So did you listen to Tubby Smith’s call in show tonight? No, well I didnt either. And to be honest, I am not sure why anyone would. I mean I love Tubby Smith, but he isnt exactly a transforming entertainer. Plus there is never anything relevant said on the show….Tubby gives his normal “coach speak”, the MC of the show speaks in a non-threatening manner, so as not to ruffle any feathers and the normal UK topics are addressed, with virtually nothing resolved or illuminated.
The only highlight of course is when they open up the phones. Because there is nothing more ridiculous than listening to UK callers ask questions of the coach. Whether it was the old-school, “when you gonna play RICHEEEEE?” questions or the new school, “dont you think that if you played Jared Carter at the 2, it would throw off the defenses”, all questions lead to absurdity. I often wonder if Tubby is just sitting there thinking, “what have I done to have to deserve to listen to this drivel?” (I think a Kentucky Sports Radio Tubby show would be much better…..call your local Congressman.)
But tonight had one big moment. Former UK star and recent blog subject, Chuck Hayes called into the show. In what was an odd, seemingly contrived setup, Hayes spoke of how much he loved the University and how Tubby had made him into a power forward for the NBA through work ethic and defensive coaching (could this have been for Patrick Patterson….nah). Tubby then spoke of his admiration for Hayes and all that he had done for the university and program, mentioning that if every player were like Chuck, coaching would be easy. All in all, it was actually a neat moment and was one that mixed up what is normally a mind-numbing endeavor. Word on the street is that this will be a new feature and that next week, Adam Chiles will be calling in…..so set your calendars now!!!!

If it is a ploy for PP then I think it’s great

All the stops are being pulled. This probably had a great deal of validity to it as well, the two are said to be VERY close.

adam chiles? didn’t he get kicked off the team and transfer? why would he call?
November 13th, 2006 at 11:07 pm
Chuck is the man!!! I wish he would give old Patrick a call!
November 13th, 2006 at 11:07 pm
Although I missed hearing it, I think it’s a great idea.

Ryan, Matt is allowed to joke in his blog. Chiles is not calling, but Dawg Carruth is rumored to be getting be getting the digits to the BBL.

#3 obviously missed the lesson on sarcasm in school. J/K. I think he was making a joke #3. Wish I could’ve heard it, It would have been great to hear Chuck.

Maybe Adam Chiles will call in to make a point of “what you don’t do” if you are lucky enough to get a UK ride. LOL. You know, just to show what happens when players take the exact opposite route that Hayes took.

It may have been contrived but then why did Tim Couch call in later? I think Chuck has a real love for UK and Tubby and since he is hurt basically talked about how much time he was out. If Patterson was listening he was impressed by Chuck for sure.

My favorite call-in occurs each time that I listen to the call-in show (fortunately for my sanity, not very often).
Host: “…We have Jack in Stanford. Jack, go ahead with your question for Coach Smith.”
Jack: “Yeah, coach. Great job so far this season. I just want to say that I’m a big fan of the show. I have two QUESTIONS and I’ll hang up and listen to your response. 1. I love our guard play so far this season. 2. Go Cats! Thanks for your time.”
If I live to be 1,000 years old, I don’t think I’ll ever understand the phenomenon of someone waiting on hold for that nugget of radio entertainment.
Callers, if any of you read this, please DON’T call in unless you have something valid to say.

you are a sick man, Matt. I have an extra prescription for brain fever pills if you need it. (the pills look like rabbit droppings, but don’t let that fool you, just eat them and be happy.)

okay… who took my log in name? Unless someone is doing this b/c of that previous blog…

#9 What did Tim Couch say when he called in later? Is Couch done
with the NFL or is he still trying for a comeback at some point?
November 13th, 2006 at 11:32 pm
Couch said he is rehabbing from the second shoulder surgery and that he isn’t giving up the NFL Yet.
Tubby kidded with him about wanting to play hoops while he was at UK!
Good to hear from two face men of UK sports.

Chuck is also a teammate of Lucas’s brother, you never know.
November 14th, 2006 at 12:24 am
Just once (and I know it’s out of character), I’d like to hear Tubby say something like, “We’ve been doing some math during practice, and after adding in some new figures for 07 and 08, we’re figuring we’re due 3-5 National Championships. Particularly after we removed some variables, namely D–E, and FL.”
Of course, it will never happen, but I think it would be hella funny to see OTS hint like that. It’s just the kind of humor stars sometimes like. Again, Tubby’s pretty much the opposite, as he knows you have to break the mentality of stars some when they come in so they’ll adjust to the team and work on fundamentals they didn’t need in high school.

Matt, I love ya bro. Dont want to get too off-topic. But how can you have so many opinions on today’s show if you didnt listen to it?
November 14th, 2006 at 12:52 am
Boy, I miss Chuck. I wish we had more players like him. He is a class individual. I’m am so glad that he is finally living his dream in the NBA– he deserves all the success he has achieved.
November 14th, 2006 at 1:54 am
Chuck calling in is awesome as he is a huge fan favorite and it’s nice to know he still keeps up with us. I would be shocked if this was in any way intended as an inducement for Patterson as that would simply be desperate on our part.
November 14th, 2006 at 8:39 am
Matt, you are so correct on the call in show! Glad too see I’m not the only one that feels that way.
November 14th, 2006 at 11:14 am
Not desperate at all; more like brilliant. I would be ecstatic to learn that UK set this up to make sure Patterson was listening. It is a NCAA violation for UK to ask Hayes to call Patterson directly, but there is no rule against lettng a recruit know that the coach’s show might be worth listening to. This is the kind of “sharp tactic” that UK’s rivals employ all the time with recruits. It’s about time UK started doing it too. And even if Patterson wasn’t listening live, he can be directed to the message boards and the UK Athletics website where he can listen to the tape.

Tune in next month, when Nate Knight calls in to let everyone know he hasn’t fallen off the face of the earth.
November 14th, 2006 at 2:46 pm
Matt, the reason the questions are so stupid is that they don’t let anyone with a tough question through. What are the chances I could actually get to ask Tubby, “Coach, while the overall numbers of your defense are pretty good, we’ve also seen countless guys have career nights from 3 by being wide open at the 3 point line, what are we going to do different to stop that from happening?” Or this one, “Coach, it seems every year we have a top seed we fall to a lower ranked opponent due in large part to our normally long scoring droughts in conjunction with not being able to stop the other team to make a rally, what are we doing to correct that?”
November 14th, 2006 at 7:42 pm
Chuch Hayes…….a classic! TomS, what a supersleuth. You have your finger on the pulse. Heavy hitters like that need to be on the show. And you can ask those questions if you slap down the BIG,BIG MONEY. That’ll grease the wheels. Yes siree bob.
November 14th, 2006 at 10:52 pm
UK had top seeds in 1993, 95, and 97 but fell to lower seeds each year.
November 15th, 2006 at 6:30 am
Yeah Tom, in ‘93 it was in the Final Four to a #3 seed Michigan (we were a #2), in ‘95 it was a Regional Final to a #4 seed North Carolina (we were a #2), and of course in ‘97 it was in the Championship game to Arizona.
Nice try in once again posting misleading stats as just those three years alone (2 FFs and a RF) represent more tournament success
by far than Tubby’s had since ‘98.
