Notes from the SEC Teleconference

by @ 12:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Today, the SEC’s fourteen coaches took turns talking about their teams and the league during the summer teleconference. I sifted through the generalities and coachspeak to bring you these notes. To the bullet points!

– Calipari opened his segment with this assessment of his new team: “You won’t believe this, but we’re going to be really young. We’ll probably end up starting at least three freshmen again.”

– He again reiterated how “blown away” he’s been by Willie Cauley-Stein, and says he and Alex Poythress don’t understand how good they can be yet

– On Archie Goodwin: He’s a “slasher/scorer” that can play point guard or the 2 guard, a “vital” quality given the team’s youth and short bench

Alex Poythress is “a beast,” and will be “another wing that runs and can make plays and scores.”

– Willie Cauley-Stein has bulked up 15 pounds (from 215 to 230) since his official visit, and he expects him to be a guy who “blossoms and blossoms.”

– One of Cal’s funnier lines was about Kyle Wiltjer, who he said was “bouncier” than ever, but “still not shaving, but he does have hair under arms.”

– Transfer Julius Mays is on campus now.

– Cal welcomed Texas A&M and Missouri into the conference, and said that from here on out, he expects at least seven SEC teams in the NCAA tournament each year.

– I didn’t listen to many of the other coaches speak, but had to laugh at Kevin Stallings, who said “one of the disappointments” of the new SEC scheduling format is not getting two guaranteed games against Kentucky each season, but that after UK’s recent success and Vandy’s total team makeover, he “won’t miss it” too much. I swear, unless you have a platter of tacos, there is no pleasing that man.

  1. NBA league pass Says:

    classic Kevin Stallings. tool.

  2. pioneer Says:

Kevin “From the Office” should know by now that it doesnt matter how many times he gets to play UK. He had his best team in his career last season and could only manage a SUPER BOWL effort in the SEC championship game to go 1-2 last year vs Team Devestation Incorperated. He should ask to not play UK at all, and it would save him, Digger Phelps, and their pathetic fans the embarrassment!

  3. SexnNursinHomes Says:

    Thanks for the recap TT.

Stallings. The guy who likes to cuff his farts in his hands and smell’em. Then giggles when he knows they stink. Gross.

  4. SEC??? Says:

SEVEN TEAMS from the S-EZ??? Come on CAL . . Haven’t you learned by now that theSEC SUCKS in basketball??? Didnt you say LAST year that SIX teams would DEFINITY go and on.y 4 went ( and only 3 the year prior???). BBN can only drink so much of your KOOLAID,!! GEEEEEZ,

  5. problem is Says:

The problem with jagoffs like stallings is… they can say they want to play is 10 times a year – only win one of them and think they are hot sh!t. Those book worms at vandy will even be dumb enough to hold up signs about beating us last year – EVEN WITH UK WINNING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Kevin and the kids at vandy aren’t nearly as smart as they think they are.

  6. SexnNursinHomes Says:

4- UK 2012 champions from the SEC. Take a deep breath and let it sink in.

  7. Cal Says:

#4 – pipe down, yo. Who asked yer opinion?

  8. jetblue Says:

We like the koolaid, it comes with a national championship.

  9. MIDDAY Says:

@Mrs.Tyler – What does a platter of tacos look like? #ksrmailbag

  10. the Big Dog Says:

That’s probably more information than we ned about Witljer. His development will be critical to next year’s team. I have liked Willy wince first seeing video on his play in highschool. He can move. He may be the key to the 2013-14 team as far as the post is concerned. The 2013 class has good talent for the backcourt and the three and four but is not that deep in the post. Please play football!!

  11. eightisnotenough Says:

Bring UNC and DUKE to the SEC. Put the conference B-ball up a little and bring the football down to UK’s ranks.
