Today’s edition of “On This Day In KSR History” comes from June 8, 2006, when Tubby Smith was on the hot seat and the Kentucky Kernel had his back.

The Dynasty Defenders Strike Back

Well the big news in the UK basketball world recently has been the decision by the Kentucky Kernel (the student newspaper at UK that is best known for being not known at all) to deny the group organized by the anti-Tubby Dynasty Defenders’ web site from placing an advertisement in its newspaper denouncing Tubby and asking that he be fired. The newspaper said that this was a “business decision” but did not elaborate on how or why it made this determination.
This story raises a lot of interesting questions in my eyes, ranging from whether the decision to restrict an ad based on its message was a sound one for the newspaper to the decision by a group of fans to take out an advertisement that will have the ultimate effect of making the fanbase as a whole look bad. What most upsets me about this movement is that it makes the national media (who love to make rabid fans of a team look silly) focus on the fact that “Tubby is under fire” from the Kentucky fan base….and they use this story to promote that agenda. When in all actuality, this “movement” is really a coordinated effort by a group (likely less than 50) that puts all its energy into trying to bring a coach down that they dont like, for whatever reason.
I posted on here a while back that I legitimately believed that there was a chance that Tubby would be gone very soon, based on his own decision. If that happens, it is events like this that will be a spur to that decision. What these folks dont see is that the WORST thing that can be done to Kentucky’s national image is to be seen forcing out a successful and well-liked coach for reasons that are deemed to be unrelated to basketball performance. I think most objective viewers of Kentucky basketball believe Tubby to be a great coach and if he is forced out, the reputation of the school and our fan base suffers. If folks really wanted to “defend the dynasty,” they would realize this fact and take a step back and consider the consequences of their actions.

Well…thinking back i still hold that Tubby shoulda been gone ASAP. Watching him is like watching Pitino with the UL. Why do I say that? Like Pitino always starting Siva, who scores 8 points a game while shooting 20 shots a game & a bad turnover rate, is like Tubby always starting Saul Smith who we can agree that Saul was a player to be benched. Why on earth start a player who doesn’t develope? Siva is another Saul. Just saying.

Tubby set UK back 10 years. It has now been 14 years since the tub has been to the final four with another man’s players. The tub never had a lottery pick at Kentucky. He had the finest resources at his command but he still couldn’t be successful.

20 there is nothing racist about telling the truth. If you don’t think that race had anything to do with UK and tubby, you are either very naive or you really are ignorant. Race plays a huge role in all of our lives. There is nothing wrong when calling it out.

It has been 14 years since Tubby inherited a final four team. He hasn’t been able to go back since. I’m sick of hearing about him being a great coach, or even a good coach; he is neither. One final four with another man’s players and no one single lottery pick doesn’t make a good coach.

I remember those days. If you wanted Tubby gone you were a racist or not a real fan. DD saved this program. They started a fire that couldn’t be put out. They did what most everyone else was thinking. We had sunk so low under Tubby those last few years. Something needed to be done but most wouldn’t do anything because expectations had been lowered to the point that what Tubby was doing was acceptable. Sadly, we got put in a worse position with BCG but at least that didn’t last long. Now we’re back on top and we have DD to thank. Now, can we get them to do the same with football?

I live in Western KY and I have never heard anyone slander Tubby because of his skin tone. I get really pissed off by posters such as #20 who has the gall to call someone racist for stating facts. UK had a black HBC for 10 years and we are called racists. UNC and Duke have never had black HBC’s are they are oozing love and tolerance.

I’ve heard people in Kentucky refer to Tubby with Racial Slurs. There are a lot of racists in Kentucky. There are many more folks in Kentucky who aren’t racist.
Really, that’s beside the point. The most rabid racist in Kentucky would have put aside his bigotry and cheered Tubby on IF TUBBY WAS WINNING LIKE A KENTUCKY COACH SHOULD WIN.
Funny that UK fans weren’t racist for wanting to get rid of Gillispie after two years.

#30, Tubby wasn’t a great coach; In fact, he wasn’t even a good coach. He was a fat, lazy forker who did nothing but bring UK to insignificance. In his entire life he has one final four and that was handed to him. Don’t act stupid, please!!

This brings back some memories. I think the biggest irony is that DD was started by one of the biggest Tubby supporters there was. That person was me, I used to own Dynasty Defenders until 2010. Most folks thought DD was started by an anti Tubby faction, when the opposite was the case. DD was started so that all opinions could be heard without editing and banning, as the other mainstream sites were covering up anti Tubby sentiment and even editing and banning members for saying we needed a coaching change.They found a home at DD. I decided to make some shows to cover the back of the Professor who was a DD member and went on Alan Cutlers show and asked Tubby to step down. I made about 100 shows and sang crazy songs and generally just used the most pointed sarcasm I could muster after the show to back up the Professor. I made a few radio shows with the “Vandy Rant” and it summed it all up. The site has new ownership, but still the same vision…ironicly, “all the sites are the same as DD now in regards to its overall opinion of Smith at UK”. You cant read much different at any other site about Tubby from fans. DD just had the balls to say it first and to let it stand. I learned from the members there that I was wrong about Tubby, he never had it, never will. FIVE years at Minnesota and not ONE NCAA win….Case Closed
P.S. I think Matt has done a great job with his radio show and has given UK fans in Louisville a show to listen to and laugh at. I know he may not think much of me, but it is what it is. Nice job Matt….but you swang on the Tubby sac like Tarzan. Just be glad DD was right. Somebody had to say it first.

I am a member of DD and was one of the ones who was part of the campaign to get that tick ouut of Lexington. The only site that I didn’t end up getting banned at was DD, thanks Katman! But I myself argued many a times with the professor and other Tubby lovers trying to rip the veil of ineptitude from their eyes. Another poster Golfncat and myself used to go to war against the Tubby loving program destroyers on a nightly basis. I had been banned from every site but one under many different names. What’s funny is that I see vile stuff about Cal posted and it’s ok but if you said that Tubby needs to recruit this Durante kid instead of fishing your banned. Their was one poster called SeattleCat I believe it was that was a huge dangler.
Oh by the way I see nothing wrong with RR’s post another another commentor posted on here that he got from DD. I saw nothing racist at all in that just stating that Reggis hugs Tubbys sack.

Just because your team wins a championship in the first year doesn’t guarantee you a job for life….He never understood the enormity of the program and the need to constantly outwork the opposition….installing his son as the PG should have been a clue about his basketball acumen….
His performance at Minnesota or lack there of proves he isn’t a top tier coach as so many tried to maintain throughout his UK tenure….
The bottom line is those that defended him to the bitter end enabled him to get by with mediocre results at UK and allowed there support of one man to help bring down the “Crown Jewel”…
Thank the Lord that Tubby chose to run because we all know that barni and the UKAA weren’t going to get rid of him….

Maggot err Tommy, bad form there once again concerning rr, you are not and never were a Dynasty Defender, rr tells the truth in his own unique way.
I am proud to have been a part of the DD movement along with DMR, rr, bleedingblue, katman, kes, stevie and many others to remove a lazy lying coach that was not worthy of UK and was enabled by way too many to tarnish our great legacy for way too long. DD was called many things, but looking back, who was on the right side of the issue with undisputed facts about the sham that was Tubby Smith…hummmm?
In an opinion that is not popular at DD, I’m going to second what katman said about Matt Jones radio show, regardless on his motives and obvious Tub-dangling, it’s nice to have a UK dedicated sports talk show here whose high ratings rub the tard faithful raw in private places, and that is worth something to me having to live amongst them.
