SLAM Online Catches Up w/ Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

by @ 6:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Brendan Bowers of SLAMOnline.com spent some time catching up with former Kentucky Wildcat Michael Kidd-Gilchrist as he prepares for the 2012 NBA Draft. Kidd-Gilchrist has been projected as high as the #2 pick by some mock drafts. Bowers spoke with Kidd-Gilchrist in the midst of his second of three workouts in Cleveland for the day.

The picture painted by the article of Kidd-Gilchrist–humble, charming and down-to-earth, comes as no surprise to those of us who have been hearing such stories about him all year long.

As he peeled off his hooded sweatshirt, sitting down to tie his shoes, the 6-7 Kidd-Gilchrist pointed across the gym to the shortest player on the court. He couldn’t have been taller than 5-1, no older than 12. He was driving for a lay-up high off the right side of the glass as we continued to talk.

“See that little guy over there,” he asked me. “I want to know who he is. I haven’t met him yet. But I’m going to.”

The article also went into some detail about the types of workouts Kidd-Gilchrist has been doing in preparation for the NBA combine. SLAMOnline caught up with Michael’s conditioning coach, Jon Purtor, who had glowing remarks about MKG’s work ethic.

“We are working on a six-day per week plan with Michael,” Purtor told SLAMOnline. “Michael’s 100 percent into it too. He really has a great mindset; he’s very wise for his age. He acts like he’s 30, the way he approaches it. He comes in every day with that type of mindset too, which is really, really, rare for someone at his age to be able to demonstrate.”

Honestly, the entire article is worth a read, especially if you enjoy a little behind-the-scenes look at just how hard these players are working to achieve their dreams. To read the entire article, click here.

I loved the part of the article where the guy asks MKG about not being able to go and workout in high school gyms or out in public once he enters the NBA because he will be so famous and MKG says it was already like that in Kentucky.

And this is one of the unfortunate downsides to “one & done”. We don’t get to enjoy guys like MKG for very long. What a great guy. He will always be remembered well, but could have been an all time legend if his UK stay was longer. He deserves all the best.

  4. meg Says:

why does he want to know who that short little boy is?

  5. Ally Tucker Says:

Haha Meg I don’t know… But your question made me laugh.

For all the ones who say we don’t get to “know” the one and done players. I call bull $$it. Can’t think of any more liked cats then MKG. He is right there with PPat and Chuck Hayes.
