SI.com: NBA scouts assess Kentucky’s class

by @ 1:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

In the latest edition of Sports Illustrated, four NBA executives sat down with the magazine to evaluate the NBA potential of Kentucky’s top four pro prospects: Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress, Archie Goodwin and Willie Cauley-Stein.

Below you’ll find one scout’s assessment for each Cat and there’s a link at the bottom that’ll take you to the rest.  Enjoy…

Nerlens Noel

Western Conference GM: “Noel impacts the game so much from the defensive end of the floor. He’s more skilled than people realize. His thing right now is consistency. The other thing that is impressive is he seems to embrace what it is that he does versus trying to prove what he can do outside of his box. You don’t see that from a lot of young guys.”

Alex Poythress

Western Conference executive: ”He’s a beast. He has a good body and I think he will eventually play outside and shoot the three. He’s a definite first-round pick and he should rise on most people’s boards quickly. He has a tendency to try to make too many plays, but he will get better with coaching.”

Archie Goodwin

Western Conference executive: “Archie is a freak athlete. The issue is he plays too wild. He can’t play the point guard in our league because he looks to score every time. He needs to learn to play off the ball as a 2 more. There are too many times that I watch him and he is a little out of control.”

Willie Cauley-Stein

Western Conference executive: “I see him as a fourth big in the NBA. You have to watch him closely because he is not ready yet. He needs a lot of work. But he will probably come out. He is limited offensively. Right now he is a rebounder who alters shots, blocks shots. He is decent out of the post but he doesn’t look like he has a good feel for playing there. And I didn’t see any moves from him that stood out.”

  2. tdogg40330 Says:

I agree with everything he said, well put.

  3. Joe Says:

Don’t go Willie !!! We need a center next year and you for sure need a lot of developing even as talented as you are. Willie come back…

  4. John Says:

Not sure I agree with him on WCS. When he gets touches he has looked really good scoring the ball.

    WHERE IS POLSON!?!

  6. Bobby H Says:

Archie will be the best of the bunch. Right now he’s playing a position he’s not use to. In his natural position he’ll be deadly.

  7. tdogg40330 Says:

    6) its possible we might not get to see that though, he might have to be
the PG all year. I think he’ll develope it a good PG before its said and
done …. either way he’s still a player.

  8. Raazoul Says:

Hey NBA scouts, how about give these 18yr olds at least 10 games before you analyze their future? Poythress will be in the NBA for a long time, he’s the best of the bunch. Goodwin is good, but there are a thousand little fast scoring guards that play kinda out of control in the NBA. He’ll be one more.

  9. Jon Says:

I’m most impressed with WCS. I think he is very skilled offensively. I’m not sure what these scouts are watching. Perhaps they need to watch Willy play more.

I am the least impressed with Goodwin. He’s a 6’4” 2guard and I just don’t see him being any better in the NBA than Jody Meeks.

  10. DC4Uk Says:

Goodwin will run the point is my guess for now. He’s a slasher who can get to rim the easiest but needs to learn to dish the ball and not take a charge or lose the ball in the lane. All Cals pgs have done that in the beginning of the season. Mays will play the 2. I think this might be best cuz Archie is most athletic and is good size for pg. This is all a guess, coach knows best.
