Name to watch: James Coley

by @ 4:02 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Multiple sources have told FootballScoop.com, a very reliable website, that Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley will join Stoops in Lexington.  If true, National Signing Day could be a very, very exciting day for fans of Kentucky football.

Coley has ties all over the state of Florida; he’s from Miami and was on the Miami Dolphins staff from 2003-2005.  He also served as recruiting coordinator at Florida State in 2008 and 2009 when he reeled in back-to-back top 10 classes for the Seminoles.  ESPN called him the best recruiter in the ACC in 2010.

He wouldn’t bring the high-powered offense you’d expect from a Neal Brown or Kliff Kingsbury hire, but James Coley would bring top talent to Lexington, maybe even from Florida State.  For example, current Florida State commit Michael Johnson, a 4-star cornerback, said Coley is like a father figure to him when he gave his verbal back in February.  Coley was also the lead recruiter for another Seminole commit, 4-star wide receiver Jesus Wilson, who also has a very strong relationship with Coley.

Let the OC speculation begin!

Looking forward to whoever he brings on staff with him. I think this is a great hire!

  2. HolySmokes Says:

HE RECRUITED JESUS!? How could you bet against this guy??

  3. zach Says:

Sounds like a total win win situation

  4. Matty Says:

Am I the only one who has heard that Stoops is going to bring on Randy Shannon as the DC? THAT is what I’d be super excited about.

  5. Oogie Says:

Sounds exciting… but what’s Coley’s motivation to make this move? Better relationship with Stoops than with Fisher? More $$$?

  6. joey Says:

Neal Brown OC and Randy Shannon DC

  7. SexnNursinHomes Says:

2- Don’t count out the Romans, they have a brutal defense headed by a guy named P.Pilot.

  8. UKUniFan Says:

It doesn’t have to be the true spread to be exciting. Heck, what Max Smith did against Kent State was exciting, and so was WKU despite his performance. It just has to score and move the ball and use the talent. We have depth at RB with good talent and should use it. I have watched FSU enough to know that they get back in the gun and throw the ball, and mix it up. IT IS ABOUT GETTING PLAYERS. Coley would be fine, it also is comfortable with Stoops. BIG DAY!!

  9. Katmandu Says:

Good deal, Richie Cunningham and “The Fonz”!

  10. Rick Minter Says:

    Looking for a DC?

  11. Mike Leach Says:

I feel jilted. Like I was invited to the Cadillac Ranch, then left outside the gate.

  12. Invisable Obama Says:

WLAP online stream says “Matt WALSH” is currently hosting the show. Haaaahaaa!

  13. KT Says:

I’m surprised some of our wonderful outspoken fans aren’t clamoring for Petrino as OC or some position coach. LOL. REALLY glad we didn’t take that guy, good hire Mitch, you made a whole bunch of people eat crow today AND you didn’t make me eat crow for having defended you all year. Thanks.

  14. KT Says:

That picture of Coley looks like he is smelling a fart. Just saying.

  15. Rockfield, KY Says:

    5. Rumor is that Fisher was going to hire a new OC this off season anyway. Apparently the guy recruits really well but the offense sputtered alot this past season. Also, there is a chance that Fisher leaves for another job. He’s been rumored to be unhappy at FSU, so they’re whole staff may be leaving voluntarily.

  16. Bledsoe's Biceps Says:

    14. No it doesn’t

  17. Dr PinDyke Says:

    #2) LOL, Im Sold!

  18. Well Says:

13.) Eat Crow? For what? He hired Mark Stoops who hasn’t been a head coach. I mean you can buy into what KSR is selling: that this a homerun hire or whatever but be rational. We haven’t done anything yet. Maybe we should wait until we win 5 games to be cooking any crow.

Also, any reason as to why this guy would leave to become the same position at a worse school/program?

  19. Jack Nicklaus Says:

Now is not the time to hire your buddies…hire the best OC you can that will score points and be exciting.

  20. Me Says:

If you look at the FSU message boards, all their fans hate this guy and would love him to go. This guy doesn’t excite me, I don’t care how good he recruits, even though we badly need good recruiting. If the FSU fans don’t want him, neither do I

  21. Bob wiley Says:

Just call him James P.I.M.P Coley

  22. cats1 Says:

Heard he wasn’t actually calling the plays. Jimbo was overseeing and he was not very happy about that.

  23. Jason Says:

Id rather have Neal Brown. i want that offense. He can find other recruiters.

  24. Me Says:

    #19…agreed

  25. g.rod333 Says:

Best of luck 2 Coach Stoops & BBN … We deserve it !!!!

  26. So/so hire Says:

#13 what do you mean made a lot of people eat crow? How have you come to that assessment. It will take about 3 years to know how this works out. Yes, I thought Patrino was the best choice and love for stoops to prove me wrong just as Brooks did. But if you think this hire is instant vindication for not hiring Patrino your mistaken. I like you have defended Barnhart all year. I still think giving every thing we knew AT THE TIME that hiring Joker was the right move. Once that move was made just like this one you have to give them 3 years minimum. Hind sight is 20/20 and I think we all know Joker was a huge failure, but on put that on him not Mitch. However let’s be real here most of the fan base wanted Patrino and Barnhart did not. That OK its Barnhart’s job to hire the coaches not the fans., but if Stoops fails Barnhart will be in trouble. The best thing for everyone evolved is if Stoops has a lot of success and wins big. Then I would be more then glad to eat crow, but it’s way to early to be sulking either way just yet.

  27. RealCatsFan Says:

#7, I have my money on the Lions, screw the Romans and the Christians…

  28. rick Says:

Petrino to Auburn, Stoops to KY, 2 years down the road , hope we dont have to play Auburn.

  29. RealCatsFan Says:

    #12, isn’t he gay?

  30. Reality Says:

    2013 – 3-9

    2014 – 5-7

    2015 – 7-5

    2016 – stoops leaves 4-8

    Start over

    Probable if it were petrino
    2013 – 4-8
    2014 – 7-5
    2016 – 9-3

    Petrino leaves. But looks better

  31. Stigall Says:

Gotta say I am as excited about UK football as I have been since Randall Cobb was here!

  32. Lame Says:

Yay we hit a pee wee league home run

    Lame
    Barntard swings and misses

  33. Adolphrollingover Says:

He wouldn’t bring the high-powered offense you’d expect from a Neal Brown or Kliff Kingsbury hire, but…….

Are you kidding me? This is what we have right now! Rick Minter and Joker. Now you have Rick Minter the Head Coach and Joker the OC. He better win right now. No excuses. The last guys got no time or support, and I won’t support these clowns until they win either. Good Luck Stoops.

  34. J in Orlando Says:

30 No way Petrino wins 9 games at UK…ain’t happening…that’s just delusional

  35. Can't Keep A God Man Down Says:

    7. — Oops, P.Pilate all these years later… has a big ol’ Church of Jesus running
his town now. Interesting how THAT worked out.

  36. seer Says:

#30, Wow, Reality. You’ve got it all figured out!

  37. fur eel Says:

In addition to the University of the SEC teams, I now can’t wait to see the Seminole bowl game.

  38. manbearpig Says:

#30 or could be like this

    2013-4-8

    2014- 7-6

    2015-8-5

    Under Petrino

    2013- 5-7

2014- Petrino has already left for another job or has entered in a Sexaholics Anonymous class led by Sexinnursinghomes

  39. cpacat Says:

#30) You are probably correct, after two years here, Petrino would have us on probation and not playing any games in 2015.

  40. Old Pogue Bourbon Says:

James Coley Height: 6-3 Weight: 270

  41. RealCatsFan Says:

“a Sexaholics Anonymous class led by Sexinnursinghomes”

#38, wouldn’t that be a little bit like an Alcoholics Anonymous class led by Billy Gillispie?

  42. RealCatsFan Says:

Holy Geesh, KSR Shop is hawking Stoops T-Shirts? I guess we can turn in our Indiana Hoosiers ridicule trump card…

  43. manbearpig Says:

#41, true and if you’re going to sin might as well learn from the best in both classes!

  44. Louisville Kentucky Mortgage Says:

As a big FSU fan, James Cooley is a hell of a recruiter. Owns South Florida. Cuban Coffee Time.

  45. classof68 Says:

According to Wikipedia Coley was present for the 2002 bluegrass miracle. An omen?

  46. Smart guy Says:

#26 Patrino? If you like the guy so much maybe you should learn how to spell his name haha.

  47. dave Says:

18-bob stoops was 1st year HC at oklahoma
    and o’brien at PENN ST
    and muschamp at UF
    richt at UGA
    pelini at NEB
    kelly at ORE
    gundy at OK ST
    mullen at MSU
i know. only small programs hire coordinators

  48. dave Says:

    stoops troops ksr shop? seriously?

  49. CATS Says:

And remember, it WILL take a few years to turn things around…it would take Nick Saban 3 years to turn things around the way things are now. And please no moron better say “well Joker didn’t get any time”…Joker didn’t have to turn anything around…he just needed to continue to perform at the level of Brooks…but instead he fired all of Brooks coaches and failed miserably. It will take Stoops 3 years minimum to turn things around…but I fully expect that 90% of our fans do not get that.

  50. Mitch'dBeSmart Says:

If he’d hire Bob Stitt for OC. Guy is doing legit things and a lot of intelligent coaches are using his plays.

  51. Finally Says:

Ellis Johnson is now looking for a job after just one season at southern miss. He may not have a great record as a head coach, but the man is one heckuva great DC.

  52. Han Says:

Would be interesting if we end up stealing recruits with back to back major sports hires. I don’t think it’s wrong (recruits go for coaches as often or more often than the school), but we’ll catch some hell from opposing fans.

What do other fans in the SEC think?

And how likely is it we get this guy or Neal? SEC is a definite step up with the way some other conferences are collapsing, and if you do well here, you could get another head coach job quick.

Also, is Couch going to start coaching, become a part of the staff? He’s been pretty vocal lately, and though his NFL career sucked thanks to injury, he knows college offense.

    4) Where you hearing that?

    5) ACC is falling apart and maybe we’ll offer the money.

    18) Yup, he needs to prove himself with improvement the next couple years, but the BP fans need to move on now.

  53. Wallace Says:

Rumors going around the Joker will remain on the team as a OC

  54. Urincatland Says:

Louisville can kiss their easy wins over UK goodbye!! We gonna be kicking some a$$. Cudos to Mitch for the hire of Stoops. He really exceeded my expectations!! Great hire Mitch!! Mark, we welcome you and your family with open arms to the family of The Big Blue Nation!! Go Cats!!

  55. Han Says:

    49) He and his staff will need to teach their system and start bringing in recruits. We may see some turnover (we have 3 potential starting QBs who will likely all want the job, not to mention anyone he recruits).

Ultimately, we may still be really bad a couple years, but he has to show improvement and show that he wants us to be better, not just that he’s having bad luck like Joker always seemed to say. I want him to come in here and go after the big schools. That’s how you win over a doormat fanbase. As soon as FSU is done, start doing the circuit, promote with Cal, and start harassing his new bosses to increase his budget.

  56. buckster1 Says:

30 and 32 are absolutely nuts. How in the heck would you know how petrino would do here? R U stupid or what. You are guessing just as much as if I said Stoops will win the national title here. I hope he does but I would never try and predict it. Saying Stoops will fail and petrino would be successful is ridiculous.

  57. Rumors Says:

Enough 53 joker is bye bye you made that up. My source says Rick minter is staying as dc lol

  58. Yeary Says:

I said on here if they hire Petrino I would buy season tickets…..well I LOVE this hire and will buy season tickets this year!!! GO CATS!!!

  59. Big daddy Says:

Welcome Mark! It’s nice to have hope again. Good job as well Mitch Barnhart. I never thought I would say that.

  60. Michael Says:

James Cooley, BBN wants you too. Join the movement. Mitch Barnhart listened to BBN. You can’t be a BCS team without someone from a BCS school. GREAT HIRE!!!!!

  61. JLivermore Says:

If our main recruiting base is Florida, we’re screwed. The quality players aren’t choosing UK over better SEC and ACC alternatives just because of the OC.

  62. Bulldawg Says:

@39, you can say a lot of things about Petrino, but probation? Check yourself fo you wreck yoself. Petrino has never been in trouble with the NCAA… Anyway, I hope Stoops works out because I would rather UK be good in football than to say I told you so when it comes to Petrino. I really do hope I eat crow and if I do I will season it to perfection while watching UK win games. GO CATS!!!!

  63. dave Says:

    this actually could happen.
    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/seminoles/os-fsu-seminoles-news-1027-20121126,0,3521537.story
fisher/coley have handled play-calling at FSU.
fisher is now going to hire a new OC to take over play-calling instead of coley and coley (disrespected) wants out. makes sense.

  64. Bigbluestorm Says:

I hope he brings in a OC that makeS the game exciting and puts up alot of points, I dont want a great defense with a mediocre offense, Wining 6 TO 3 everyweek, maybe great but boring. Lets hope its a homerun with OC someone who airs it out, we have somegood QBs COMING BACK NEXT YR.

  65. mudcreekmark Says:

Talking players from Miami to play for Florida State is probably alot easier than talking them to into coming all the way up to Kentucky. That being said, Miami did build a dynasty with players from the Miami area. Getting a few of those each year sure would help though.

  66. gridiron_cat Says:

@dave, if that’s the case then we will still need an OC even if we bring in Coley. Let’s go for Kingsbury or Brown and do this thing right.

  67. Hidingmyname Says:

SO if your not CHICKEN…..make a snood comment and POST YOUR NAME TOO…..until then you are a Louisville Cardinal fan. This hire is great and it doesn’t have to be proven that he’s a good coach. We already know that he will be a lot better than what we’ve had. Celebrate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your so smart about your predictions, then post your real name so everyone will know.

  68. comments off Says:

lol… matt said we could not comment on his new t-shirt design. clown.

  69. Beavis Says:

#61 Why not recruit Fla ?? Are we supposed to just pick up what the schools like Bama,,,LSU and Fla don’t want ? Hell no. Go after the top recruits,,,,make them tell you no. We will never be able to compete in the SEC until we get some of those recruits.

  70. Mr G Says:

Some of you guys like Reality and Lame need to come over here and kiss my a$$. It is quite ignorant that Matt would end the registration requirement to post, but he did and that’s that. But I’ll call you out…you haters are either U of L fans, Tennessee fans, Indiana fans, bastardized transexuals whose surgeries didn’t take, or fresh dingleberry collectors…regardless, I would greatly enjoy kicking your narrow asses back to whatever hellhole you crawled out of. Screw you haters and screw your damn mothers…Oh, wait…I already did that. Scum sucking losers.

  71. So/so hire Says:

I think we need to get the top talent from Lousville before we worry to much about Fla. this is how Brooks had success and the only way UK will ever compete regularly. I agree that we need to try to get the best player we can regardless of their location. It’s just that Lousville high school football is a good as anywhere and their is some top shelf talent in our back yard. It’s no accident the when strong started beating Joker for the talent their they also passed us up as a program. Kentucky doesn’t have many top high school players in it but for UK to be strong we must get the ones who are. Then we can get what we can from everywhere else.

  72. dave Says:

71- so dumb. strong/uofl passed uk bc they had teddy bridgewater & were outcoaching us.

  73. Wow Says:

71- wow are you that stupid!? Strong recruits HARD
    Out of Florida! Miami specifically!

  74. Not Jerry Tipton's Uncle Says:

#9 does that mean Stoops is Ralph Malph?
