Given the guy’s ego, I think he might prefer UK to Auburn or Tennessee. At those schools, he’s expected to win, they’ve won before, they have NCs. No big deal to get those programs back on track. In Kentucky, he would be King, and have his choice of hot young blondes

Open suggestion to Mitch Barnhart: DO NOT CONSIDER BOBBY PETRINO for the UK football job. Reasons?
1. He’s an ass and has no class.
2. I’m pretty sure he spent his entire time at UL mocking the UK football program every chance he got.
3. He’s an ass and has no class.
4. If he would come to UK and win, the first opportunity he has to bolt for a better job, he will, and he may not even wait to the end of the year. In fact, he might even leave at half time of a game and not come back.
5. He’s an ass and has no class.
6. He has burned bridges EVERYWHERE he has been: Louisville, Arkansas, and the Atlanta Falcons.

Of course I want to beat Maryland & Duke, but fans need to be ready to lose to both. We aren’t going to be very good at the start of the season. We might not even be that good until about February. Getting beat early shouldn’t shock anyone.

ANY issues with Petrino can be settled in the contract IN FAVOR OF UK! If Petrino wants to cach at UK, he will agree with it. If he is just using UK to get at UT or Aub, big deal. At least we will have tried and it won’t cost anything to try.

I don’t want Bobby Petrino. I have watched UK football for years, no matter how bad or good they are. I even watched them this season – including seeing one game live. If they hire Bobby, I won’t watch a game. I don’t even care if they compete for the SEC title.

Matt happens to know very little about football, and is interested in KSR over what’s optimal for UK but he also happens to be correct about Petrino (just for some of the wrong reasons — all this I know stuff you don’t know doesn’t fly, but every reason to not hire Petrino is in the public domain)

The only reason he got fired @ Arkansas is because of the fooling around w/employee, if he hadn’t done that he’d still be there. Atlanta Falcons yes he did screw up there, UL hired the wrong coach to be his replacement, which is why they don’t like him.I heard on another show how Petrino was strict w/player, no cell phones in meetings and stuff and didn’t let players get by w/crap. When Krags came in he wasn’t strict and players took advantage of it, which is why they were terrible. Hire him, he will win, isn’t that what we all want anyway???

Matt your last sentence should read, “I want both teams to win titles, even though I truly believe the football program will always be mediocre at best and say it publicly all the time.” Petrino winning at UK would make all your “excuses” for UK football not winning go away. You could have the nicest facilities in the world and still get drubbed by SEC schools with better coaches. Petrino will at least get UK up to the same level as other programs. Guarentee you Vandy would not beat us 40-0 under Petrino.

I wouldn’t be real surprised to see Cal just sit back and let our kids play against Maryland, win or lose. Folks, this game might end up looking a lot like the early season game against UConn in the 2011 season. We might take an L, and it might not look real pretty. But you can guarantee that Cal will use this as a valuable learning experience, and by late February this team will be getting it together and clicking on all cylinders. Maybe they will prove me wrong tomorrow night – I hope they do. But I am preparing myself for them to not look very good against a pretty decent Maryland team.
#38, at this point in the season, Maryland may very well have a better and more cohesive team. But not to worry – by midseason the Cats will be coming together and passing the likes of Maryland, and by late season, they will be living up to those lofty pre-season rankings. There will be bumps in the road in between, but don’t worry. Much like Zenyatta used to start slowly from the gates and win the race going away in spectacular come-from-behind fashion, so will be this year’s Cats.

Cal’s “baggage” was easily explained away (NCAA-related that didn’t implicate him directly) and everyone knew coming in (like him or not) that he was a master salesman and people person. Do I really need to explain the opposite situation with Petrino? Not only did he cause his own “character baggage” but he is certainly not endearing to those around him (players included). We can just agree to disagree and move on since it’s pretty clear you don’t understand the difference between the two and how they approach life.

Hiring Petrino would be a win-at-all-costs move akin to the Cal hire, but this would make me considerably more nervous. Petrino’s players have a history of off-the-field problems, he himself has been implicated in illicit activity, and UK Football isn’t the pinnacle that our basketball program is, so while I believe Cal is happy to sit atop the throne, Petrino would always have his eye on a bigger prize.

Kentucky needs a quick hire to get ahead of the game with other programs who will be hiring. That means Petrino, Tressell, Fulmer or a coordinator. Head coaches now in the game will have to wait until their seasons are over.

149 — Not true about Petrino and players having off-the-field problems. He is an incredible disciplinarian and his players are known to stay in line or else face his wrath. Please find me instances where his players have had off-the-field problems. Eric Crawford, the Louisville writer, has often discussed how tight of a ship that Petrino runs.

Ihear everyone on Petrino, the biggest problem UK admin has and alot of places will have is the hiring practice at a State school thing. At least it wasnt a formal charge or I dont think any State school could hire him. The moral and affair thing is probably not even close to as big a deal as the hiring situation, where he circumvented law.

Seems to me that Barnhart would rather hire someone he can be “friendly” with other than someone who can certainly get the job done. A good manager learns to deal with different personalities — especially those that are tremendous producers. Has anyone ever thought that Petrino’s ability as a coach is a result of him having a different personality? Someone on another thread mentioned that he thought Petrino could have a personality that falls somewhere on the autism spectrum. If that was the case, it would explain his uncanny ability as a child to exactly remember the interior of recruits’ houses and his ability as a coach to be able to X and O better than any. That would also explain his weird personality.

Look…there was a big fan calling to hire Cal when BillyG was hired…the consensus from the “supporters” was Cal was “dirty” he’d put us in probation…2 years of hell with BillyG and then we finally hire Cal. Look where we’ve gone.
Now, by no means is BobbyP close to a Cal equivilant…but the man can flat out coach. I personally like Sonny Dykes with a great defensive coordinator….BUT, put some strict boundaries in BobbyP’s contract and go for it….he is probably the ONLY coach out there that will turn it around in less than 3 years.
If you’re MB, you just have to keep the leash tight and VERY VERY short with him.

If we are going to take a big swing why not offer the HOUSE to Chris Peterson (Boise State). He may never come but make him the highest paid coach and put him in the SEC. Probably would turn it down but you never know if you don’t offer.

Good Lord when did Bobby Petrino become this beloved? I’ve read more love for him here the last 3 weeks than I have ever read about him anywhere. It’s like he’s Bear Bryant, Paterno and Spurrier all rolled into one with some of you. I frankly don’t know what to make of it but you folks love you some Bobby Petrino.
FWIW- I hope we do not pursue him. If it was just the crap he pulled in ATL, maybe but the record he has speaks for itself and I don’t mean Ws and Ls.

I have misgivings about Petrino but if that is who is hired as UK’s head football coach I will keep my fingers crossed and support him. There will have to be stipulations in his contract about his hiring practices. UK could not open itself up to lawsuits the way AK has. He is an offensive genius and would bring an exciting style of football to the Bluegrass. I do think his father saying he is interested in the UK job and that his dream was to coach in the SEC was more of a message to other schools than UK though.

Well, this might be a newsflash for some, but Joker was fired BECAUSE OF W’s AND L’s….and Joker is a great guy with an outstanding record off the field. But his work ON the field is what mattered for his job.
As soon as folks realize this is a BUSINESS just one step shy of the NFL, you’ll be better off. I fully get the reasons for wanting him and not wanting him…but he DOES WIN…and that is ultimately the main thing.
Do you guys remember him winning 11 games and 10 games at Arky with the guys they have this season? Bottom line, it’s a business, I want Sonny Dykes, but I realize BobbyP might be the ONLY coach who can come to UK football and truly win.
So, if we’re firing coaches for NOT winning with great off field lives, then you have to think the choice is someone that wins ON the field and overlook their off field bullshit.
Bottom line, Petrino will not go to another SEC school because of his past(if UK hires him), NFL doesn’t want him because of his past…IF UK hires him, he is going to be here a Long time.IMO…he’s burned the bridges and played that game, and I truly think the man will stick it out here. But UK will not be successful with a “traditional” style coach or scheme in football. the more I look at options, the more I keep going back to him…it’s a business, ALL ABOUT WINNING

It is obvious wins and losses are what determines success, not if you are fan friendly or not. BBN, do you want a great guy, or a great coach? Often times they are not one in the same. Cal is a clear exception of that rule but is anyone else having Cal’s success? No. Because not many people can pull off both parts of the job. Ask Joker. Bottem line, win and you will be loved, period. Lose and no matter how much you are loved, you will be fired. Go CATS!!! Petrino will make Towels the next Tim Couch and will be a cherished member of BBN if given a chance..

the thing that keeps resonating with me is how many were AGAINST Cal being hired because of his past and track record skirting issues with the NCAA…but we hired him and look where we are now.
If we so chose to go that route again, obviously BobbyP isn’t Cal, but I think the dilegence from Barnhartt and being very frank and forthcoming about expectations of conduct with him could yield some extreme reward for the football team and the commonwealth. Obviously UK has to protect itself and BobbyP may say no to the stipulations…BUT…he’s a proven winner on the field.
President Clinton did some shady stuff afterhours, but he’s hailed as one of the best Presidents ever….

WHY wouldn’t Petrino’s agent simply contact the other schools and say “My guy is interested if you happen to need a coach”????????
