Today’s UK Fans of the Day are on Bourbon Street, still celebrating the national title or patiently awaiting the arrival of Anthony Davis. It’s good to see the ‘All Cats Everything’ sticker I put up during the Final Four is still hanging in there.
— The Dominican Republic National Team is on campus training for the Olympics this week, which means 16-year-old Karl Towns is in Lexington to see what the University of Kentucky’s basketball facilities have to offer. Towns is ESPN’s No. 1 player in the 2015 class rankings and he’s only going to get better by playing with guys like Al Horford and Charlie Villanueva under Coach Cal this summer. It’s a win-win for Towns and Calipari, who is getting a head start on recruiting the 6’11” center, and Towns is already enjoying what he’s seeing. He tweeted to Nerlens Noel earlier today saying, “Place is nice I understand now why you picked this place lol.” He also tweeted, “lol man coach cal got me doing his own version of insanity man lolz.”
— 2013 power forward Jordan Mickey is also visiting Kentucky this afternoon. Scout.com’s sixth ranked power forward in the class is on UK’s campus today with his father after spending the weekend in Louisville. After seeing the Cards, Mickey’s father said, “Louisville will be a tough act to follow.” He’ll visit Ohio State later this week.
— Terrence Jones is in New Orleans today to work out with the New Orleans Hornets. Of course, the Hornets will take Anthony Davis with the first pick in the draft, but they’ll pick again at No. 10. Could the frontcourt from Kentucky’s title team be reunited in New Orleans? That would be a lot of fun to watch.
— ESPN 1530 in Cincinnati has a great story from a listener on Josh Harrellson treating a group of kids to some games at King’s Island:
“With all the prima donnas and athletes with their entourages, it was cool to see how down to earth and normal some of them (pro athletes) are.
Last Thursday I was a chaperone for my son’s 8th grade class at Kings Island. We were playing some of the games over by the Beast. I turned around and saw this huge man coming over to play next to where a couple of the boys were playing. It was Josh Harrelson from UK and the NY Knicks. He played a few games and was interacting with our boys. When our boys were out of money, he started paying for them to play so they could try to win a large prize. He told the boys that as long as they were having fun…so was he. We thanked him, got a few pictures, and went about the rest of our day. Later on, the kids ran into him again. He asked if they had won any more prizes. They told him that had not played any more because they didn’t have any more money. He promptly handed them a $20 bill and told them to go have some more fun. I just wanted to pass that along to show a more positive view of pro athletes.”
I wonder if he was wearing this shirt?

— On this morning’s radio show, Matt and Ryan predicted what the John Calipari Experience will include, plus a Kentucky edition of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Have a listen…

Everything that Jordan Mickey’s dad said, yeah. That campus has Purina dog chow smoke stacks on it. Hard to beat that? I guess so if your standards are a lower than a $2 gutter whore.

Is it just me or does this photo seem a little creepy. No girls and the guy holding the other on his shoulder has a firm grip on the other guy’s leg. Maybe they are all showing the size of their brown eyes with that hand signal.

That is awesome. At what point does a parent say, thank you but we cannot accept your money. Or at least refuse the first time so he doesn’t feel obligated. That is way cool of Jorts, though. Great Cat. Great Kentuckian!

Matt, you guys are wrong about Rondo. I think your problem there is that you are listening to others, who like yourselves, know precious little about the NBA, much less what goes on in the league at the team level. Rondo is not hated by his teammates, nor the Celtics organization. Quite to the contrary, he has been close to, worked closely with and has the respect of all those guys. That also includes Doc Rivers and the other C’s coaches, Danny Ainge and Wyc Grousbeck.
Furthermore, the Celtics are not trying to get rid of him because he is some pariah. There is not a year that goes by that every NBA team doesn’t take a look at their best trading prospects. They have to play what if and, given that the Big Three have been totally sewed up in their contracts, Rondo has been a big chip for them, just as Kendrick Perkins (who got traded) was. It’s just business in the NBA. It’s usually a hard adjustment for young players in the league. Fortunately for Rondo, he had three (and possibly five—if you count Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge) future NBA Hall of Famers to give him the layout and help him adjust.
My point is, I love KSR, but you guys don’t need to speak as if with great authority about situations like Rondo’s you know little or nothing about because you heard someone or ones expressing opinions with little or no more credible basis than your own. I’m no Rondo Homer. What I am is someone who has worked with Celtics organizations in recent years and know a fair amount about what goes on inside that operation and the league as a whole. From that, I know you folks are obviously misinformed as to how Rondo is perceived both within the company he works for, and the NBA in general. I invite you to give all of this consideration.
BTW, lay off of Kevin Garnett, because you have all of that wrong too.
