I read Deadspin’s College ShameDay every Monday, expecting to find Kentucky on the list of college football teams that embarrassed themselves. This week, your University of Kentucky Wildcats finally made an appearance, thanks to that 49-7 stomping in the rain down in Fayetteville.
Here’s what Deadspin had to say:
Arkansas 49, Kentucky 7: It’s kind of amazing we’ve gone this long without talking about Kentucky, the team so bad Nature couldn’t stand to watch anymore. The Wildcats got early dismissal against the Razorbacks with a third of the game left. What had they done with the previous two-thirds?
– Allowed Arkansas to rack up 161 rushing yards and 533 total yards, both near season highs
– Forced zero turnovers against an offense that had given the ball away at least two times in all of its previous games
– Secured the longest Kentucky losing streak since 2004
All without even needing to play the last 20 minutes, because if you’re going to fail, at least fail efficiently.
From 2005 to 2010, the Wildcats have won at least two conference games a season, and they’ll need to split their last four games against Georgia, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to keep that mostly sad pattern of achievement alive. Fortunately, they’re armed with a defense ranked next to last in the nation in third-down conversions and passing-completion allowed. (It’s possible that I don’t know what the word “fortunately” means because I’m a product of Florida’s public school system.)
Now let’s try to forget that game ever happened.

oh man… the team so bad Nature couldn’t stand to watch anymore

LEt’s try to forget this season ever happened…that Joker Phillips ever happened…that Mitch Barnhart ever happened. Only then can we get relief.

“It’s kind of amazing we’ve gone this long without talking about Kentucky”
How does this coaching staff have jobs?
How does Barney have a job?
UK can be both a basketball AND football school, I’ve gone to 30-40 home games in the last 10 years, it’s a great crowd…usually.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:10 pm
They forgot to mention how young UK is.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:11 pm
They left out all the injuries
October 15th, 2012 at 12:11 pm
The ball was wet
October 15th, 2012 at 12:12 pm
I wish some of you morons would get off Barnhart’s ass. If Mitch Barnhart never happened then we don’t have… Matthew Mitchell and a top 5 Women’s Team. John Calipari and the Top Men’s team. Didn’t have Rich Brooks and his 5 straight Bowls. So what’d you like idiot? You want Charlie Strong and Rick Pitino? Go ahead and cheer for them, they need it.
MITCH BARNHART IS THE BEST AD IN AMERICA, BAR NONE. It’s UK Football that’s always going to be horrible. Always been horrible. If Bill freakin Bilichek coached here we would still be in an Outback bowl if we’re lucky every few years.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:13 pm
How can you say UK can be a football school? We haven’t won a nationally significant game…ever. Essentially ever. We do not exist in football. Accept it.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:14 pm
4/5, most everyone leaves those 2 facts out.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:16 pm
we did not lose that game. we just ran out of time.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
Are there any Harbaugh brothers unemployed?
October 15th, 2012 at 12:20 pm
because they are PART of the game
everyone has young players and everyone has injuries
that’s why a coach is supposed to recruit
October 15th, 2012 at 12:22 pm
You can’t possibly watch our games and think “we need to recruit better”. Our problem is our guys have no idea what’s going on out there. Defensive players are running into each other.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:29 pm
Forgot the 300+ total offense allowed in the 1st quarter…in the interest of full disclosure.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:29 pm
what they need is a coach.
And recruiting is part of being a coach.
At least, I think I read that somewhere. Maybe I’m wrong and players recruit themselves.
I’ll ask Coach Cal.
If there is not a need for better recruiting, then why is there rarely a decent back up for any of UK’s decent players?
Recruiting is everything in College athletics.
Recruiting, player development, strength and conditioning, coaching, planning, training, proper bathroom etiquette, walking while chewing bubble gum…I pretty much think this team is missing everything.
I mentioned recruiting because it addressed the “youth” and “injury” excuses.

I don’t think Joker Phillips could teach someone how to lob a rock into a lake.
Joker could confuse water into thinking that it was no longer wet.
Joker couldn’t coach water to follow the course of a river and drop off of a waterfall.
And it was obvious from year one that he was in over his head.
Football Coaching as a profession makes no sense to me. We are expected to watch them drive a team into the dirt before we concede the obvious. If you don’t let a Coach completely fail at a program then “you’re not giving him a chance.”
Try that at a Fortune 500 Company.
Bill Gates would have your shit packed and security would be escorting your ass out the door.
But in Football, you get paid to fail. It’s amazing.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Everyone needs to direct their frustration toward Barnhart, Capiluto, and the Trustees. Until they feel the pressure nothing will happen. It’s useless to direct frustration toward Joker.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Beat Tennessee and Joker comes back.
October 15th, 2012 at 12:44 pm
#7 and also your stupid remark #8 If you are truly a fan of Barnfart he got Brooks(who did us a good job building program up from probation)out of retirement after others refused to come. He got the other guy in basketball all by himself AND then pressure came and he got CAL. UNTIL that similar pressure comes his way in football nothing will happen. ONLY with pressure and a strong suggestion on who to get will this mess continue!! It must be a coach that wants to come, not as a stepping stone but one who wants to live in Lexington and understands the FOOTBALL support that is here. He wants to coach a team ready made for offense and the challenge of the SEC. His name is MIKE LEACH!!!!!!!!!
October 15th, 2012 at 1:04 pm
Glad deadspin covered it. Maybe it will force the administration to take action.
October 15th, 2012 at 1:05 pm
Microwave society. Sheesh you have the worst team in America for a year and a half and everyone gets all riled up! Take your 3rd quarter forfeit and it like fans!
October 15th, 2012 at 1:07 pm
It doesn’t matter who or whats at fault. Barney goofed with billy Clyde and then corrected it with cal. He can do the same thing with joker and Petrino. Petrino turned two clubs that were very similar to Kentucky into top ten teams. That’s a very proven coach…why take a couple million dollar chance on anyone else that will likely turn out to be mediocre. It’s time Kentucky stopped guessing and hoping for an unproven coach to RISE!
October 15th, 2012 at 1:08 pm
I’d like to forget that Joker was hired as head coach. Barnhart does not know coaches.
October 15th, 2012 at 1:15 pm
Kentucky, the team so bad Nature couldn’t stand to watch anymore
October 15th, 2012 at 1:23 pm
I have a great idea, this is really mind warping complicated stuff, so everyone try to follow me and see if this crazy thinking outside the box idea makes any sense at all….but I think we should fire Joker and his staff, and hire a better replacement. What do you all think? Too far out there?
October 15th, 2012 at 1:25 pm
#22…what exactly about Arkansas is similar to Kentucky? Arkansas has decades of tradition dating back tothe old Southwest Conference–not to mention the recruiting hotbed of Texas within a 4 hour drive of Fayetteville. Equating the football tradition at Arkansas with Kentucky is a steaming pile of horse shit with a blue shade to it.

Dave in Bangkok, actually, with most fortune 500 companies, if you come in as CEO and screw everything up, fire half the work force, and send a bunch of jobs overseas, they will fire you and then give you a multi-billion dollar golden parachute when you leave.
October 15th, 2012 at 1:29 pm
#24, didn’t I send a tornado through downtown Atlanta during the SEC tournament during the train wreck that was the Billy Gillispie era?
October 15th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
#8 – look that date up – quite possibly the high water mark for UK football in the last 35 years. My, how far we have fallen!
October 15th, 2012 at 2:49 pm
#2 and 3 couldn’t be more correct. #7 amd #8 sound like the moron if he’s taking up for the Rev. Mitch. He’s the major problem and Joker is just the result of his poor leadership. Do I need to remind him that the Rev. Mitch isn’t a CM Newton or Bernie Shivley. If the 1977 and 1978 seasons were able to occur then why can’t we succeed today? Oh I forgot! The men’s basketball team won the national championship in ’78 and the football team went 10-1 and ended up 5th in the nation that includes going undefeated in the SEC. Told tell me we can’t succeed in both. I’m just one of the fans that’s seen every home game at Commonwealth except 10 and I can say this is the worse coaching job at UK since John Ray. Also #8 we know that the Rev.Mitch didn’t want Calipari and gave in to the big money supporters to get him.
October 15th, 2012 at 4:26 pm
30 – Chuck, unfortunately that 10-1 team was on probation. That always seems to follow the good teams we have every 10 years or so.
I’m surprised #7 didn’t bring up the Capital One Cup standings.
October 15th, 2012 at 8:42 pm
The Rev.Mitch could always do what they did with John Ray back in the early ’70′s. Ray won a total of 7 games in three years and they gave him a fourth year in which he won a total of 3 games. If the Rev. Mitch decides to keep his pal Joker maybe we’ll win 2 next year. Of course they could play in one of the horse pastures at Calumet Farm because they would need any seats for fans. And the Rev. Mitch could go back to Kansas City and sell bar-b-que,
