Kentucky to play on an aircraft carrier in 2013

by @ 3:13 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

According to Ziggy Zagoria, Kentucky is expected to join Texas, NC State and Missouri in the 2013 Carrier Classic on a boat like Leo. Florida State, Gonzaga, Wake Forest and Davidson are also expected to participate.

The 8-team event will be played on multiple military-themed locations, potentially including the USS Yorktown, the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, Texas and the USS Midway in San Diego, California. KSR has heard the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi is the most likely option for the Cats if they decide to participate.

Get your towels ready.

It’s about to go down.

UPDATE: Zagoria has now changed the report and says UK is “highly unlikely” to play. Oh well.

While I’m all for UK playing big games, this is just too gimmicky for my liking. College basketball is meant to be played in a gym/coliseum/arena, not on a football field or an aircraft carrier. What is next? They going to have a game in Yankee Stadium?

    Regardless, Go Cats

  2. Jake Griffie Says:

basketball is meant to be played anywhere there are goals and a court

  3. John Wall Says:

    Yea this is awesome!

  4. Can't swim Says:

I hope it doesn’t go down, that would be awful.

  5. Isaac in Long Beach Says:

    PLEASE be San Diego.

Saw his name was “that guy” and it made me think he was being sarcastic. But I don’t even think he realizes how ironic he was. The only thing that upsets me about this is that UNC and MSU beat us to this last year. We should be the ones breaking new ground in hoops.

  8. YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS ! Says:

    alternate unis !

  9. crpcatfan Says:

I live in Corpus Christi and a game here would be pretty good on the ship. Pretty scenery with the ship, bay, and harbor bridge in the background. Not bad nightlife. USS Lexington is a museum/memorial currently. Curious if this one will be available to the public because of that…

  10. DogFather Says:

Playing in Texas…sure would be nice to have some Texas guys on the team, huh? Coincidence? (Gotta give my boy, NJGreg props for pointing this out).

  11. Palmetto Cat Says:

Never say “it is about to go down ” when referring to a ship Drew.I hope there are at least 3 Texans on that team.

  12. Rockfield, KY Says:

    1. They do these games for the troops. They are pretty much the only people who can get tickets.

  13. Han Says:

Is this situation like the one with the super tournament where you can’t play someone from your conference? Because I see both us and Mizzou.

  14. Injury Says:

I love the idea but remember watching unc much st last year
The biggest issue was the moisture on court due to ocean and wind
Players where falling all over place

  15. jsp Says:

I heard they are playing on the moon in 2014.

  16. Kiss the rings Says:

I really hope Davidson appreciates this…

  17. stevie Says:

This is too much like imitating UNC

  18. mocha Says:

I live in San Diego, I hope your sources are wrong.

  19. Zag jumped the gun Says:

Well now is being said UK is highly unlikely to play in the event.

  20. that guy Says:

I’m all for doing something for the troops and appreciate everything they do for the country, but I hate thinking a game may be decided, even one so early in the year, because the wind was blowing in a bad direction in the second half or the court was slick or something of that nature. For an exhibition game I’m all for it. I just like watching games in actual structures made for playing basketball. Though I would take a game every year on an aircraft carrier if it meant the Final Four would move back to actual basketball arenas and not football domes.
