Remember Jarnell Stokes? How could you not…for most of last season, Jimmy Dykes couldn’t shut up about how he’s learned how to stretch. Well, Stokes, who chose Tennessee over Kentucky and others, put together a decent little half-season in Knoxville, and may be the most exciting thing to happen to Volunteer basketball since Bruce Pearl’s last barbeque. Let’s face it: SEC basketball was more fun when Bruce wore that orange blazer, and although Cuonzo Martin seems like a very nice person, I can’t muster the same kind of “love to hate” for him that I did his predecessor. So, in the grand tradition of Tony Harris, Ron Slay, and Scotty Hopson before him, Jarnell has taken it upon himself to stoke* the Kentucky/Tennessee rivalry with these remarks to Brendan F. Quinn, the UT basketball beat writer:
“We can beat any team. Just making the tournament isn’t enough this year. It’s definitely different this year. We plan on winning in Rupp Arena.“
Stokes’ confidence is nothing new (maybe that comes along with having a size 20 foot). Back in February, he made similar remarks after the Vols lost to the Cats in Rupp Arena:
“It definitely made me more hungry. I definitely wanted to win. If anything, I want to win at Rupp Arena. I plan on winning, before I leave, at Rupp Arena. I’m saying that on the record right now. It made me more hungry and made me dislike Kentucky more.”
Oh, it’s fun having a villain again. See you in January, Jarnell.
* I will not apologize for this pun.

I forgot for a moment that I attended UT, we suck..sorry for the confusion
July 10th, 2012 at 1:39 pm
Pssst….Jarnell, the only way you could win at Rupp Arena is to have played for the Cats. BTW…orange does not look good on you.

Personal guarantees haven’t really worked to well for opposing players in the past. Also, he needs to focus on learning how to stretch before making a statement like that.
July 10th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
We can say whatever; this kid is going to be good, and I wished we had him.
July 10th, 2012 at 1:44 pm
Did you know Jarnell Stokes had never even seen a basketball until last season?
July 10th, 2012 at 1:44 pm
I hope they are good so there will at least be some excitement in a sec game.
July 10th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Instead of Kentucky just killing everyone
July 10th, 2012 at 1:48 pm
Plus all the home games suck this year except a few and they raise ticket prices? Would like to see duke or Kansas at rupp this year. Or Indian would have been a good home game this year
July 10th, 2012 at 1:53 pm
So it seems to me that his goal is to beat Kentucky, not go far in the NCAA Tournament
July 10th, 2012 at 1:53 pm
I didnt realize how hot Tyler was until the changed the pics at the top. SWEET
July 10th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
This dude is awesome! I can’t wait to send him home with another loss! He couldnt jump over a phone book. He reminds me a Sully.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
Did you know that picture of him is actually the first time he ever stretched?
July 10th, 2012 at 2:04 pm
Just as soon as he learns to tie his shoes and stretch
July 10th, 2012 at 2:09 pm
wow, this is some amazing stretching going on.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:16 pm
Stokes will be a match up problem definitely for us, as Nerlens and Kyle need to gain more weight and muscle to effectively bang with him. The key will be the supporting cast, which we definitely have an advantage, comparing the cats to the orange people. The rivalry will continue, and it will be hard to beat them at UT. We definitely cannot let them leave Rupp without at loss, though.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:24 pm
Put Jarnell Stokes and Chane Behanan in the same room together and you’d have to shovel your way out…
July 10th, 2012 at 2:26 pm
This little boy is in for a big surprise when he tries to post up on men like Nerlens Noel and Willy Cauley-Stein.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
uh-oh- bad news for UK. He’s had atleast 500 days of practicing and stretching. Does not bode well.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:46 pm
Why do players always feel the need to say “on the record” or “for the record.” If you are talking to a reporter…you are already on the record.
July 10th, 2012 at 2:52 pm
@15, I think that AP will be guarding Stokes before Noel, Willie or Kyle.
July 10th, 2012 at 3:07 pm
#15
That’s all we heard before last season began..Davis and MKG will need to put on some muscle & weight so they can bang with the bigger front lines they’ll face. How did that work out?
With a national title…I believe..yuk,yuk !
July 10th, 2012 at 3:09 pm
Already left one haha comment. @15 we should not give so much credit to JS. What did he really do last year? He got some hype for UT when they were crap. They are the same team just like UoLOL and IU they are going to suffer the same end to their season they did last year…. None of those 3 teams will end their season on a WIN! Point Blank! Period
July 10th, 2012 at 3:10 pm
His comments just prove how important UK is to everyone we play. He’s obsessed with UK and not going to the tourney. I think he might’ve made the wrong choice on which school to attend. Hopefully our own beast from TN will embarass him this year. Poythress > Stokes.

Cal said Kanter would be eligible, too. Cal is going to keep saying this about Nerlens because once Noel is ruled ineligible, Cal can say, “I had no idea he had any issues when I recruited him. It’s not my fault that we are going to have a crappy year!”

July 10th, 2012 at 3:34 pm
24 Nice try and keep holding on to that hope. It will make it that much sweeter for us when your bubble bursts and the flat top leads us on the chase for 9. Needing to finish 2 classes is different than needing the NCAA to rule on amateur issues.
July 10th, 2012 at 3:36 pm
and we didn’t have a crappy year with Kanter. Unless you call Final Four a crappy year.
July 10th, 2012 at 3:41 pm
*without

Isn’t this story like 6 months old?? yet ANOTHER rehash of an old story, man WTF just stay home and watch Full House reruns or something instead of posting old news.
July 10th, 2012 at 4:02 pm
Look at him warming up in bad form. I mean he is the only kid in the photo with his head raised off the ground. I told you this kid does not even know how to warm up yet.
July 10th, 2012 at 4:41 pm
I wanted to read this story, but I noticed that Hubby’s picture was missing from the top. From now on I visit this site under protest.
July 10th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
24, Enes may have never been eligible, but it turned out okay for the team. FF year. Calm down. All that needless outrage is bad for your blood pressure.
July 10th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
his shoes arent the only thing that are size 20!! that 20 inch pork sword really gives my demon tunnel a workout!!
July 10th, 2012 at 4:58 pm
5. and 29. was an imposter!!
July 10th, 2012 at 5:26 pm
Sh@t in one hand and wish in the other and see which one fills up first Jarnell.
July 10th, 2012 at 8:38 pm
Because UF is now the only SEC team to play in Lexington every year Stokes will get only one more chance. To get two more chances he would have to redshirt plus not leave early for the NBA.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:00 am
His plan will not survive first contact with the enemy.
July 11th, 2012 at 3:59 pm
he’s just being a competitor
