[Moderated by Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson]

It’s never a good idea to joke about looking at someone’s wife before offering them a job. It’s especially not a good idea to say it on the radio. I can’t even imagine someone doing it if they coach a college football team. But Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin did it.
“I’ve been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I’ve seen his wife,” Franklin said during an on-air interview. “If she looks the part, and she’s a D-1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal.
Yup, he really did it.
Foot, meet mouth.
My foot doesn’t taste good, I hope I did not offend any1, I love & respect ALL,have a great day, enjoy the fam & don’t forget 2 #AnchorDown

Attempt at humor obviously fell a few yds short. Was speaking to the courage it takes 4 men 2 approach the women who become their wives!!!!!
— James Franklin (@jamesfranklinvu) May 31, 2012
If a man can convince the women of his dreams 2 marry him,he can probably do just about anything, that type of confidence along w/ coaching
— James Franklin (@jamesfranklinvu) May 31, 2012
I clearly used language that doesn’t reflect my views on women and I am SORRY!

OUR COUNTRY IS WAY TOO DAMN SENSITIVE
June 1st, 2012 at 5:16 pm
The media blows this stuff out of the water. They make it more than it actually is. The media starts shit hoping to get hits. If the media wasn’t around, sports would be so much better.
June 1st, 2012 at 5:33 pm
I would like to see some pictures of his assistants’ wives. I bet some of them are fat and/or ugly.
June 1st, 2012 at 5:35 pm

Mostly, it is a desert out there.
June 1st, 2012 at 5:44 pm
misogynist much?
Would this count as sexual harassment? As It creates a hostile work environment for spouses of the employees.
June 1st, 2012 at 5:49 pm
2.
Yeah, just think about it, if the media wasn’t around, you’d have to buy a ticket to see the game, and if you didn’t, the only way you would ever know the score is by word-of-mouth. Damned media, informing people is just WRONG!
June 1st, 2012 at 5:53 pm
This is why I can get any job I want!
June 1st, 2012 at 5:55 pm
Yawn
June 1st, 2012 at 5:56 pm
@6 The standard is whether it would create that environment in the eyes of a reasonable person in the allegedly harassed woman’s shoes. That’s…not the case.
June 1st, 2012 at 6:07 pm
Don’t piss Franklin off he might beat us worse this year.
June 1st, 2012 at 6:08 pm
4- haha. I’d love to be the panty checker on that team.
June 1st, 2012 at 6:14 pm
So you’re the same Drew Franklin on air with Matt Jones ? The Vandy coach jokes about recruits and you have a Politically Correct hissy fit ? Are you a fun guy with a quick wit or are you a rudderless major media sycophant/wannabe ? I thought the former but fear otherwise. I’m still onboard but c’mon, lose the fake umbrage.
June 1st, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Exactly, #1. You can’t fricking say anything these days without hurting someone’s feelings. I can seriously not think of anything that someone could say to me that would offend me. I like to make fun of myself before anyone else can. Everyone…lighten up!!
June 1st, 2012 at 6:29 pm
I guess UK doesn’t have to worry about Vandy trying to hire Joker as an assistant coach. LOL
June 1st, 2012 at 6:29 pm
Who knew that having a wife is necessary to be a football coach.
This is one of those memes that has no basis in reality and is spoken by people who want others to think they have some extra wisdom.
If there is any job where a man has to realize he’s not going to be available to be much of a family man, it’s a football coach at the D1 level.
It’s not for every woman.
Yet for a guy to suggest your hiring is determined primarily by your wife is not wise at all. It’s actually quite close minded and only produces 1 result… shrinking the available candidate list to guys that have hot wives.
His filter lets bad candidates in and good candidates out. Then again, at least he look at your wife if you bore him at dinner time. Was this guy born in 1920?
June 1st, 2012 at 6:46 pm
15: I don’t know about that. Do you or the real Mrs Joker go to the interview?
June 1st, 2012 at 6:50 pm
He makes a good point, and that’s an interesting take on whether a coach has the salesman ability to sell a recruit to the program, just like they sold a good looking woman on their self.
If you just read that line, it doesn’t make him look good. I’m sure the majority of people who got mad just saw the one-liner highlighted above.
Moving past all of that, can we say discrimination lawsuits….
June 1st, 2012 at 7:23 pm

June 1st, 2012 at 7:40 pm
6-16-18 You obviously missed the implied joke that if the prospective coach’s wife was a 6’7″ 325 lb D-lineman that runs a 4.43 40 yd and has eligibility left then by golly, welcome to the team coach. Any other interpretation is a reflection of your issues not his.
June 1st, 2012 at 7:40 pm
I’d have to hear him say it, seems like a harmless joke from just reading it. Unless of course, he was serious.
June 1st, 2012 at 7:48 pm
Get a grip — he was asked a question — sort of in fun — -he answered – actually has a good point — listen to the interview before making these judgements — too many people looking to have a complaint about something.
June 1st, 2012 at 8:03 pm
I think he’s got a good point on the confidence correlation. Why do people get so worked up about this stuff?
June 1st, 2012 at 9:39 pm
22 you obviously have a stick up your ass
June 1st, 2012 at 10:19 pm
My bitz (Vandy’s coach HO) says: he looks Scrotatious.
Lovely, like a Peter “GLANS” Head.

June 1st, 2012 at 11:02 pm
ah, So men can work and be talented and as their reward, they get women born with genetically good looks. You don’t see the issue with that? Men are real people that can achieve and we are dipshits hoping we were born pretty enough. Why can’t a talented driven intelligent man deserve an intelligent driven talented woman? The only comfort is that most of the actually intelligent men I’ve met seem above this bullshit. But anyone trying to say this makes sense is basically agreeing that a woman is above all valued for her looks alone and a man may work to improve his lot in life to gain attractive woman as a prize. Don’t say it’s in anyway equal, fair or right. PS those prizes age. So good luck with that.
June 1st, 2012 at 11:48 pm
Well, I’d rather be in Franklin’s shoes, having to apologize for saying something stupid to a fan base that is all in, versus our alleged “coach” who has completely destroyed our program and lost the entire fanbase…except that Messenger dips*it over on BBK…

#22 – Scoddee – You said, “Any other interpretation is a reflection of your issues not his.”
The problem with your defense of this guy is his 3rd tweet.
“If a man can convince the women of his dreams 2 marry him,he can probably do just about anything, that type of confidence along w/ coaching”
His attempt to cover his ass highlights that he’s not standing his ground with an implied joke.
In any event, representatives of educational institutions are responsible for their words and if you walk the tightrope of ambiguity, innuendo, or implied jokes then you should pay the price from the educated people around you.
At Louisville, this conduct would be celebrated. At Vandy, not so much.
June 2nd, 2012 at 10:50 am
#31 – burger – I was aware of his backing away in subsequent tweets. That’s just a testimonial to the power of the PC movement. Your gratuitous shot at Louisville however, is testimony to the educated people around you, of “your issues”.(see #22)
June 2nd, 2012 at 12:52 pm
It’s o.k., James, some people can still read in context and think in the abstract. The rest of you., well, LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS!
June 2nd, 2012 at 2:11 pm
#33 – Succinctly sublime. You nailed it.
