Although the Clippers eventually fell to the Spurs in Game 1 of last night’s Western Conference semifinals, former Kentucky guard Eric Bledsoe put on a show. By this point you’ve probably already heard about his 23 point performance that allowed the Clippers to stay in the contest with the Spurs. His play last night is starting to cause some serious buzz among the media. Malcom C. Brown of Sporting News is calling for Eric Bledsoe, normally a key contributor off the bench, to get the start in Game 2 of the series.
Chris Paul needs assistance, evident when he dribbles the ball for the majority of the shot clock leading to inexplicable jump shots from Blake Griffin. To whom can the Clips look?
Enter Eric Bledsoe. The X-factor of a struggling Clippers squad, Bledsoe erupted for 23 points in 27 minutes against the Spurs in Game 1. Bledsoe, John Wall’s former backup at Kentucky, is capable of putting up efforts like that nightly, if he gets the minutes. The problem is, he hasn’t been. Bledsoe is averaging just 15.5 minutes in the postseason.
Brown makes it clear in his article that he believes Bledsoe’s performance so far in the playoffs has earned him a starting role. He even claims that the series will likely end in a 4-0 sweep if the change isn’t made soon. Coming off of one of his best games as a pro, it will be interesting to see if the push for Bledsoe to crack the starting line up for the Clippers gains more steam.
In perhaps the most powerful line of the piece by Brown, he simply states about Bledsoe: “All he needs is an opportunity.”

For all the genious haters that have tried to belittle make fun of or tried to make themselves feel superior to Eric how do you feel now? This kid and his family were sleeping in a car of and on a few years ago. Their next meal was never a certainty. No regular trips to the Dr or Dentist. His physical talent is off the chart. His mental ability to run a team is proving to be very good.

Eric just needed the opportunity to shine and made the most of it. I don’t think anyone who watched him in 2010 doubted his abilities or potential. He’s a good kid and I’m thrilled to see him getting shit right

Eric Bledsoe is an awesome player who will only keep getting better. He may be the fastest and quickest guard in all of the league.

Couldnt be happier for Eric but fact remains he vastly underachieved his lone season at uk. He always seemed to be competing with wall rather than just playing hard and playing to his own strengths. Happy to see him playing with great effort and allowing the game come to him now. We never got a glimpse of that while he was in school. Best of luck Eric, you’ve definitely got a fan in me( despite your horrific elite 8 shooting performance where I distinctly remember you jacking 3 after 3 and hitting nothing but backboard).

2) I know. While he was the 2nd string PG, he started at shooting guard.
Is it that hard to look up? I had to hear it at least twice in that NBA game. In fact, I think Van Gundy said that Bledsoe didn’t start for his college team, and Kenyon Martin backed up Wall at KY. I just stared at my screen.

A couple NBA thoughts I had about the show yesterday:
1) It’s nice that Bledsoe did pretty well, but if the Clippers lose, it doesn’t exactly mean that a lineup change is necessary.
2) Matt was ranting yesterday about how boring the Spurs are to watch. Well, lots of people say that, and that’s a dead giveaway that someone hasn’t been watching the NBA closely this season. The Spurs have been arguably the best offensive team in the league, and this is one of their better teams.

Yet further proof that jones doesn’t understand basketball any further than a typical fan/superficial level. The spurs play so hard, so smart & so unselfishly that I can’t help but be glued to the screen when they are on tv. They play an unbelievably high quality of basketball.
