Worst Game Ever

by @ 11:02 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

As we get ready for the Liberty Bowl (and I slowly talk myself into going), thoughts harken back to the one time Kentucky and ECU played in the past. Yes the Pirates came to Lexington back in 1993 that I remember as potentially the worst football game ever. The Cats won the battle 6-3, in the rain and muck and with two anemic offenses that set football back about 50 years. This ECU game has often been fodder for discussion between me and the biggest UK football fan I know (the great Duncan Cavanah) and is usually part of our discussion of all-time “you have to be a true UK football fan to have gone to this game” talks. We always nominate UK-ECU from 1993 as one of those truly hideous games of the past, but it isnt the only battle on the list. What other home games from the past 20 years or so would you place up there with the Pirates showdown? And will the Liberty Bowl this season break the 10 point total point barrier? It remains to be seen…..

From here in the belly of the beast, Raleigh-Durham, NC. 11:17am and Duke still sucks! 1st.

  2. sortleader2 Says:

UNC & ECU suck too. I wish UK Basketball was relevent outside of the Commonwealt again. Thanks BCG.

  3. Tom Seaver Says:

I was at the 1993 UK-ECU game and I would have to agree that it was the worst game I ever attended.

  4. sortleader2 Says:

Oops! Vanna, I would like to buy an H. I would like to solve the puzzle:

“I really wish UK Basketball was relevent outside of the Commonwealth. Thanks alot again BCG.”

There was a home game during Curry’s infamous 1-10 season that was terrible. I can’t remember the opponent but it was a Louisianna-Monroe/Lafayette/Tech type team that UK lost to. The worst part was the UK receiver tripping over his own feet and falling down short of the winning touchdown, at the 1-yard line, with nobody in front of him, and with time expiring.

  6. matt_af Says:

1996 game against Indiana was a poor excuse for a game, although we did pull out a field gaol in our 3-0 romp while I froze to the bleachers.

  7. The Fake Gimel Martinez Says:

Just about any game we play against Mississippi State seems to bring out the worst in both teams.

  8. soup Says:

Looks like Hamga is looking at South Carolina, Rutgers, and potentially one other school after dropping his visit to Ole Miss.

    That’ll be 10 bucks, plz.

  9. blue cincy Says:

    Indiana 0
    Kentucky 3

1996 I slept through this game and was there. I remember at halftime the Curry came out and read a bedtime story over the PA system in his monotone voice. Everyone fell asleep.

That fan in the picture looks like that guy from “Clerks”

  11. BIGBLUEDAVE Says:

I remember being at that game. I was 14, with my parents and it was nasty out. It was by far the worst football game ever.
    But, We got the W!

  12. Dusty Roads Says:

Worst game I have ever experienced with UK footbal is the loss to Ohio in 2004.

  13. CatFanInKnox Says:

#5 - I believe the game you’re referring to (and the one I was going to nominate) was the NE Louisiana (today they are Louisiana-Monroe) game from 1994. This is one of the worst games ever. UK’s loss marked NE La/ULM’s first victory over a 1-A opponent since rejoining 1-A football. As I recall it was about 35 degrees and raining as well. Worst. Game. Ever.

  14. truBLU Says:

Definitely the UK-IU game where we won 3-0 on a somewhat last second FG if my memory serves me correctly. One of the worst games I’ve ever seen and by far the worst that I’ve ever been to in person. Not to mention the nasty weather…but hey I was a kid so I didn’t care. Talk about sitting through 3 hours of shitty football in the freezing rain to win by a freakin FG haha. The FG might have been the longest play from scrimmage between both teams combined that day.

  15. truBLU Says:

But man did the crowd go nuts when we hit it…

  16. truBLU Says:

Over/under for total points in the Liberty Bowl….14 pts? I’ll take the under!

  17. scott14 Says:

Can’t remember the year, but the worst UK football game (not a home game) I remember attending was at Vandy, Pookie Jones was QB, Curry the coach, very cold day. UK lost by a baseball-type score. I sat in the midst of the Vandy student section being heckled the entire game by drunk nerds. The only positive is I was able to refrain from choking one of them and thus avoiding being escorted out, although in retrospect, perhaps being ejected early would have been a more desirable outcome.

  18. drewthunder1025 Says:

I have to agree with the 96 IU game 3-0 crappy weather. Really all the home games in 96 were pretty bad. Watching Couch run the option was awful. This years Vandy game is up there too.

  19. truBLU Says:

Ahhh I’ve got fond memories of re-enacting the ‘Pookie Option’ in the backyard….the good ole days.

  20. Steve Perry Says:

A few years ago when we lost at home to Ohio. Not Ohio St., but OHIO! I stayed for the entire game, and it was completely embarrassing. Worst game I’ve been to.

  21. E Cat Says:

I was at the game. Boy, the Curry years were bad. If you thought the O was bad this season, you should have seen Curry offenses. Marty Moore fell on a fumble late and it helped UK win the game. Now if he could have just done the same versus Clemson in the Peach Bowl …

  22. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

Ill be in D.C. for the game on Friday, I know its on ESPN, but are there any suggestions to where I can watch the game any surround myself with a few cats fans??

  23. El_Joe Says:

My pick would be the 1995 game against Cincinnati. Moe Williams ran for a bajillion yard (Actually 272, I think)
in front of the smallest crowd in the history of UK football in Commonwealth– 25,000 and some odd.

It was about 30 degrees with horrid winds, and occasional rain/sleet. The wind was so bad that
Brian Sivinski missed an extra point. Cincinnati had a punter who hit one punt that one that ended up going 2 yards.

33-14 Cats was the final, but it was a brutal, brutal day, only somewhat redeemed by Moe running over, around and
    through anyone in his path.

  24. goukcatsgo Says:

The worse ever was couch’s freshman year vs. IU. 3-0 Cats at night in the rain. It was MISERABLE!!! But the cats won.

  25. matt_af Says:

I agree with that. I actually got to sit in the front row for that one because most people left in the first half. That was one of the coldest experiences of my life.

  26. univky Says:

I was there and drove 7 hours one-way from NC to see that debacle….eeeccchhhhh

  27. DT in DC Says:

I was a stupid Sophomore at UK and sat through that game! I, too, bring that up as “you think YOU’RE a true UK Football fan? I sat through the ECU/UK game of ‘93!” Thank God for a flask with Jim Beam as I’m sure that’s the only thing that kept me in the stands that night.

  28. DT in DC Says:

#22. In DC, we go to Grevey’s in Falls Church, VA. Will you have a car? If so, it’s easy to get to. But you can’t take the Metro there. Several of the alumni will be there, as it’s our “home field” for UK games!

  29. Mark Says:

It was a little more than twenty yrs.ago. Maybe the last game I went to before joining the Air Force. Homecoming against Cincy, cold as Hell and a 13-13 tie. I think in ‘83.

  30. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

28.) I wont have a car, but we may just get a taxi over if that is possible, my guess is we will be out all day touring.
