scoring offense, all three years.  He said he is excited to bring his style of play to Kentucky, the school he grew up rooting for.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to come home to the University that I grew up rooting for, and having played here, have a true personal investment in the program,” Brown said.  “Coach Stoops sold me on the job. I’m excited about his plan. He has a great vision about where he wants to take the program and how he wants to do it.”

Cue the Air Ride sirens.

Neal Brown will be joined by two fellow former Wildcats on Stoops’ new staff, although announcements weren’t made on Monday.  Former UK offensive lineman John Schlarman (1993-1997) will take over Mike Summers’ duties with the o-line; while former UK running back Chad Scott (2000) will coach the backs.  Scott joined the Texas Tech staff with Brown in 2010.

Schlarman will have big shoes to feel with the offensive line.  I’ve had conversations with UK linemen (both past and present) who were hoping to see Summers retained with the new regime.  He is very popular with the guys and many of them credit him for turning them into solid football players.  Don’t be surprised if Bobby Petrino, who Summers spent seven seasons under before moving back to Kentucky, hires him on the Hilltoppers’ staff.

Clay Travis was at the Bobby Petrino press conference in Bowling Green and he asked a question about the series with Kentucky, as only Clay Travis could.  He asked WKU athletic director Todd Stewart if he had any buyout offers from UK since hiring Petrino.  I think it was supposed to be a joke.  I think.  Stewart thanked Rich Brooks and Mitch Barnhart for setting up the four-game series.

While college football is filling up the newswire in the state of Kentucky, John Calipari is pushing his basketball team harder and harder each day to be the best they can be.  Last week, he told us he planned to turn up the intensity and add more conditioning.  We caught a glimpse of that in an exclusive video on CoachCal.com from inside one of the new practices.  Cal told his players, “This is a simple game.  This isn’t, ‘I’m going to prove that you’re wrong.’ Because who’s going to win every battle? I’m going to win every battle.”

Kentucky was absent from the AP college basketball top 25 poll for the second week in a row when the rankings were updated on Monday.  The Cats received 44 votes, good enough for 28th, after finishing 26th last week with 186 votes.  The Cats did, however, hang on in the USA Today poll at No. 22, three spots lower than last week.

In recruiting news, Andrew Wiggins’ decision is forever away, but his head coach told Scout.com that Wiggins will visit Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina once his season ends.  Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford also said Wiggins’ parents aren’t pressuring him to go to Florida State, their alma mater, and they’re going to let Andrew make his own decision.  Fulford added, “I don’t think Andrew will be the guy that holds off. When he knows, everybody will know.”

Set your DVRs to record ESPN at 8:00, Thursday evening.  The worldwide leader in sports will air a high school basketball game between Aaron Harrison and UK target Aaron Gordon.  Andrew Harrison is doubtful for the game with a hamstring injury.

Julius Randle will visit Kansas on February 16 for the Texas game.  It should be illegal for teams to host recruits during games against Rick Barnes.  It’s an unfair advantage.

College Football News named Landon Foster Second-Team Freshman All-American.  Hopefully, with Air Raid 2.0 in town, we can shake this reputation of being Punter U.  We need to here more, “TOUCHDOWN KENTUCKY!” and less, “Man, our punter can really kick the ball a long way.”

I’m going to use this space to ask Big Blue Nation to help out a friend of mine by bidding on this painting of John Calipari.  Aaron Kizer, an amazing artist from Owensboro, is auctioning off this painting of Coach Cal from his private collection.  Aaron’s wife is in UK Hospital battling limbic encephalitis, a rare disease, and the money will go to help pay her medical expenses.  Aaron did the painting in 15 minutes, shown here in this video.  It’s a really cool, unique piece of art.

  Homeland.  Watch it.  That’s all.

That’ll do it for now.  It’s going to be a long week without a basketball game, but we’ll have a preview of the bowl season and an interactive pick ‘em contest for our readers later in the week.  The winner will receive tickets to a UK basketball game.

Go Cats.

Listening to advise from Couch. Strike 1 against Stoops and staff.

  2. Bradley Says:

    2. Not knowing how to spell “advice”. Strike 3 to your opinion holding any water.

  3. Really? Says:

Are those shoes he is feeling leather? They must be soft

  4. 3rd Grade Spelling Bee Proctor Says:

    Blam Bitch!

Oh, wait.. it was just a misspelled word. Your opinion doesn’t have anything to do with that. Bradley, the Ritalin might be affecting your ability to cope. Come back when the chemicals balance.

  5. Cliff Hagan & Larry Ivy in the Continental Inn Hot Tub Says:

Don’t let Barney fool you. When I we were AD’s at UK we regularly beat Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss St. We never were at the bottom.

Now, UK football is really at the bottom of the SEC.

Ha, and you people are all joyfilled like white gay Obama voters. Open your eyes, your bankrupt yet filled with bourbon sauce from the reindeer at KSR.

Great job Mitch. BTW, how’d you get that sweetheart contract from Ree Todd with a record like that?

  6. s.motley Says:

    What about Dexter?

  7. oldschool Says:

Speaking of rankings – UK is also 84th in the RPI.
0-1 againt top 50 RPI teams.
1-3 against top 100 RPI teams.

But don’t worry. We gonna be sick next year. Cal’s bringing in another crop of untested 18-year-olds.

    It’s the Cal-Effect in full-effect.

    Own it!

  8. SadCat Says:

    Calendars are great…
    I really want one…

  9. 3rd Grade Spelling Bee Proctor Says:

#8 – Bradley – As long as you get credit for ignoring the dialog then I think we’re done here.

  10. BBN Says:

WKU fans saying they are thrilled to have a chance to beat UK next season and prevent us from going to a bowl game. They know the game is a must win for UK to get to six wins and become bowl eligible. They think the Petrino hire will spoil our chances at making the postseason.

  11. tdogg40330 Says:

    11) 2012 NATIONAL CHAMPS !!! and btw, this season has a long long way to go

  12. tdogg40330 Says:

    14) UK can win 6 games next season even w/o beating WKU.

  13. Ken in Middletown Says:

Bring back te AIR RAID sirens!!!

  14. booger Says:

Billy Clyde spotted in Bowling Green – Must be applying for job on football staff and becoming Petrino’s bff. He would be a good He’lltopper!!! Petrino has first round!!

  17. mores Says:

    13) It’s spelled “dialogue,” and your nonsense post before didn’t create one. Work harder on your smarts and less on sounding pretentious and, amazingly, you will sound smarter without sounding pretentious! It’s magic! It’s also generally typo-free.

  18. JVice Says:

23 (mores)- “Dialog” is a perfectly acceptable spelling in American English. Hard to condescend without being right, huh? Also, in re Homeland… I think it has a great storyline, with two of the worst lead actors on television today. Claire Danes may in fact be the worst.

  19. 3rd Grade Spelling Bee Proctor Says:

“It’s spelled dialogue” – Only if your a redcoat. Who’s pretentious now?

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dialog – Acceptable variant
    http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/british-and-american-spelling – Acceptable variant

Even your bible the Oxford Dictionary accepts dialog as the American spelling of the word.
Oxford says dialogue is “preferred” – yea, by the queen (where the book is written).

Correcting someone because it needs to be done – an opinion.
Correcting someone with a dialect variant – an a-$-$-h-0-1-e.

If the “dialog” is ignored to just correct the spelling – and the spelling is a minor oversight –> is superficial at the least. In your case it’s a repetitious compulsion suggesting a possible disorder.

You might want to see a doctor for that. I’ve got a better idea, go smoke a f-a-g !

  20. Proctors' boss Says:

    25. “you’re” fired!!!!!! You’re > your

  21. empire blue Says:

homeland should’ve been a one-season show. these last few episodes were unbelievable to the point of being preposterous. such a shame. it used to be great.

  22. Kmp Says:

    25. Lmao http://images.sodahead.com/polls/003217369/12932215_internet_tough_xlarge.jpeg don’t hurt yourself bud

  23. Seriously? Says:

    24) seriously? I’m pretty sure Claire Danes won the critics choice award, a golden globe, a primetime Emmy, and several other awards for her work on Homeland. You sir, are an idiot.

  24. UKGrad04 Says:

First, “dialog” is definitely an acceptable way to spell the word. It does smell a little douchebaggy, but it’s definitely acceptable.

Second, I watch Homeland ironically now. At this point it’s 7/5 Channing Tatum shows up in the finale.

  25. Couch-To-Yeast Says:

The Air Raid Offense: History, Evolution, Weirdness – From Mumme to Leach to Franklin to Holgorsen and Beyond. (includes Couch-To-Yeast beating Alabama footage)

  26. CatSinceBirth Says:

Don’t strut your stuff just yet Hilltopper’s. Petrino has now broken the ice. No large school would step up and hire him because of the negativity they would receive. All he has to do is prove himself for one year, and all of sudden he’s the darling of the available coaches. Enjoy him Hilltopper’s, as one year is all you get him. Guaranteed.

  27. carl spackler Says:

    Here hear….

  28. dgtuk Says:

Should make for a fun first game next year against WKU…

  29. bleedblueky Says:

If I were coach Cal, I would love to pay $10,000 to buy (and help out with the medical bill) to hang it on the wall of my study room :)

  30. BuyersRemorse Says:

Funny how all of sudden since Wku hired Bobby Petrino all the love and ksr great hire.Stoops talk has pretty much come to a halt!

  31. Grammar Troll Says:

The Priggish Grammar Troll – No matter what the discussion is about, the Priggish Grammar Troll will ignore the argument and pick on the one word you used incorrectly, like “alot” or misuses of “they’re,” “their” and “there.” (http://www.smosh.com/smosh-pit/articles/18-types-of-internet-trolls)

  32. hugh jorgan Says:

11–lotta bball yet to be played chump. springtime in the bluegrass is 3 months away. why don’t you concentrate on your loosiers since you think your boy crean’s system is so superior to cal’s.

  33. Jenny Craig Pitino Says:

Is Ramon Harris and Jorts on the UK basketball calendar again this year?

  34. English is spacial Says:

Some of us who know how to spell and use correct grammar just get SO TIRED of how un-educated some of you dumb mfers are. And then you want us to hear your opinions and lend some credence to them and take you seriously, when you can’t even type out one good, mistake-free sentence. It’s embarrassing!!! There are a lot of people from all around the country that probably read this blog. It just reinforces the stereotype that a lot of people have about Kentuckians. THAT’S why we point it out to you. FIX IT!! LEARN SOMETHING!!! Spend a little more time learning how to spell and less time playing video games. (Plus it’s just a HELL of a lot of fun to bust your balls about how freaking dumb you are)

  35. catty Says:

Your friend’s painting is awesome, I just don’t have that much money! I think he would have raised a LOT more money by selling chances on winning it. But I know that is a whole different ballgame-fundraising wise.

  36. Eric Says:

Old School for some reason STILL thinks that coach calipari is bad for UK. It gets so old reading his crap on every thread. Change the record.

Old school- if youre not happy with the way our basketball program is headed, i beg you, please switch your allegiance to Louisville or Indiana. They seem to be the type of programs that are run the “old school” way you want— and we all know theyve had TONS of success in the last 25 years.

  37. Nick Says:

Hol’ on a minute playa. Wiggins is going to visit when the season ends? BUT THE SEASON NEVER ENDS! WIGGINS IS NEVER GOING TO VISIT! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  38. barn Says:

34–do you know what this spells–GFY?

  39. English is spacial Says:

38 – must be one of the dumb ones.

  40. English is spacial Says:

Barn – you mad bro?? (been wanting to use that line)

  41. Really 34? Says:

Really? You post a diatribe on spelling writing a simple sentence, then you proceed to 1)begin a sentence with a conjunction (And) and 2) your last sentence is completely parenthetical with no ending punctuation? Bad form sir!

  42. oldschool Says:

Somebody PLEASE pay attention to me! I’m old and crotchety, my roids are acting up again, I have a corn on my left foot that is older than Coach Cal, and this morning it took 15 minutes to pee! Even the other old farts at the nursing home are ignoring me now, because they are tired of hearing me bitch about Calipari and how everyone should play the way IU does.

  43. English is spacial Says:

41 – “diatribe” woop woop good word. We got a smart one here boys!

  44. JT Says:

34- Since you opened up the proverbial can of worms yourself, let’s look at your post.

First, uneducated is not a hyphenated word.
Second, You only need one exclamation mark. Ever.
Third, “mfer” is not a word in the English language.
Fourth, there is no correct grammatical context to use all caps on random words.

I could continue, but I think it is safe to say that you need to shut up.

  45. English is spacial Says:

    44 – you mad bro?

  46. RealCatsFan Says:

oldschool, so you propose that Kentucky should hire Tubby back to the program and go back to his system. Am I hearing you right? FWIW, Cal is on record for saying that he wants the one-year rule to go to at least two years. He also wants more backing from the NBA and the NCAA to help insure the future for highly ranked players to encourage them to stay in school. You propose that Cal should avoid recruiting the top ranked players, and instead focus on four star and lower prospects. Fine – then that will leave these kids to go to schools like UNC, Florida, Duke, Baylor, yes, even IU. Do you think that the coaches of these programs aren’t pursuing these kids too? Ever pay attention to the other schools on their list?

EVERY school has peaks and valleys through the years. IU will fall off considerably after this year, as will Louisville. Next year UK will be a top contender again – wait and see. I’m willing to bet that we could go back and dig up some old posts by you saying that Calipari will NEVER win an NCAA championship. One thing I’ve learned in life: NEVER say “never”!

  47. Rockfield, KY Says:

Been in love with Claire Danes since My So Called Life. I will hear no bad talk about her.

  48. Nick Says:

    45 — What?

  49. English is spacial Says:

48 – I says, ARE YOU MAD BRO??? That is a phrase I have seen on here before and apparently is supposed to be cool to say to someone who is seemingly “all bent out of shape” about something. I think is supposed to be a condescending phrase. “Bro” is short for “brother” I think. And you’re suppose to leave out the word “are” because it is understood. Hence, “you mad bro?”. Popular among the kids these days.

  50. JT Says:

49- Actually, I think you’re supposed to (not suppose).

  51. English is spacial Says:

Yeah, JT, saw that. I don’t proofread my own stuff, because I RARELY make mistakes. And I mean RARE-LEE. I guess I will have to change that now. Hard to bust the balls of the stupid and spelling-challenged rednecks on here when you, yourself, have a typo. Oh well. C’est la vie. (That’s a French saying that means “such is life”, for all you corn pone red neckersons out that that wondered, “whut the hale he saying? Speakin all that forin langige…this is Amurhica, not some other damn kuntry”)

  52. rating the assistants Says:

    Mike Summers > John Schlarman

  53. Jvice Says:

47 – yeah it’s clear that I offended a couple of Claire Danes fans here. Golden globes mean nothing, as they are usually bought and paid for. I still contend that craning your neck out and making bug eyes does not constitute good acting.
