Rumors of who will take over the job that Joker Phillips left vacant are running rampant all over the internet and radio (radio that hasn’t been hacked by Terrorists that is). The “anonymous sources” are coming out of the woodwork yet again, reporting that prospective coaches are looking for horse farms in Versailles on their iPads, while on their flight to Lexington. Yes, coaching searches do seem to bring out the most fanatical of people, but we’re all a little crazy from time to time. Anyhow, the most recent guy rumored to be in play for Kentucky’s coaching vacancy is alleged favorite of Mitch Barnhart, San Jose State head coach, Mike MacIntyre. Of course, he has denied any contact from Kentucky, but it doesn’t stop us from speculating on whether or not he’d make a solid hire. By now his coaching roots and background as a person are all well known by Kentucky fans, but how do his teams actually perform on the field? To find out, I examined many of his team’s most meaningful statistics on both offense and defense over the past three seasons to see where his teams shine and where they struggle.
As you can see from the above table, MacIntyre’s offenses over the past three seasons have improved drastically from the one he inherited in 2010. This improvement on offense is mainly due to Quarterback play. In MacIntyre’s first two years as coach of the Spartans, his offenses merely had average play from the most important player on the field. But, current Spartan Quarterback, David Fales, who was named starter this season after a stint in Junior College, is the main reason for the offensive explosion this season. Not only did he help guide his team to a 10-2 record, but he set two school records in the process; completion percentage (72.7%) and passer rating (170.9). Something encouraging to remember for Kentucky fans; the Wildcats have two excellent prospects returning next season in Maxwell Smith and Patrick Towles. Both showed flashes of brilliance last season, but with guidance from MacIntrye the two could potentially shine right away.
One really must marvel at what MacIntyre has been able to accomplish with the Spartan defense since his tenure began in San Jose three short years ago. In that time, their scoring defense has dropped nearly 14 points per game while every other category above has dropped as well. The most notable category where the Spartans excel is recovering opponent fumbles. Each of the past two seasons have seen San Jose finish among the top of the heap in college football in terms of gaining fumbles. This has been an instrumental reason for the improvement in scoring defense. In MacIntrye’s first season, the Spartans couldn’t stop opponents from moving down the field or force them to turn the ball over. The next season they forced more turnovers, but still had issues stopping opponents. This season was an entirely different story, not only did they force tons of opponent turnovers, but they didn’t allow teams to move down field either. That’s defense 101 right there, and MacIntyre’s team passed with flying colors in 2012. This is not only helpful to Kentucky because our defense was bad (obviously), but his style of coaching is perfectly suited for the SEC’s run heavy attacks. If opponents choose to keep it on the ground, they will have a higher chance of fumbling, thus giving Kentucky a higher chance of winning.
Mike MacIntyre has been a relative unknown during the entire coaching search, but now he’s apparently near the top of the list. This has the potential to be an excellent hire for Kentucky; he has SEC roots, coaches an excellent defense, and has experience in rebuilding a program in absolute shambles. Critics will often point out that he has a career losing record, but that tends to happen when you inherit a program with limited scholarships and only have three seasons to fix it (and fix it he did). It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll ever wear the blue & white, but he’d be an excellent fit if he ever did.

And I even like the guy from what I’ve heard..to me he sounds like a Matthew Mitchell hire, but really let’s try to get out of MacIntyre’s a$$ a bit, what do you say?

I really love the people who look at those posts, all the numbers and all the nice things Mac can bring and you get responses like “This is the best we can do?”.
Yeah. One of the better up and coming coaches in the entire country. That’s all. No big deal. We should be able to get the best in the country. To a 2-10 doormat of the best conference and the best division in all of the NCAA, a team who got like, 15 people to show up against Vandy. Why WOULDN’T you take this job over anything else?
If Mac wants to come here, you get him, in my opinion.

Darrell Hazell and Dave Doeren have done more with their programs and recruit areas we need to recruit more than this mediocre wanna be. Hell kent state could earn a BCS bowl berth this weekend.

Macintyre or Stoops would be the first choices for the blue and white but neither will come out and admit they are taking the job! They have loose ends to tie up before either would announce! KSR is giving us what they have, whether right or wrong when they have! Fox News’ motto is we report you decide! Hope there isn’t any copy right issues! Why isn’t Dave Doerens name not being mentioned more? He was a DC at Wisconsin and took northern Illinois to 11-1 and the only loss was a one point loss at Iowa. Plus he recruits the north which we need to do.

Macintyre has done enough to be judge good or bad. He inherited a bad program and has had a great year but what if he stays a couple more years and doesn’t do better than 6-6? The fact he was at the mediocre ole miss and terrible duke should make everyone a little weary of only one good year.

Ok so I was for all 3 of those coaches, I hate to say it but Mitch needs to suck it up and get Petrino. Talented people are often difficult, but it’s worth it. It’s worth it for Barnhart to save his job and deal w/ a difficult person.

MacIntyre would be a good hire but can he recruit? Stoops would be a great hire for recruiting alone and that is the only way you can compete on a SEC level. Also the name recognition goes a long way in recruiting.

I’ll definetely back whichever coach gets hired, although I wish it was one I knew a little more about before his name came up for the job. I wasn’t expecting a huge name but at least a coach that, according to another post I saw on KSR, “I don’t have to google to find out what they’ve done”. I guess my expectations were a little high considering our program, but if Barnhart says money isn’t an option, why not prove it and go after a more well known coach?

I was watching ESPN this afternoon and Jessie Palmer was talking about Auburn hiring Petrino. He said that Petrino would be an excellent choice and the enitre panel agreed for a variety of reasons. It blows my mind that UK wouldn’t give Petrino serious consideration. There are so many good coaches out there that would love another chance and UK offers an opportunity to coach in the SEC without as much pressure as most SEC coaches have. I cannot believe that Petrino, Tressel, Bowden, Mangini, and others wouldn’t seriously consider UK as long as UK was dedicated to making UK Football relevant in the SEC. The names of McIntyre, Stoops, and Dykes wouldn’t have made most of the BBN’s 3rd tier at the beginning of this coaching search and now we are desperately accepting these choices because Barnhart has made a mockery of the entire process. We need a coach that can flip the switch for the program and make us relevant ASAP. We don’t need yet another rebuilding process and frankly I don’t think the fans will suffer through one again. The best decision for the UK Football program is not another project coach and the best decision for the business side of UK Athletics is a coach that brings excitement to the masses of the BBN.

According to Larry Vaught concerning the football team meeting held today:
“Another parent was a bit shocked by what his son told him. He indicated there was “no word yet” on the coach, which he could accept. However, he didn’t like what he heard that UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart told the team about needing to give a better effort and that played a role in Phillips being fired.”

How do all these posters “know” Mitch did not inquire of Petrino? If Petrino said “no” neither he,nor Mitch, would say so now. If Mitch hasn’t inquired, Petrino isn’t going to admit UK doesn’t want him. Interesting that he is not speculated for UT, NC State; looks like Auburn may be his only potential landing spot.
