As we mentioned earlier, the Dominican Republic National Team lost to Nigeria last night, ending their quest for the squad’s first Olympic berth. While most sports writers have applauded Cal’s work with the DR National Team thus far, one ESPN writer seized the opportunity to get in another jab on Twitter:
Congrats to Nigeria on making the Olympics. DR would have just had to vacate the win anyway.
— John Hollinger (@johnhollinger) July 9, 2012
Hollinger has been an NBA Insider for ESPN.com since 2005, and has authored a book on the league entitled “Pro Basketball Forecast.” He also developed the PER, or player efficiency rating, which is a a rating of a player’s per-minute productivity. Yet, despite his lofty resume, he couldn’t help but grovel in the gutter by taking a cheap shot at Cal, who has more than proved his worth as an elite coach over the past few years. Even better? Hollinger’s “joke” doesn’t even make sense. It’s just lazy rumor mongering that sadly, we may have come to expect from those associated with the Worldwide Leader.
Ladies and gentlemen, your hater of the day: John Hollinger.

July 9th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
Have you thought this may be a dig on the NCAA and not a dig on Cal? The joke makes more sense if its meant to be on the NCAA.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:26 pm
How do you know this wasn’t directed at the NCAA? And the joke does make sense.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:26 pm
9 – sorry lol, didn’t see you there
July 9th, 2012 at 12:27 pm
#9- If you are really that dumb, you need help. You really think that was more of a dig at the ncaa than Cal? Idiot.
As for this guy, what do 10 people follow him on twitter, his family and friends. That’s how this type of person makes a name for themselves – poke the bear that is UK and the BBN.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:31 pm
12- he actually has >100K followers
July 9th, 2012 at 12:34 pm
Can we just change the “hater of the day” to “Douche of the Day”…Rolls off the tongue & smells like vinegar & water…Much like John Hollinger.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:34 pm
His mom should have vacated him as a fetus brewing in her rancid uterus.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:39 pm
#7 got it right. Just another piss ant writer with nothing original to add.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Holy sh*t are you guys sensitive over the smallest things. Slow news day.
July 9th, 2012 at 12:56 pm
Who cares what Darby from Sons of Anarchy thinks about Cal?
July 9th, 2012 at 12:56 pm
So who is up for blowing up his Twitter?
July 9th, 2012 at 1:02 pm
This widely accepted opinion of Calipari (outside of BBN, of course) is the main reason why he will never be given the option to coach Team USA. Pretty much everyone outside of the state of Kentucky (especially people in Memphis TN and Massachusetts) think Calipari is a sleezeball used-car salesman. I don’t agree with those perceptions, but nevertheless it is how the country feels about Cal. Also the main reason why people didn’t want UK to win the national title.
July 9th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
funny how he got roasted immediately from BBN. Well done, gents.
July 9th, 2012 at 1:12 pm
#20 Speak for yourself hater. I think you need to get out of Loserville at little more.
July 9th, 2012 at 1:19 pm
20 You should change “Pretty much everyone outside the state of Kentucky” to “Pretty much every Louisville and Indiana fan, and some Memphis and UMass fans”. You still mad about #8, bro?
July 9th, 2012 at 1:22 pm
#9, Dr. Funke. While you are a respected analrapist (that’s a therapist and analyst), I would have to disagree with you.
July 9th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Everyone step back, take a deep breath, and maybe consider laughing a bit at the joke.
July 9th, 2012 at 1:53 pm
Who Cares….
….People just don’t like anything/anyone that is MORE successful than they are so they lash out at it. You know, like a child does.
Case in point:
Lebron, Celtics, Lakers, Patriots, Cal, Coach K, Duke, Tebow, Matt Jones, T. Thompson, Rick Pitino…..oh wait.
Who cares about this chump….
…Move on
July 9th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
The joke doesn’t bother me. We’ve all heard these jabs time and time again. What bothers me is that there is no basis for it. Absolutely none. He just said it, to say it. That’s like arguing with a UCLA fan about how UK is a better program. They always throw out, “well we’ve more championships with you.” Is that fact really relevant, considering their program has been irrelevant since 75, except for that one national title they won in 94-95. If you want respect, speak with respect. It’s not about Cal, it’s about those kids playing for the DR. Damn.
July 9th, 2012 at 2:00 pm
some people are so sensitive. John hollinger is one of the most respected nba insiders and usually breaks a lot of important stories that are nba related. I am as a die hard uk fan as there is but if you cant laugh at that joke then you really need to get a life and realize there are more important things than just uk basketball. It was a simple joke but it shows how dead ksr is on the summer that they have to even post this. This was also the same man that congratulated coach cal on twitter right after the cats won.
July 9th, 2012 at 2:17 pm
The joke was funny the first couple of hundred times it was done in reference to Cal.
July 9th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
25. Why? What’s funny about it?
July 9th, 2012 at 3:23 pm
Screw this guy…
July 9th, 2012 at 3:42 pm
Some Adrian Woj wanna be. ESPN continues their hate for all things Cats (Ex. in the opening credits of SportsCenter during the “champions” clip, they put Bradley Griner and Baylor instead of the Cats). Congrats, you received your 15 seconds for the day.
July 9th, 2012 at 5:26 pm
Duck that fouche bag.
July 9th, 2012 at 6:09 pm
Big blue nation, sometimes we need to allow people to have their own thoughts.Everyone is not in love with coach Cal,the man prior to this job had a checkered background.Thats not going to go away, even we the bbn didn’t want any parts of this guy before. So let’s stop looking through our blue colored glasses and be okay sometimes with critisism. You never know we might be on here one day posting about how coach Cal could do us like that! Karma is a bitch sometimes just saying.
And the crap that ksr puts out about other programs and coaches is not innocent either .
July 9th, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Screw that hater
July 9th, 2012 at 6:56 pm
HAHAHAH, CALIPARI GOT SCHOOLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
July 9th, 2012 at 7:42 pm
An ESPN writer without an original thought. How shocking.
July 9th, 2012 at 8:08 pm
Just another two bit hack taking a cheap shot trying to make himself relevant in any sense of the word. Who ever heard of this creep to begin with and now he shows why. What a jerk.
July 9th, 2012 at 10:58 pm
Haters doth hateth
July 9th, 2012 at 11:33 pm
Wow, #BBN is super sensitive these days. You must be able to laugh off these comments or you start to sound like little brother. Smh
July 9th, 2012 at 11:54 pm
Who cares? If there is ever another terroist attack on America, and we need to catch the guy behind it, I’m just gonna tell BBN that offending terroist made a joke about coach Cal. He will be had in no time.
July 10th, 2012 at 5:23 am
To all of BBN who cares, get over it. It comes with the territory of only losing 13 games in 3 seasons and two final fours and a NCAA title. I had more fun reading the comments than the story itself. Plus, it has to be expected since our Bb coach is John Cal. You people complaining are the same people I seem on the 140’s when Coach Cal was at Memphis bashing him, grow up. It was a joke. I live in Indiana, you think I don’t hear this everyday when I have my NCAA title shirt on? I just smile and walk away. Born and raised in Kentucky and will always be proud of it……..
