I’ll Have Another will not have another

by @ 11:53 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

There goes any hope for the Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another will not run in this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, per trainer Doug O’Neil.  O’Neil broke the news of his horse’s foot injury on Dan Patrick’s radio show this morning, saying, “I’ve been on suicide watch.”

There aren’t many moments in sports that can be as heartbreaking as a horse going down, and it’s even worse to see it happen to one the week before it races for the record books.

  1. Ryan D Says:

The Belmont is his race to lose. It was noticable to me that the horse is not built for shorter races, but was able to overcome. I’ll have another may run away with this one, it’s the longest in the triple crown

  2. Billy Gillispie Says:

    He’s not tough enough

  3. Billy Gillispie Says:

    Walk it off

  4. Fat Ryan Lemond Says:

so what am I supposed to do about this Belmont Party i was hosting this weekend?

  5. Sean Says:

This sucks. Time to revamp the horse industry. Spread the races out further… something!!! The horses obviously can’t stand up to the stress. Such a shame, I’ll Have Another was built to win the Belmont. Damn :(

  6. KyColonel Says:

I’m not buying this explanation. O’Neill was banned from racing in California for 45 days after the Preakness for doping his horses and there has been suspicions about I’ll Have Another.

  7. Ryan D Says:

My previous post was before the news. Huge blow for the race. Bodemiester will prolly be the favorite now, but he won’t have enough in the tank pretty wide open race now.

  8. Supa Says:

    wow. very sad

  9. Bicycle Seat Sniffer Says:

7 – Kinda hard for Bodemeister to be the favorite when he’s not even in the field.

  10. Policy Says:

#6 is spot on. He’s afraid of his horse being tested before the race.

  11. 96cats98 Says:

6 – Don’t want to think it, but have to agree. Up until 11:00 the “horse” was tweeting like crazy to fans about how good he was doing and thanking everyone for wishing him luck, then all of the sudden the tweets stop and at 11:30 he scratches!?!?

  12. Al's IndiCats Says:

My thoughts exactly 6! This dirtbag needs to be banned from all tracks period!

  13. burger Says:

Quit the speculation ladies. Horses get hurt all the time.

  14. UK FAN in Louisville Says:

#1 did you read the post at all?!

  15. bsquared Says:

so when reached by the media i’ll have another declined comment because he is a horse and horses cant speak

  16. Dumbledore Says:

7 – How can your original post be before news of the scratch when the very post is about I’ll Have Another scratching due to his tendon injury?

  17. thegoosewasgolden Says:

    #14 & #16 – lol!

  18. BlueMark Says:

How many people think that the syndication/stud fee for a horse that might have won the Triple Crown could be higher than for a horse that lost the Belmont.

  19. Little Calendar Girl Says:

??? “it’s even worse to see it happen A WEEK before it races for the record books??” How about A DAY before he races for the records books??

  20. Hal Says:

    Something fishy going on here.

  21. believeblue Says:

    Dope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. MIDDAY Says:

TV ratings have never dropped faster. This is great news for the cable stations. Let’s Flip that House!

  23. dribble drive Says:

Ryan D needs to stop posting(1 and 7) about the I’ll Have Another and the Belmont. Stick to what you know which would be ???????????

  24. Tampa Amy Says:

Not ignoring the possibility that it could be about doping, but according to reports I read, I’ll Have Another was the final horse to go into the “security barn” on Wednesday, which is where they do the drug testing before the event. If he did go in there, that means the testing would have been completed already and you know that info would have leaked by now. I hope it is tendonitis, and that the owner/trainer really are doing what’s best for the horse. Now that scenario would really help the industry’s reputation.

  25. Big Blue Coming at You Says:

There will never be another triple crown winner. Horses just aren’t built for it anymore.

  26. Lol Says:

Well we were getting low on glue and dog food

  27. 44 Stitches Says:

When I just saw this I thought it was a cruel joke. I went to another site to confirm. This blows!

  28. Will S Says:

LOL you kentucky rednecks crack me up…. horse racing…. who really watches that “sport”?? You do realize that NO ONE outside of your state cares about a bunch of 5’2″ 100lb boys riding around on horses, right?

  29. HeshimuEvans'2ndGradeTeacher Says:

28 – No, I wasn’t aware of that. You do realize how sad and pathetic your life must be to come onto this site every single day to type that stuff? I’m on this site from time to time and I have a bad habit of feeling sorry for people. You my friend, have to be the worst. I’m sorry UNC will indeed suck next yr and UK will be near the top once again, and I’m really sorry your existence on this earth isn’t worth more to you or anybody else.

  30. Matt Says:

#28 – You do realize two of the three triple crown races aren’t even in the state of Ky, right?

  31. KyColonel Says:

28-Well, the trainer is from California (and Cali has the most horse racing tracks in the US) and the Belmont is a sellout in New York. So the rednecks in Cali and NY like it too I guess.

  32. Aaron Craft's Rosacea Says:

    Ryan D is my hero.

  33. Dumbledore Says:

28 – You’ve never been to Keeneland/Churchill/Belmont/Saratoga have you? Most everyone is pretty clean cut. Hell, horse racing is nicknamed ‘the sport of kings’.

I won’t argue if you want to call people at Pimlico rednecks, but that’s in MD.

  34. Dane Brammage Says:

Never been to the Preakness or Belmont. Of course, we all know Churchill Downs is awesome. Keeneland is just magical, blessed by God. I’ve been to Saratoga a few times; very cool place. Track is not as magical as Keeneland – but the town is cool. 33′s right; folks dress for Keeneland and Saratoga.
