Mystery coach says Kentucky is the leader for Jabari Parker

by @ 11:15 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

The man, the myth, the legend Larry Vaught posted a nugget of news this morning that is sure to perk your ears. Vaught cited a “college coach who has been involved with Parker’s recruiting” as saying that the Cats are the front runner for the talented small forward from Chicago:

“A college coach who has been involved with Parker’s recruiting — and gone against Calipari for players — already has an inkling about what school Parker will eventually pick. He thinks the pick will be Kentucky because the Cats are already the frontrunner. And he didn’t hesitate when predicting that Parker would pick Kentucky even though he could still also opt for a two-year mission trip before going to college.”

This goes against the views of several other analysts, who say Michigan State and Duke lead for Parker, the #1 player in the 2013 class. His current list includes Kentucky, Stanford, Michigan State, Kansas, Florida, Duke, BYU, DePaul, Georgetown and North Carolina. Parker recently said he wants to attend a college close to Chicago so his family could watch him more easily, but that he’ll ultimately go with the program that helps his game the most and best prepares him for the NBA.

Sounds familiar. Anyone have a guess as to who the mystery coach is?

    Clyde

  2. GoCats2 Says:

Well if the mystery coach said Kentucky, then we can rule out Bobby Knight.

  3. cory Says:

    #2…….. LMFAO! Absolutely hilarious!

  4. Tonydelksarms Says:

Duh…..it’s John Pelphery, he’s at fla, and it just fits

  5. RatfaceCoachKplayAD Says:

H T Hackney delivers to Vaught’s area…Bruce Pearl recently took truck driver position according to NJT so Pearl is source. Free A D !!!!

  6. Shmeloy Shmargas Says:

Vaught has been wrong so many times about recruiting that he can’t be relied upon for info. Remember when an Adreian Payne commitment was imminent?

  7. 44 Stitches Says:

I was told by a Mormon to go on mission before the age of 19 the person has to apply for it. They told me it was rare but granted in special circumstance’s. Parker I don’t think would be 19 until after his freshman year. I know mission’s are optional. If he goes on a mission good for him but if he goes to college which is what I would bet on he would look good playing for UK.

  8. Corey Nichols Says:

    Anyone else thinking Josh Pastner?

  9. Hookedoncats Says:

As a Mormon I appreciate that you guys are not bashing our religion. With the recent presidental elections people are coming out of the wood works for taking a shot at us. Thanks

  10. what the what Says:

Wait, you mean to tell me that Cal isn’t the ONLY coach who is recruiting one and dones? I could have sworn that it was proved Cal was the ONLY coach who would supported such a system…

  11. Will S Says:

Interesting tidbit, but as the article suggests, this 1 person’s opinion goes against about 10 other opinions I’ve seen that said he’s either Mich St. or Duke. I have a gut feeling for Duke in this one, but who knows what 17yr old kids are thinking.

  12. gossie21 Says:

    7. That is correct. And it is extremely rare that people go early. Typically high profile athletes choose not to go on missions. Steve Young, Jimmer Fredette, Bryce Harper, etc. There are very few return-missionaries that go on to have good professional careers.

I hope Vaught’s source is right.

  13. Lpool003 Says:

@11 Duke would go against what he says at the end of the article… Durham is nowhere near Chicago. My guess is this mystery coach was Bill Self, just a gut feeling.

  14. Jabari's4thWife Says:

Jabari better not be going on some 2 yr mission!

  15. theSkinny81 Says:

10…. yep, that sure is a long list of schools. Somebody remind Ol’ Roy!

  16. katmancsm Says:

#9 Thanks for chiming in about how nice it is that this Blog doesn’t always bash and trash. I wish the ones who repeatedly do it would get a life and respect everyone’s opinion whether they agree or not. Disagree and explain why, yes, bash and trash, no. It would go a long way in improving the image of the BBN and leave a lot less to hate.

  17. Marcus L. Owens Says:

Anybody with a brain knows he isnt going to Michigan St. When has Tom Izzo ever coached the #1 player in the country? When has Michigan St ever let players play their own game and create off the bounce? I will help you, NEVER. Tom Izzo is Tubby Smith, the only difference is Izzo has fertile recruiting soil in Michigan a state that produces tons of elite talent and hard working hungry players with talent and size. Playing one year under Izzo would not help Parker prepare for the NBA. Michigan State has no chance.

  18. Scotty B Says:

I think the coach is Tom Crean. It makes sense.

  19. gossie21 Says:

14′s comment is an example of why I think Parker will ultimately commit elsewhere.

  20. shields eyes Says:

Yeah because Kentucky has the inly fanbase that makes Mormon jokes.

  21. bj young Says:

It will come down to UK, Mich St & Depaul with UK being the obvious winner…

  22. shields eyes Says:

    only

  23. Rambo Says:

There is no mystery coach, all this is just sportwriters fodder!

  24. Jordan Says:

The 2013 class will be ridiculous. I think it’s already easy to predict a National Championship if the pieces fall into place.

    - James Young says UK is the leader for him.
    - Sources say Kentucky leads for Jabari Parker
    - Cats have been the perceived favorites for the Harrison twins for months.

How would that class NOT at least compete for a National Championship?

  25. SSI Lawyer Says:

I’m not trusting a Larry Vaught recruiting tidbit!! I just don’t think Parker comes to UK. Doesn’t feel like a fit to me. James Young has more upside and is a dream fit for Cal’s offense. I feel like they would be competing for time at the same position. On another note, Randle fills a bigger need for the program in the class of 2013. If Wiggins reclassifies to 2013 I would take him over either Randle or Parker but Parker would player better with Wiggins. Isn’t it great to be a member of BBN during the Cal era. Spoiled by the riches!!!!

  26. Josh Pastner Says:

Larry, I told you not to say anything.

  27. Beatle Bum Says:

    Orlando Antigua?

  28. gossie21 Says:

    20. Maybe not. But probably the only fanbase dumb enough to do it when we are recruiting the #1 player in the country who is LDS.

    25. I think Parker could play either forward spot in college. He reminds me of Carmello Anthony. I think he would complement Young. In my opinion Young and Wiggins would be more of a log-jam, but I’m sure we could figure out a way to make it work.

  29. Henry Says:

If he doesn’t choose kentucky I hope it’s Depaul so he can still beat Louisville

  30. BBN Says:

How many top 20 commitments does Calipari currently have for the 2013 class? Please remind everyone with dreams of a monster class.

  31. Joe Mormon Says:

I’m Mormon too. Jabari would send in his papers just previous to turning 19 or shortly after. He’d be serving then for two years AFTER his freshman year. That would be normal. And then he’d probably lose a lot of muscle, timing, some skill would be rusty, etc., over the two years, and need at least one year to regain what he lost, maybe two.

And as for bashing Mormon politicians, I do the most bashing. Harry Reid, Mittens Romney, virtually all those of national prominence, like Huntsman do NOT represent our doctrine politically. Our doctrine taught very plainly is totally centered on a strict adherence to the Constitution. Senator Mike Lee is the best, as far as prominent politicians go.

But Reid, Romney, Hatch, they all are traitors to their faith politically, and I’m embarrassed by them. Sure, they MIGHT be good family men, I don’t know them personally, but they’re compromisers on political principle. In short, they are deceived or have sold out, pure and simple.

Ron Paul is the shining beacon of light as pertains to a strict Constitutional philosophy that all Mormons who are awakened politically support vigorously.

Go Big Big Blue! Land Parker!

  32. ATB (Always True Blue) Says:

    9. We live in America, we have the right to believe whatever we like as far as religion goes. Doesn’t matter if I agree or disagree.
    25. and 28. I agree with your assessment on Parker and the position he would play. Secondly, Wiggins and Young only become an issue if Wiggins re-classifies. Third, could you imagine having Harrison, Young, Wiggins, Parker, and TBD center on the floor at the same time. Then you have the other Harrison coming off the bench. That would just be insane and would absolutely blow my mind.

  33. dakobarr Says:

    Bruce Pearl

  34. dakobarr Says:

    ahh, someone already said that.

… Coach K. Stirring public excitement to his advantage.

  35. Louisville Kentucky Mortgage Says:

Calipari owns Chicago HS talent. Kenny Payne and him have it on lock down for Chi-town recruits.

  36. Alamo_CatFan Says:

    30) How many top 20 commitments does anyone have? Ark, NC, and Fla – that’s it. Cal has a much better shot than ANY other team of having a monster class…and he will.

  37. Alamo_CatFan Says:

Strike that, Baylor has a shot at a monster class too. But still believe in Cal record of player development over Baylor’s gifts.

  38. Obvi Says:

    Obviously Lil Ricky…

  39. gossie21 Says:

    31. I’m a mormon too. And I have no idea what you mean by, “Our doctrine taught very plainly is totally centered on a strict adherence to the Constitution”. That is one of the most bizarre explanations of mormonism that I have ever heard. I do know some LDS that are “John Birch Society” nutjobs. But that is their personal political beliefs and not doctrine. At any rate, I thought your political rant was odd.

  40. Tmo Says:

    World Wide Wes

  41. Bradley Says:

    30. You are not very smart.

  42. Will S Says:

    24) That sure is a lot of “ifs” to say its easy to predict a national championship. None of those players are sure things until they sign on the dotted line.

  43. Will S Says:

Also, I haven’t seen “sources” saying UK leads for Jabari. I’ve seen about 10 sources say it’s between Mich St and Duke, with most having Duke in the lead. This is the first article, or opinion, that UK leads. Still too early to call.

  44. Jack Says:

    My guess is Self.

  45. Fred Says:

In a fit somewhere between paranoia and Alzheimer’s, it came from Bobby Knight.

  46. blitzedanddazed Says:

I would not believe anything Larry Vaught has to say. His source is probably Eddie Montgomery.

  47. Will Says:

I’m gonna say Huggie bear, Bob Huggins an old Cal friend and mentor.

  48. Notafanofmormons Says:

#9- I have known many mormons over the years. Only one guy I knew was a decent guy. The others were money-grubbing hypocrits. But, I don’t judge your religion by that. I do, however, take into onsideration that your “religion” was started by a convicted con man. Hard to give much credence to anything that comes from a confidence man, who was arrested for stealing from people everywhere he went. Yes, I know all about mormons. Know thine enemy, and all that.

  49. Dave Ball Says:

certainly could be the reason why Troy Williams is looking elsewhere

  50. JJ82 Says:

    Josh Pastner

  51. Deans4corners=scared2play Says:

Can’t be KU…He is not a ONE&DONE player! Oh and tell Lou Holtz this is B-BALL NOT F-BALL! Hope u pick soon JABARI! GO-DUKE!

  52. the dukie Says:

No way its Kentucky hes too smart to go to a school that violates every. NCAA sanction. Hes a Dukie for sure smar
And why not spend that 1 year before the mission playingfor a 4 timencaa champ and soon to be 2 time
Olympic Gold medal coach. This is desperation to try and get Kentucky more talked about. Have you seen Dukes. Targets next year to add with rodney hood , rasheed sulijmon and a veteran pg in quinn cook. Talk about a monster class this is going to be the championship “lock”ness monster class. F$#@ Kentucky and their coach who spends 250k on guys with ugly unibrows and uses a bottle of mousse on his hair everyday. bleed dukie forever the true Blue. Can’t wait to smash Kentucky again this year too to watch the lousy “fans” and ashley judd cry all that mascara down her trashy face… #dukegang

  53. john Says:

“Sources” yea no coach would admit to another school being a frontrunner in a recruit
Thats like saying I give up there’s no point in recruiting. If hes smart he’ll go to Duke. And I know he is.
Coach Cal doesnt develop players . He just uses them for personal gain. What Kentucky draftee truly has gotten better
At Kentucky. Not one. Coach K is a developer and will get the most of them. I mean John Wall won’t hit that next level, nor demarcus cousins, or any other soon to be Kentucky player. I mean take kyrie for instance ROY he succeeded so much at Duke in 1 year. Some recruiting style coachs are not good coaches period. Example Roy Williams and coach. Cal….
come on Parker Durham has got to be the best Choice don’t get suckered in to others alternate motives at Kentucky

    Lets go Duke

  54. Mitch Says:

    Haha @53. Duke Blows

  55. meanbirdie Says:

    Just remember the shot!!!!!!

  56. Jason Says:

Everyone seems to forget he is a devout Mormon, he and his parents already said that will play a major role in the school he chooses. That being said not a chance he goes to Kentucky a school and state filled with a bunch of backwoods redneck heathens. Look for him to end up at a private school that has a religious background.

  57. The dark knight Says:

    52. It’s you trolls that ruin the Internet. Your just mad cuz it’s been all downhill since 92, at least UNC fans have some class, I home MacAdoo ruins u guys this year. 53. Does it matter if they are good in the nba, if they want to get high draft pick, they will come to Kentucky. He won’t go to MSU because no national attention. Plus whoelse from duke has been that good in nba. Luckily beal now gives wall talent. Plus Lehigh beat Duke

  58. Dave in Phnom Penh Says:

I’m a non-practicing Mormon. Baptised in Seoul, Korea way back in 1992.

I make Mormon jokes. Why? Because they’re funny. Mormons do some strange things. Pretty much everyone does strange things. If we can’t laugh at ourselves, we’ve got problems.

  59. Dave in Phnom Penh Says:

Parker probably ends up at BYU or Utah. If he’s as talented as they say, he may be the beginning of a revival of one of those programs.

  60. corbin Says:

    57.
Two national titles since 92 is downhill? And it would’ve been a third if kyrie hadn’t of gone down. No, I think duke basketball is cruising along just fine. Top ten recruiting classes each year, an insanely loyal fanbase, multiple thirty win seasons.

Duke is fine. Worry about your own school and we can worry about ours troll.

  61. mike lang Says:

JABARI IS THE BEST PLAYER TO COME OUT OF CHICAGO.I BELIEVE THAT HE SHOULD PICK A SCHOOL THAT MAKES HIM HAPPY.DEPAUL IS CLOSE TO HIM;MSU INVITED TO THEIR CAMPUS HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR;SANFORD IS A SOLID PROGRAM.BYU IS MORMON SCHOOL.DUKE HAS COACH K JABARI RESPECT COACH K.UK SEND TONS OF PLAYERS TO THE NBA.UNC WILL PUT THE BALL IN HIS HAND RIGHT AWAY THAT WILL PREPARE FOR HIM THE LEAGUE.FLORIDA ;GEORGETOWN ARE IN THE MIX FOR HIS SERVICES.BUTTOM GO WHERE YOU THINK YOU WILL MAKE A IMPACT IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE COURT.
