Cats Illustrated recently sat down with Coach Calipari to discuss a host of things, including the prospects of next year’s team. With Ryan Harrow penciled in as the starting point guard for next season, this will be the first time Calipari will have an experienced player at the helm of his team in a very long time. Calipari thinks Harrow brings a lot of things to the table for next season, like a better scoring mentality than Derrick Rose at this point in his career:
Cats Illustrated: Let’s talk a little about this year’s team. Ryan Harrow is a little different from some of the point guards you’ve had. And they’ve all been different, but he’s physically not as big as some of the other guys. How differently will he play?
Calipari: He’s physically not as tough. But he puts his head on the rim. He’s fast and quick and good with the ball. They’re all different. He shoots it better than everybody other than maybe Brandon (Knight). He has better scoring ability than even Derrick (Rose) coming in. Derrick didn’t want to score the ball. We had to make him. He doesn’t score like Tyreke (Evans), but that was Tyreke’s thing. He was going to shoot it.
Wow, those are pretty strong words. But if anyone knows his players, its Coach Cal. What do you think? Is Cal on to something or is this a scare tactic for teams that haven’t seen Harrow in about a year? Let us know.

It’s not really that shocking a comment. You’re talking about Harrow, who is three years removed from high school, versus Rose, who Cal is talking about as he came into Memphis straight from high school. Plus you’re talking about one facet of the game. I mean Rose was a good, but not amazing scorer in college. He averaged just under 15 a game.

Pretty exciting statement

I think next year’s team will be respectable from long range. You won’t have anyone shooting a Miller/Lamb percentage other than maybe Witljer….Harrow, Mays, Goodwin and Poythress will all be reliable shooters.

I didn’t think Teague was all that good…and he is 1st rounder….so I am not very good at judging point guards.
It will be a good thing to have an experienced PG next season….lot’s of new faces….Cal will get it done!!!

Hearing it is not a sure thing that Noel is eligible. Staff feels it is 60/40 he makes it.

I could take Derrick Rose to the hole right now!
(Maybe not in 3 months when he’s done with rehab.)

Its gonna be great, because he has already had a year in the system. He will be able to run the team from day one, and not have to make quite the adjustments the brand new guards had too. He will probably average about 15 a game slashing to the basket and getting quality looks while keeping within the game and having everyone else involved. He is going to be fun to watch, especially on the break. He will be great for the dribble drive.

Harrow isn’t our PG by chance or accident or because we couldn’t get anyone else. Harrow is the PG because Cal wanted him, its as simple as that really. And how can anyone possibly doubt Cal right now, he just won a NC after all.

Anyone that remembers Harrow in high school can readily understand Cal’s comments…..the kid is a baller…..

Within the next 8 months or so, I think I’ll be wanting a Harrow jersey!!

#13 – Cats Fan – Your right.
Harrow is the chosen one.
Not just Cal’s doing but Harrow’s as well. The Universe has brought us together.
Now is when Harrow plays it like Rondo did last night. Get to where your coach trusts you so much (because you prove you listen to him) that he lets you go unleashed.
Then we’ll see the first technically a “Junior” PG Cal’s coached in years take this team to the promise land.

Exactly. If Cal didn’t think he could lead the team or was a top notch PG…he wouldn’t be here…we would have someone else. Harrow will be great for us.

Hey guys. Cal felt that harrow was better than any other PG in this class! That is why he wanted him. Harrow to me was the best ball handler, and true PG in the 2010 class. Dont get me wrong their were better scoring PG’s, but not true PG’s. Everyone will be amazed what a year he will have. He is a better ball handler than any we have had a UK since cal has been there. As for noel, the staff is certain he will be eligible!
