Confessions From the Undergrad

by @ 10:01 pm. Filed under John W.

As this blog has blossomed (that word always makes me think of Six) from a non-profiting, thrill seeking, brow beating, gossip spewing brand of UK athletics into a non-profiting, thrill seeking, brow beating, gossip spewing brand of UK athletics with a part-time ESPN gig, many are probably wondering when the Intern will get handed his walking papers. Won’t Matt now have access to “real” interns with bright eyes and even brighter futures? Yes, yes he will. However, only a nosy UK student with a mint of connections strewn throughout this obscenely spread-out campus can bring you the juice. Only a shamelessly nosy undergrad can feast in the campus watering holes in search of that ripe piece of…athlete gossip that Jerry Tipton can’t get with a tape recorder and an early bedtime. So until I slip up and say “gay” on live air, it looks like the Intern will still be brewing it up for the time being. So, without further ado, here are the goods:

Two different people have approached me about an apparent John Lucas, Sr. sighting at an on-campus eatery yesterday. Each source knows their hoops, and JL Sr. would not be difficult to ascertain on UK’s campus. He was flanked by Tubby and Hobbes, and the three were seen yucking it up and having a good conversation. Of course, since I did not see it with my own eyes, I cannot stamp it as fact, but, to quote a source, “if it wasn’t Mr. Lucas then it was a damn good look-a-like”…perhaps Sherman Helmsley?

John Lucas, movin’ on up

Ok, so that was about as juicy as a cold Gusher, but if in fact true, it’s an interesting development to say the least. You would think that the father of a recruit wouldn’t fly into town for a handshake, a burger, and bad news, right? Maybe I’m digging too deep, but hey, it’s a bone to gnaw on while we fretfully countdown to crunch time.

Now, if I were a bettin’ man…
Also, the early spread for the Cats/Dawgs showdown on Saturday has been set at
UGA -6 ½ . I try to make a habit of never bettin of Blue, but I’ve sat in the cold, pitiless bleachers of Commonwealth far too often to have confidence. But, those who know football far beyond my amateurish realm really think UK is a lock. My trusty confidante (aka Gerry DiNardo) was between the hedges for the UGA/Vandy game, and is adamant that UK will finally reel in the big one. Hope I’m wrong…and I’m still not taking your bait, Vegas!

Don’t worry, this won’t be a theme
A quick golf clap to the UK men’s soccer team. I know, soccer is only a sport in Europe, Mexico, and contemporary bourgeois America, but I appreciate the achievements of all the sports who wear a UK jersey. After finishing the regular season ranked 13th in the nation, the soccer team kicks off the C-USA tourney in Tulsa tomorrow. Yes, they play in the C-USA, don’t ask questions I can’t answer. I have several good buddies on the squad, and I hope they continue to keep UK in the national spotlight…well, the NCAA soccer spotlight, so I guess it’s more like a Mag-lite.

Get Yo Honky Butt outta my house,Mr. Bently! LOL>>>LOL

Man i hope what they saw,,was what they saw! That would be awsome news!

  2. wildcatadam6 Says:

    intersting indeed

  3. wildcatadam6 Says:

I don’t think you can read too far into this one. Why else would he be here, if indeed it was him on campus. You’re right, Matt. I don’t think he’d be here to deliver bad news. I don’t think he’d fly in just to have lunch. I think there is a bit more going on behind the scenes than we know. I haven’t called out the nay-sayers (mainly b/c I could be wrong), but I’ve said since months before BBM, that I felt VERY good about this class. I always have, still do, and will continue to. I think we get our guys, save Anderson. Just don’t think that one will work out.

PP, JL, MM, AJS, and MW. Not a #1 class, but certainly fills our needs. And if Ramon Harris joins us, all the better.

  4. MyDixieWrecked Says:

I heard that Mr. Lucas bought a horse farm in the area.

  5. JL Blue Says:

Spurrier has been spotted wearing Lucas’ shoes.

  6. Forrest4Three Says:

Well one would think it has to be postive.

  7. billy bob Says:

    yeeeeeee haaaaawwwww

  8. Drake Says:

I wish that it was Pat Patterson’s dad instead! Before we know it John Lucas will be on the bench! Which in my opinion, is not too bad of an idea! Look at what Arkansas football is doing!

  9. UKfan215 Says:

Him being here on campus, with our coaching staff, involved in a jovial conversation has to be considered a good thing. John Lucas, Sr being here at Madness while Jai visited has to be a positive. John Lucas, Sr joining the UK crowd in it’s chant for Patterson has to be viewed as a positive. The fact that John Lucas has become a friend of the Patterson family is a positive. And the fact that Jai seems to have lots of influence on other players such as Patterson, Anderson, Stewart, etc also seems very positive. I cannot think of one single thing about Jai or John Lucas that hasn’t been a positive for us this Fall in recruiting.

  10. Food in Lexington Says:

Okay obviously it is very good but it is also really weird, at least it is weird if Jai Lucas wasn’t also somewhere in Lexington hanging out with the guys. Now if Jai was doing an unoffical it is simply good news. But doesn’t anyone else hear Daddy Dearest here?

  11. blue2u Says:

Um, it’s Tuesday…Jai is in school.

  12. Food in Lexington Says:

    4. Is the horse farm thing real? Cause then he could be Tubby’s new best friend and great recruiting. But flying in from Houston just to talk about your son who isn’t there????

  13. Wyldkatzky Says:

The man used to play in the NBA and has a son in the NBA? the real question is why wouldn’t he fly out to kentucky just to have lunch with tubby =p Heck if I was uber rich and was friends with people on the basketball scene I’d be everywhere.

  14. Anonymous Says:

    Sounds interesting.

I have to doubt that Tubby would be willing to put a guy on the bench with him that many of our fans would prefer to see as our head coach though.

  15. 4UKtrey Says:

#14 There may be a Minority of fans. But the Majority would be skeptical about handing the reins over to Lucas Sr. I wouldnt feel comfortable about it I havent seen anything saying he was a Head Coach.

  16. Gerry DiNardo Says:

Thanks for the shoutout Intern, your bright eyes certainly cannot be replaced. My guess is Tubby took the elder Mr. Lucas to that specific eatery because of the abundance of freshman and sophomore coeds who habitually flock to the “healthy” alternative to UK Dining. Certainly a man of Lucas’s scouting ability knows prime talent when he sees it. But enough about good looking sorority girls. Let’s hope our “source” turns out to see clearer than he speaks and this all works out for the Cats.

  17. Mattcat73 Says:

That’s strange, I’m not sure what to make of it. I mean what could be said at a face to face meeting that couldn’t be said over a phone? What could Mr. Lucas possibly see on thursday, that he didn’t see the 13-15? A quick deduction suggests that Mr. Lucas may have had reasons other than chatting with Tubby Smith, to be in the area. Business? Shopping? I dunno, but I’m very curious.

  18. Katman Says:

    Tubby has a great idea….lets piss off Jasper (A 6-6 PG) to bring on a 5-6 PG…BRILLIANT.

  19. Tom Gray Says:

Jasper played 2 and 3 spots at NBA Players camp in 2005.

Katman never played any spot nor coached either.

  20. Tom Gray Says:

    In 2005, Hoopmasters said:

Derrick Jasper 6-6 WF Paso Robles, CA This explosive wing was one of the pleasant surprises we observed in Richmond. He is strong with the ball, explodes off the dribble to the hoop and finishes in traffic. He showed range to 17-feet off the dribble and did hit a three while we were evaluating his game. As jumper extends he will rise in our eyes.

    WING FORWARDS:

    1. Thaddeus Young 6-8 WF Memphis, TN Mitchell
    2. Quincy Pondexter 6-7 WF Fresno, CA San Joaquin Valley
    3. Gerald Henderson 6-5 WF Merion Station, PA Episcopal
    4. Lazar Hayward 6-6 WF Fitchburg, MA Notre Dame Prep
    5. Derrick Jasper 6-6 WF Paso Robles, CA

EBO/EA Sports’ has a wealth of talented prospects, two of them are 6-3 point guard Trevon Willis from Fresno, CA Washington Union and 6-5 Derrick Jaspers of Paso Robles, CA. They form a formidable backcourt that has led EBO/EA Sports to the finals.

Derrick Jasper 6-5 combo guard from EBO/EA Sports was a key ingredient in their offense and was a main reason that they won both the Adidas Super 64 and the Las Vegas Invitational Championship over FOH-Seattle the Main Event champion.

One of the best performances by a guard this summer was turned in by 6-5 Derrick Jasper from Paso Robles, CA who was a major reason the EBO/EA Sports won both the Showtime Nationals and the Adidas Super 64 this summer. He has excellent court vision and does a great job getting the rock to front court talent like Quincy Pondexter and the Lopez twins.

Derrick Jasper averaged 21 points, 7 boards, and seven assists for Paso Robles last winter (2005), but it waas his stellar play with EBO/EA Sports that has raised his stock to top fifty and rising status. He was the catalyst for EBO/EA Sports and led them to titles at the Adidas National Showtime and Adidas Super 64 tournaments in July!

“He’s a great guard who really brought our team together this summer,” Coach Matsubara told Hoopmasters. “He always gave it up to others, before looking for his own. We were thrilled when he was named MVP of the Super 64, he really deserved it.”

  21. Tom Gray Says:

And Lucas is 5-10 (not 5-6) PG who led his team to championships in summer camp and AAU play in 2006.

  22. wildcatadam6 Says:

    Katman, you’re a retard.

  23. Dynasty Defenders is a joke Says:

Now now, Tom, didn’t you know that Katman(Mark) was a professional bowler? I’m serious. Using DD logic-isn’t that an oxymoron(pun intended)-the Cats should wait until Jasper graduates to recruit a pg. Your hate is starting to shine through, Mark. Please return to your hole.

BTW, did you know that Dynasty Defenders is a joke?

  24. Mattcat73 Says:

Guys, please don’t let Katman bait you. His only purpose is to hijack the thread. Getting back to Lucas, one has to wonder what he was doing in Lexington yesterday. Hopefully, he was looking a real estate.

  25. Anonymous Says:

I could see Lucas coming in to inform Tubby that his son had decided to go elsewhere because he and Tubby seem to have a very good relationship and are good friends.

  26. Mattcat73 Says:

#25, I suppose that’s possible, but I don’t buy it. At this stage, I think John Lucas would be more concerned about his son’s future than Tubby Smith’s feelings.

  27. Food in Lexington Says:

18 I can’t see why Jasper would be unhappy about the team bringing in another point guard (Lucas may be good but he is no 5 star) He has to expect to compete for the position. The only issue that matters is this “package deal” thing. If Lucas comes to Kentucky and is treated (regarding playing time) like everyone else, then Jasper has no reason to complain. If Mayo was coming in nobody would be worrying about Jasper’s feelings. The problem is that the package. Bring in Lucas and you start. One recruiting expert interview even reported just that. And John Lucas’ extreme involvment creates a weird atmosphere.

  28. Crow Says:

Excellent work, Intern. We may have to move you up to “Gopher” as you fill the position of smart aleck steward on our little UK Love Boat nicely. Is Turkey Hunter a black bartender that provides timely advice to love lorn bar patrons by any chance?

If Lucas Sr. was on campus being escorted by Tubby and Hobbes, wouldn’t we expect more than 2 people to notice that?

  29. Bigpete Says:

28, Yes maybe more people did see it but of the people on campus only a handfull actually come to these sites and watch recruiting like we do. Would they know who it is? Wo would they report it to? Word is that he is loooking at an assistant position for next year not this year. Also seems, he, himself is trying to contact James Anderson to visit us. To me, if this is true, Jai has to be locked up IMO>

  30. Crow Says:

Buzz. There would be buzz on the campus if Lucas Sr. had been there and that buzz would be purring all over TCP like my good buddy Intern fawning over his Donny Osmond blow-up doll. Also, I assume UK has a campus newspaper. Do they pay attention to such things (Lucas Sr., not the blow-up doll)?

  31. Intern Says:

No, they are too preoccupied with Bobby Perry fluff pieces and butterflies.

  32. deplion Says:

Based solely on what I have seen so far, I think Jasper could be a very special PG. He only strikes me as a good SF.

I could be wrong obviously, but I would be nervous about Tubby moving him away from the position he is most valuable to us.

  33. Crow Says:

Interns talking about fluff pieces. Man this site has everything. Someday Matt is going to be sitting atop his media empire and he’ll remember this post. Then he’ll laugh and order a couple people killed.

Goldie Hawn and Edward Albert Jr. were great in “Butterflies are Free” though, so I wouldn’t come down to harshly on the seemingly indifferent campus newspaper, Intern.

  34. Crow Says:

    ^^ “too” (/imbecile)

  35. AMH Says:

Lucas will NOT play in front of Jasper when the time comes. How many times did
the masses get up in arms over the guard mismatches we faced defensively
with Sparks at the 2. Jasper gives you a true 6′6″ PG. He will also have to play his
hind quarters off to play in front of Mike Porter for the back up role. Tubby is clear
this season, that it’s part of restoring chemistry to have the players play in their
natural positions. I don’t see him backing off that position. We are set up potentially
to be stacked at every position sans the 2G spot after Joe leaves - Nasir will take care of
that problem to back up Meeks.

  36. Bigpete Says:

Lucas has become more than a recruit. He has become a tool and not just for this year. He brings a vibe that other kids like to play with and he brings a father that works with a ton of top recruits. Remember Vaugn was at his camp just before committing to BC. If Lucas decides on UK it gives us a great player, a possible great assistant/ recruiter and connections throughout Texas, arguably the biggest hotbed for recruits at this time. I was against getting him at first because of the PG clog but now I think it is a win win situation if he comes here.

  37. deplion Says:

I would love to see us land Lucas. I just don’t see us moving Jasper to accommodate him.

If he can beat him out for the PG position, then that is a different story altogether.

  38. Tom Gray Says:

Jasper plays 1, 2, and 3 spots. No moving necessary.

  39. Mattcat73 Says:

Well, it looks like it was just a rumor after all. Lucas was in Texas on Monday.

  40. Fred Says:

Not that most of you care about UK soccer, but the reason the men’s team plays in Conference USA is because the SEC doesn’t offer mens soccer, probably due to title IX. I think only UK and South Carolina have a Varsity Men’s Soccer team out of all of the SEC schools. However, Conference USA is a very respectable league as far as Men’s Soccer goes and the team does deserve reconition for their achievements this year. Go Big Blue!

  41. Richy Rich Says:

That piece on John Lucas- “John Lucas gives pep talk at Islanders luncheon” was written on:

    Oct 31, 2006 08:24 AM EST

Meaning that the luncheon probably occurred prior to Oct, 31, 2006. I have no idea, nor do I think
anything of this if John Lucas was at UK but just a possibility.

  42. Richy Rich Says:

Thanks for the info on the soccer Fred, I knew the intern trainer for a while and went to several
games…UK’s football team could learn from those guys. Its not a nice place out there on that feild

  43. Richy Rich Says:

Billy Bob you stupid Dookie, get out of here you don’t belong

  44. Mattcat73 Says:

#41 The article says Lucas spoke at the Luncheon on monday the 30th, the same day the Intern says Lucas was rumored to be in Lexington.
