Remember our good friend Dan Dakich? The former Hoosier turned sportscaster made news today on his radio show by saying that he has heard from a “reliable source” that Trey Lyles, the 2014 recruit that decommitted from Indiana and is currently considering the Cats, took a visit to Kentucky before reopening the recruiting process. Dakich said that Lyles visited the school back in July during what is known as the “dead period,” in which no contact is allowed between coaches and players. Jeff Goodman tweeted that he had heard similar rumors about Lyles being on campus during the dead period, but was unable to confirm them.
Now, let’s be clear about what is a violation here. If Lyles visited campus during the dead period and had contact with the coaches, toured the basketball facilities, etc., or if the staff in any way facilitated his visit, that is a violation. However, if he and his family drove around campus by themselves, it is not.
Various media members have interviewed Tom Lyles, Trey’s father, who said that Dakich’s claims are 100% false and that Lyles’ only visit to campus happened last Saturday.

UPDATE: Adam Zagoria spoke to both Dakich and Tom Lyles about the situation. Dakich claims to have heard that Lyles visited Kentucky during the dead period from a “very good source”:
“And they told me July. Now, was it Aug. 1? I have no idea. They told me July. Nobody told me anybody met with coaches. Nobody told me any of that, just said they went to Kentucky in July.”
Tom Lyles, who calls Dakich’s accusations “ridiculous,” “retarded” and “dumb,” maintains that his son only visited campus on September 1st:
“It is ridiculous, it is flat out ridiculous that Dakich or anybody else out there would want to start up these untrue rumor simply because a kid decided that he wanted to be recruited, that he wanted to experience what it’s like to be recruited and now people are upset so they want to start spreading lies,” Tom Lyles told SNY.tv by phone.
“I don’t know where Dan is getting his information. I don’t know why Dan would want to put something like that out there.”

Again, this dude has no knowledge of the situation and likely heard something like this from an IU booster which I guess he qualifies at a “reliable source”. It doesn’t matter if he was on campus on dead period as long as he had no contact with the coaches, which at the time he was suppose to be on campus, none of the coaching staff was on campus.

IU has already moved on from Lyles for this very reason. They didn’t go to his open gym last week. It was just up the road from B-town. Why? Because they know this kid plain stinks of entitlement and pushing the rules. And his dad is not helping him. It is also rumored (from Dakich) that his dad asked for an asst coaching position, think that would ensure they were both in the IU fold. When you consider the crap about shoe contracts, etc it’s flatout laughable. Did he take a drive through UK and smell the tulips in July? Who knows. And you think Dakich (who loves IU) would intentionally crap in IU’s Wheaties if he knew/thought IU was even remotely still interested? I think not, BBN. I have to image the minute Lyles de-committed they took the stance that if he wants to come let him, but we’re done not grovelling. I think that stance is pretty admirable. No kid and his entourage is bigger than IU hoops.

HA! IU fans are so upset that this kid has moved on from IU. If this kid was such a terrible person, why are you on here talking about him. I’d like to thank people like Dan for killing any remaing chance that this kid attends IU. He might not even come to UK, but it’s fun to watch IU fans lose it.
Hey IU fans, want to know how you can tell when your program is back to the elite level? You lose a recruit and don’t cry about it for two months because you know your coach will just go out and get a different big name. See UK and UNC.
Do something even remotely important in basketball before you think your program is elite again. A last minute shot and a Sweet 16 appearance isn’t special.

#29 Yep. Who is crazy and entitled? Parents and a teenager who are trying to make the best decision for their sons future and hopefully put him in the best position for an NBA career, or the IU fans that get upset that they do such a thing and respond by alienating the entire family.
Regardless of him coming to UK or going elsewbere, now is the time you need to be extremely selfish. Come on IU fans, act like you’ve been here before.

I am a fall-down fool who is jealous of UK…My hapless Hoosiers haven’t been relevant for nearly 30 years. Now we have Dumba** Clappy the Clown for a coach instead of a proven winner like Cal so I have to make up crap to try and make UK look bad.
