Rumors of who will take over the job that Joker Phillips left vacant are running rampant all over the internet and radio (radio that hasn’t been hacked by Terrorists that is). The “anonymous sources” are coming out of the woodwork yet again, reporting that prospective coaches are looking for horse farms in Versailles on their iPads, while on their flight to Lexington. Yes, coaching searches do seem to bring out the most fanatical of people, but we’re all a little crazy from time to time. Anyhow, the most recent guy rumored to be in play for Kentucky’s coaching vacancy is alleged favorite of Mitch Barnhart, San Jose State head coach, Mike MacIntyre. Of course, he has denied any contact from Kentucky, but it doesn’t stop us from speculating on whether or not he’d make a solid hire. By now his coaching roots and background as a person are all well known by Kentucky fans, but how do his teams actually perform on the field? To find out, I examined many of his team’s most meaningful statistics on both offense and defense over the past three seasons to see where his teams shine and where they struggle.
As you can see from the above table, MacIntyre’s offenses over the past three seasons have improved drastically from the one he inherited in 2010. This improvement on offense is mainly due to Quarterback play. In MacIntyre’s first two years as coach of the Spartans, his offenses merely had average play from the most important player on the field. But, current Spartan Quarterback, David Fales, who was named starter this season after a stint in Junior College, is the main reason for the offensive explosion this season. Not only did he help guide his team to a 10-2 record, but he set two school records in the process; completion percentage (72.7%) and passer rating (170.9). Something encouraging to remember for Kentucky fans; the Wildcats have two excellent prospects returning next season in Maxwell Smith and Patrick Towles. Both showed flashes of brilliance last season, but with guidance from MacIntrye the two could potentially shine right away.
One really must marvel at what MacIntyre has been able to accomplish with the Spartan defense since his tenure began in San Jose three short years ago. In that time, their scoring defense has dropped nearly 14 points per game while every other category above has dropped as well. The most notable category where the Spartans excel is recovering opponent fumbles. Each of the past two seasons have seen San Jose finish among the top of the heap in college football in terms of gaining fumbles. This has been an instrumental reason for the improvement in scoring defense. In MacIntrye’s first season, the Spartans couldn’t stop opponents from moving down the field or force them to turn the ball over. The next season they forced more turnovers, but still had issues stopping opponents. This season was an entirely different story, not only did they force tons of opponent turnovers, but they didn’t allow teams to move down field either. That’s defense 101 right there, and MacIntyre’s team passed with flying colors in 2012. This is not only helpful to Kentucky because our defense was bad (obviously), but his style of coaching is perfectly suited for the SEC’s run heavy attacks. If opponents choose to keep it on the ground, they will have a higher chance of fumbling, thus giving Kentucky a higher chance of winning.
Mike MacIntyre has been a relative unknown during the entire coaching search, but now he’s apparently near the top of the list. This has the potential to be an excellent hire for Kentucky; he has SEC roots, coaches an excellent defense, and has experience in rebuilding a program in absolute shambles. Critics will often point out that he has a career losing record, but that tends to happen when you inherit a program with limited scholarships and only have three seasons to fix it (and fix it he did). It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll ever wear the blue & white, but he’d be an excellent fit if he ever did.

OK, KSR, I am not one to indulge in conspiracies, but enough with the MacIntyre hype…tell me about Dykes, and Andersen….
Really, unless MacIntyre has hired you as his PR firm, please enough!
And I even like the guy from what I’ve heard..to me he sounds like a Matthew Mitchell hire, but really let’s try to get out of MacIntyre’s a$$ a bit, what do you say?

I’m starting to wish we just kept Joker… I think we’re not going to be in better anytime soon. This guy is the best we can do? I think this is an epic FAIL, unless of course something really craz happens that we don’t see coming: NFL guy maybe?

I really love the people who look at those posts, all the numbers and all the nice things Mac can bring and you get responses like “This is the best we can do?”.
Yeah. One of the better up and coming coaches in the entire country. That’s all. No big deal. We should be able to get the best in the country. To a 2-10 doormat of the best conference and the best division in all of the NCAA, a team who got like, 15 people to show up against Vandy. Why WOULDN’T you take this job over anything else?
If Mac wants to come here, you get him, in my opinion.

November 26th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
Darrell Hazell and Dave Doeren have done more with their programs and recruit areas we need to recruit more than this mediocre wanna be. Hell kent state could earn a BCS bowl berth this weekend.
November 26th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
Ron Cooper is the next coach.
November 26th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
#14 – cracker jack – Maybe if you were faster, what you say would mean something.
I guess you have to wait until you get to the bottom of the box. I understand.
November 26th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
@ Burge
Well he’s going to change that in a month. I think you can stop complaining about his bowl-lessness.
How dare he take over a 2-12 SJSU team and only get to a bowl in his third season! The audacity.
November 26th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
# 11 Joe that clearly went over your head. You’ve been posting dumb stuff all night. Please leave.

18) Jason
It was actually 1-12 and if he accepts the uk job he won’t coach the bowl and won’t get credit for it.
November 26th, 2012 at 9:55 pm
Macintyre or Stoops would be the first choices for the blue and white but neither will come out and admit they are taking the job! They have loose ends to tie up before either would announce! KSR is giving us what they have, whether right or wrong when they have! Fox News’ motto is we report you decide! Hope there isn’t any copy right issues! At this point I must state that am not an employee of nor do I have any relationship with KSR! My statements are my own and were made with with my own bias!
November 26th, 2012 at 9:56 pm
Hire Kingbury, now. More importantly who is the mystery football player joining the basketball team? Josh Forrest?
November 26th, 2012 at 9:57 pm
Why isn’t Dave Doerens name not being mentioned more? He was a DC at Wisconsin and took northern Illinois to 11-1 and the only loss was a one point loss at Iowa. Plus he recruits the north which we need to do.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:02 pm
Macintyre has done enough to be judge good or bad. He inherited a bad program and has had a great year but what if he stays a couple more years and doesn’t do better than 6-6? The fact he was at the mediocre ole miss and terrible duke should make everyone a little weary of only one good year.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:04 pm
Ok so I was for all 3 of those coaches, I hate to say it but Mitch needs to suck it up and get Petrino. Talented people are often difficult, but it’s worth it. It’s worth it for Barnhart to save his job and deal w/ a difficult person.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
Wow a lot of posts are being deleted. Most didn’t even say anything offensive. The KSR folks are being sensitive
November 26th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
How could UK offer this guy Millions of Dollars when he’s never been to a bowl game before?
KSR and Barnhart are trying to sell you on the premise that this guy knows winning football.
No bowl games = You don’t know winning football
November 26th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Give it up, I was never interested in the UK job. I just wanted to get my name back out there.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
is it true that the girl in the picture below is really Ratt Joness? the one on the right…
November 26th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
with the list of final 4….should have kept joker and waited to next season to search.

November 26th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
I would take Darrell hazell over Macintyre at least he has a chance to take kent state to a BCS bowl this weekend.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Hi ya’ll, i heard you think it’s me in the picture below. We’ll you’d be right. Happy halloween. And yes, it’s a fish-sandwich!

Mitch: Hey Matt, when you guys post the stuff I tell you to post, you have to follow up and delete comments that point out the stuff we’re trying to hide.

Who in the heck is this H. T.. G. person? and who’s Ratt Joans?
November 26th, 2012 at 10:12 pm
Did Mitch really say that to Mr. Jones? That doesn’t seem like something he would say.

Mitch Barnhart is on the hunt for anyone not named Bobby Petrino.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:22 pm
If we could only get Mitch Barnhart to admit to the mistakes he’s made in his life then this whole thing would be a non-issue.

STOPPP!!!!!
November 26th, 2012 at 10:24 pm
Heard on WHAS Radion tonight that J.C. Tipton of the Courier-Journal says Stoops, Jones and Dykes are out as their agents told them the UK job is a career killer for up and comers. Being for real here. (Tipton must have tweeted this tonight.)
November 26th, 2012 at 10:25 pm
Quiet, #43. The only thing Tipton tweets are casserole recipes and pictures of his dong.

November 26th, 2012 at 10:28 pm
when people are held accountable for the quality of their comments, burgie is banned and kicked in the d*ck
November 26th, 2012 at 10:29 pm
Wow! Wasn’t sure and didn’t believe it but;
1). KSR Thinks MacIntyre will give them best access to KSR. Or..
2). KSR wants what Mitch wants..or
3). All of the above.
PROBLEM: Has nothing to do with winning in the SEC.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:29 pm
MacIntyre would be a good hire but can he recruit? Stoops would be a great hire for recruiting alone and that is the only way you can compete on a SEC level. Also the name recognition goes a long way in recruiting.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:31 pm
42. best comment of the night……right KSR?
November 26th, 2012 at 10:31 pm
#40- EXCELLENT comment/post…IF only others would realize it!
November 26th, 2012 at 10:33 pm
#43- Certainly hope/pray he’s wrong!
November 26th, 2012 at 10:34 pm
glad you can see the point I’m making, #50. It’s pretty ridiculous, isn’t it?
November 26th, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Sounds like another billy Clyde!!!! Fire Mitch!!!
November 26th, 2012 at 10:38 pm
I’ll definetely back whichever coach gets hired, although I wish it was one I knew a little more about before his name came up for the job. I wasn’t expecting a huge name but at least a coach that, according to another post I saw on KSR, “I don’t have to google to find out what they’ve done”. I guess my expectations were a little high considering our program, but if Barnhart says money isn’t an option, why not prove it and go after a more well known coach?
November 26th, 2012 at 10:40 pm
Derrick Dooley v 2.5
November 26th, 2012 at 10:50 pm
Tommy Tuberville? With Neal Brown as OC? Gene Chzick as DC? . . . . . Anyone? . . . . . .Anyone?
November 26th, 2012 at 11:00 pm
No sane coach is coming to a program that has been begging for a few grand for a recruiting room for 5 years and get told no. Like our new track though. Fire the azz clown ad
November 26th, 2012 at 11:09 pm
Thanks to Mitch’s procrastination we are now down to taking anyone that will come.
November 26th, 2012 at 11:18 pm
I was watching ESPN this afternoon and Jessie Palmer was talking about Auburn hiring Petrino. He said that Petrino would be an excellent choice and the enitre panel agreed for a variety of reasons. It blows my mind that UK wouldn’t give Petrino serious consideration. There are so many good coaches out there that would love another chance and UK offers an opportunity to coach in the SEC without as much pressure as most SEC coaches have. I cannot believe that Petrino, Tressel, Bowden, Mangini, and others wouldn’t seriously consider UK as long as UK was dedicated to making UK Football relevant in the SEC. The names of McIntyre, Stoops, and Dykes wouldn’t have made most of the BBN’s 3rd tier at the beginning of this coaching search and now we are desperately accepting these choices because Barnhart has made a mockery of the entire process. We need a coach that can flip the switch for the program and make us relevant ASAP. We don’t need yet another rebuilding process and frankly I don’t think the fans will suffer through one again. The best decision for the UK Football program is not another project coach and the best decision for the business side of UK Athletics is a coach that brings excitement to the masses of the BBN.
November 26th, 2012 at 11:43 pm
#56 I like. Maybe hard to get all three. In TX I’m hearing Tuberville is top of the list at Arkansas along with Patterson at TCU.
November 26th, 2012 at 11:45 pm
56, I live in Montgomery, AL and would have no problem with that!
November 27th, 2012 at 12:08 am
59) I hear ya.. PETRINO OR BUST in my book… Actually stoops and I may keep my season tickets as well tho.. but macyintire?!!! HAHA.. give me a break…. Atleast I’ll save some money I guess bc my gut says Mitch BLOWS this
November 27th, 2012 at 12:24 am
The Kentucky football program is ruined. Thanks Mitch. You should resign or be fired when this fiasco is over. The only solution now is to hire Bobby Petrino if that is still even possible. It’s become a very sad state of affairs folks…
November 27th, 2012 at 12:47 am
Had anyone heard of James Franklin before he got hired by Vandy? Fact is, UK is likely just going to hope that it falls ass backwards into a good, unknown coach like Vandy did. And,apparently, KSR is going to rubber-stamp whoever they hire.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:59 am
According to Larry Vaught concerning the football team meeting held today:
“Another parent was a bit shocked by what his son told him. He indicated there was “no word yet” on the coach, which he could accept. However, he didn’t like what he heard that UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart told the team about needing to give a better effort and that played a role in Phillips being fired.”
Why hasn’t this been mentioned by KSR?
November 27th, 2012 at 1:37 am
How do all these posters “know” Mitch did not inquire of Petrino? If Petrino said “no” neither he,nor Mitch, would say so now. If Mitch hasn’t inquired, Petrino isn’t going to admit UK doesn’t want him. Interesting that he is not speculated for UT, NC State; looks like Auburn may be his only potential landing spot.
November 27th, 2012 at 4:04 am
Jimmy Johnson.
November 27th, 2012 at 5:07 am
I am so freaking tired of KSR spitting this crap out of their mouths at me.
“Critics will often point out that he has a career losing record, but that tends to happen when you inherit a program with limited scholarships and only have three seasons to fix it (and fix it he did). It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll ever wear the blue & white, but he’d be an excellent fit if he ever did.”
(vomits)
“his style of coaching is perfectly suited for the SEC’s run heavy attacks. If opponents choose to keep it on the ground, they will have a higher chance of fumbling, thus giving Kentucky a higher chance of winning.”
(bull****, I have seriously never read a worse piece of writing in my life)
