Will a starter emerge in tomorrow’s scrimmage?

by @ 9:30 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

One of Kentucky’s four quarterbacks will have a chance to separate himself from the pack when UK football holds its first scrimmage tomorrow. Joker Phillips said after Friday’s practice that he hopes one guy can prove himself enough so he and his staff don’t have to drag the competition along through camp.

“In a perfect world, I’d like for it to be over with after tomorrow,” he said. “I’m not sure that will happen but I’d love to see a guy separate himself enough. The thing is, if you don’t separate yourself enough, that we feel comfortable with, we gotta go another week. But I would love to see one guy come out here and take charge, take control, and separate himself from the pack enough that we can say, ‘Hey this is our starter.’”

Unless Towles or Whitlow goes out and does something amazing tomorrow, it appears the battle for the starting quarterback job is between Max Smith and Morgan Newton, while the two freshmen compete for the No. 3 spot.

We’ll have a better idea of who will be under center against Louisville after tomorrow’s first of two preseason scrimmages.

Go Cats.

we’re 3 weeks from the season and still don’t have a damn qback? this year is going to be a cluster****

  2. Cats fan Says:

You know by game 2 Mitch will be on the phone with Minnesota asking if they’ll take another one off his hands. Don’t have a problem with hiring them, but we gotta be able to fire them when they ain’t getting the job done too.

#1, practice isn’t even a week old, you act as if the game is tomorrow, chill out. what good would it do to name a starter today and take away the incentive for the others to work hard and prove themselves if they know they can’t win the job?

  4. BPsycho Says:

#1 Newton takes the snaps and hands off to Smith who laterals it back to Newton who throws it to Smith who hands it off to a RB sometimes, and the WR’s just block for all the handing off and lateraling.

    #cluster****

  5. BPsycho Says:

#1 Do you think Marc Maggards as sexy as I do?

  6. Catlogic15 Says:

Newton will have three open and tuck and run. And wonder why he’s hurt. Smith is a pretender with even less confidence and raw skill. Joker will start one of them, with two bright youngsters to go with eager starters. Bad synergism out of the gate and Joker wants us all to buy into it. Amazing.

  7. UKBlue Says:

Joker is predictable which is part of the problem, he will name Newton.

  8. Catlogic15 Says:

#7….Exactly!!!! Joker dooms us out of the gate. Will carry through team on first stupid play. Crazy!!

  9. JayCee Says:

Every year. They just can’t help themselves from pumping false hope into this dog and pony show. And every year that false hope turns into a dog with teeth and hurt feelings. Does anyone really believe the attendance numbers would be down this much if the fan base didn’t feel constantly betrayed by the FB program? Lie after lie, excuse after excuse, fan bashing statement after… yet they continue to line up like the poor for bread crumbs.

Just like ole pappy said, some folks will never be smart enough to seek shelter from the rain.

The saddest part comes from watching those who are forced to stand in the rain and proclaim its wonder to all within earshot in exchange for employment.

is there any way for fans to watch the scrimage or will it be avalable on video for us to watch after? I would like to see some vids of the team and see how they are progressing

  12. Dane Brammage Says:

My house parent always said: Shed that wet shirt and put on a dry one before you catch cold.

I never could catch her though.

  13. Capt Says:

Towles please. He is good, and Fig Newton isn’t. And we dont want towles transferring.

  14. SEC Jon Says:

Smith and Newton are fighting it out. Newton is back.

  15. wikiwidcat Says:

Transferring? Wow no. 13, that is threatening and stupid. Anyone that wants to transfer can take the next cab out of Lexington. I hope you no nothing about Towles!

  16. ebell55 Says:

Start Newton. Smith back up. Whitlow wildcat package. Towels redshirt and takes over the next 4 years.

  17. lextc176@yahoo.com Says:

Newton will start, theres no question here. Why because although Smith likely gives us the best chance to win, Newton is his “boy”. Everyone around camous knows it, even though no one wants to talk about it

  18. Catlogic15 Says:

#17…….yep, you nailed the underlying issue. Sad for the fans. Newton can’t grasp the offense.

  19. JDH Says:

I would be shocked to see anyone but Newton under Center on Sept. 2. No. 16 is correct.

  20. Hal Mumme Says:

Unless Newton has greatly improved, it will be the same as before… strong arm with no touch on the ball. Give someone else a chance, we’ve seen what happens with Newton at QB. (See what happened when they gave the ball to Roark, final game of last year)

  21. WhyIsNewtonOnTheTeam Says:

Why is Newton even on the team. He is a good person but not a QB. He has even stated after surgery he is not the same which means he is worse then he was!

You are a complete fool. Newton was nagged all last season with injuries. The season before that he was benched by Joker and Hartline started. Newton showed some great things during his freshman year, like being a HUGE part of beating Auburn and Georgia.

Quit Hating on the Program. If you don’t like Kentucky Football then get out

  23. joe Says:

If The Fig is our starter it may even be worse than we originally thought. I will root for em and hope to be pleasantly surprised, but we are gonna be real bad this year I’m afraid. Newton is slow to read, slow when he runs, and takes 4 seconds to deliver a pass. The guy stinks, sorry to say but he is terrible.

  24. putinrichie Says:

Here is my 3-part plea to Joker regarding the QB situation:
1.) Do NOT burn Towles’s year of eligibility unless he wins the competition and plays 90% of the snaps this season. He should either be given a long leash and start or redshirt, period.
2.) Play whatever QB will beat Louisville. Like it or not, this is your year to WIN or hit the road. I don’t care who you start as long as you win. If you can beat Louisville and get to a bowl behind Newton, do it. If you can’t win games than hit the road.
3.) Let Whitlow play this season in a Wildcat/Backup capacity. He is the one QB of the four that is truly a dual-threat. I don’t think he is ever the starting QB here as I doubt he beats out Towles down the road, but it would be great to see what he can do in the Wildcat formation as a change of pace assuming Newton/Smith are not setting the world on fire. He sounds like a player though and I love his enthusiasm.

Hopefully Newton will come in and prove people wrong.
