He played against Kentucky last year in the Final Four and was a key reason why the Cats ended up not moving to the title game. And now a year later, he could end up in Lexington. Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com reports today that UCONN’s Alex Oriakhi is meeting with John Calipari today to consider a potential transfer to Kentucky. Oriakhi has one year of eligibility remaining and due to the situation at UCONN, he will not have to sit out this upcoming season. UNC, Duke and others want him, and he is scheduled to talk with all of them in the coming days.

He would be a great get
April 5th, 2012 at 9:11 am
I thought that there was some sort of rule that if he were to come to the SEC, he would have to sit out the first year???
April 5th, 2012 at 9:11 am
I understand the excitement in focusing our attention on Shabazz and Nerlens, but it is being EXTREMELY understated on how huge it would be to have Oriakhi next year.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:13 am
…or maybe I was mistaken about the sitting out a year rule, but I did hear about some sort of rule…possibly even not being able to transfer at all???
April 5th, 2012 at 9:15 am
Must not be too confident with that certain flat top feller! Doesn’t matter.. We have the talent to win it again!
April 5th, 2012 at 9:16 am
He would be eligible because of Uconn’s post-season ban. 6.7 & 4.9 last year? How good is he?

What situation at UCONN?
April 5th, 2012 at 9:20 am
#2 your right Ive seen the same rule. Not sure if maybe there is a clause in the APR rule that trumps the SEC rule
April 5th, 2012 at 9:22 am
#4) When Oriahki first announced his decision to transfer, there was a reputable website (ESPN, SI, CBS Sports…I don’t recall which one) that said the SEC does not allow one-year transfers and, if UK wanted Oriakhi, they would have to request an exception to that rule. I have no idea if this is true or not, but I do recall reading that. IF it is true, it seems the NCAA is none-to-generous in granting UK exceptions.

Oriakhi and Noel are friends. Could be a good get if we want Noel. Imagine the 2 of them down low together!
April 5th, 2012 at 9:24 am
Would Noel and Oriakhi play together? Is this a one or the other scenario?
April 5th, 2012 at 9:24 am
I did a google search regarding this one year transfer rule and this article references it too…

If he transfers to an SEC school and majors in something that is not offered at UConn, then he doesn’t have to sit out. UK can ask for a waiver. So find a major that UK offers and UConn doesn’t…

@7, From what I understand, the reason for the slump was due to his relationship with Calhoun. Calhoun basically told him that he didnt care if he’d been there for 2 years, the next Amare (Drummond) is coming in and will start. Also remember, numbers arent everything. Look at Wiltjer this year, or Orton 2 years ago. Both those guys would be double doubles on any other team in the country. Oriakhi is like a poor mans Patrick Patterson. Most likely he would come off the bench again for us, BUT it would be like Darius miller’s role where he averages starting minutes. He would be great in the development of willie cauley as well.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:28 am
Agree with #15)…Oriakhi’s numbers are not a true reflection of his abilities. Given minutes, he will be, at a minimum, a true physical presence and rebounding machine.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:32 am
12-Noel and Oriakhi both went to Tilton High School
April 5th, 2012 at 9:33 am
SEC Bylaw 14.1.15
“A student-athlete who, upon enrollment at the certifying institution, has less than two years of eligibility remaining, is not eligible for financial aid, practice or competition at the member institution. A member institution may request a waiver from the Conference office for a student-athlete transferring from an institution discontinuing a sport, or for a student-athlete transferring for the purpose of enrolling in an academic program not offered at the institution from which he or she is transferring.”

I tried the NCAA vault looking for the Replay of Championship. Anyone have any other ideas where to stream a replay of the game??
April 5th, 2012 at 9:34 am
would be a solid pick up especially with experience, what is his size now?
April 5th, 2012 at 9:35 am
PLUS, I dont know why Cal would care to talk with him if he was planning on being with the Knicks next year
April 5th, 2012 at 9:35 am
Or could this meeting be taking place because Cal not as comfortable or secure in landing Noel after all the recent rumors to G-town.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:35 am
I heard that Oriakhi was very interested in Equestrian Sciences with a minor in tobacco husbandry. Sounds like a perect fit.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:41 am
23. LOL that is great….you know he could go along way after basketball with his minor in tobacco husbandry
April 5th, 2012 at 9:42 am
#23: He could major in “Winning a National Championship” with a minor of “NBA Preparation”
April 5th, 2012 at 9:43 am
So many people on this board are so behind. I he majors in an area of study that is not offered at UCONN he can transfer to an SEC school and bypass the one year rule. He does not have to sit out because of the post season ban on UCONN. Noel and him are friends from the same high school oriakhi will play the 4 and step out on the baseline and develope his game like Patterson.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:46 am
#25) That is pure genius!
April 5th, 2012 at 9:50 am
26- How are you going to say people on this board are far behind? Everything you said has already been said above you…
April 5th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Or he could go to UofL in major in fingerpainting with a minor in stick-figure drawing.
Okay, that was unnecessary. I agree.
Either way, he’d be a great get for next season.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:52 am
29. not at all out of line, I was thinking more about majoring in how to be spanked constantly by your big brother and minor in delusional thinking
April 5th, 2012 at 9:53 am
If he goes to Louisville he’ll major in “Old English” and minor in “Throwing dem L’s up”
April 5th, 2012 at 9:57 am
If he meets him, he will come.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:00 am
sounds more and more like the buzz about Bazz is accurate. Howland is probably going to get quite a haul out at UCLA. I’ve been concerened that we haven’t been seeing tweets from Bazz about UK lately.
He probably wants to stay close to home and LA is a HUGE media market. If UCLA gets all these players, they will really be in the national spotlight.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:04 am
I understand the exception if he majors in something not offered at UCONN, but as a senior, it seems like it would be difficult for him to switch majors this late in the game and still graduate. I definitely want him, but I don’t think he is worth putting our APR in jeopardy since he likely wouldn’t be able to graduate.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:18 am
oriakhi can move to the 4 spot if you came in. This would leave room for a flat Top player in the post. They also know each other very well. Oriakhi was the 5th overall center coming out in 2009 with a 96 score would be a major play with skills.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:21 am
All too common misconception… #34 APR has nothing to do with graduating. APR just dictates that the student athlete has to finish the coursework for the time that they are here. So one n done for example, isn’t a dent on your APR if the student finishes classes started during both semesters.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:23 am
It remains to be asked, but UConn’s issue is with their APR score, right? Did Oriakhi contribue to that problem? Yeah he would be a great fit at UK, but would he hurt in other ways? I’ll hang up and listen to your response.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:24 am
Wow. As I’m trying to type my comment and work at the same time, somebody beat me to the punch. Sorry.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:47 am
Yes he would get all kinds of media coverage in LA as he goes through the 3 weeks of the NCAA tournament. Oh, wait……..
April 5th, 2012 at 10:48 am
If he was eligible to play then he wasn’t an APR problem.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:59 am
Oriakhi had a 3.7 or 3.8 GPA. If anything, he’d be a great boost to our APR because he will improve team GPA and he will graduate. Not sure if transfers into a program who graduate help your APR, but I’m assuming they do, right?
April 5th, 2012 at 11:10 am
36. APR is actually related to graduating to a certain extent. A player may leave early without graduating if he goes pro. That is the only way APR is not affected if a player does not graduate. In Oriakhi’s case, he would need to major in something not offered by UCONN. As a senior, if he has in fact maintained adequate progress toward his degree while at UCONN, he should be very far along in his program. That means that he would be switching majors to something that would likely not have a lot of credits that would be in common with his previous degree program. This would cause him to likely take several years to get a degree in his new major. We are basically betting that Oriakhi would get drafted, but what if he doesn’t. Then UK’s APR is likely hurt by Oriakhi.
April 5th, 2012 at 11:18 am
Welcome aboard.
April 5th, 2012 at 11:24 am
We need Alex Oriakhi, a won and done who will graduate. Love it. Let them put that in their pipe and smoke it.
April 5th, 2012 at 11:30 am
Even our transfers are one and done!
April 5th, 2012 at 11:31 am
42. Disagree. Stacey Poole didn’t go pro, but his leaving did not hurt our APR. The guys that Cal encouraged to transfer, they did not go pro and did not hurt our APR. If player is in good academic standing when he leaves the school, APR is not affected.
April 5th, 2012 at 11:31 am
He should come here if he wants to improve and have a chance at another ring. Also, I’ve read that he’s friends with Noel, which could help.
If he wants max possible minutes, UNC.
If he wants to learn to flop and be stuck behind endless goofy white guys, Duke.
April 5th, 2012 at 12:12 pm
If he comes here he simply has to receive a waiver from the sec, and NCAA.
UCONN must be banned from postseason play which they have appealed.
He would give us senior leadership, is good friends with Noel, and would give us much needed muscle. He would split time with Wiltjer, and makes a better option than Bennett.
This would put us in prime contention to get Randle the following year, who is a must get.
Bennett is not a likely to leave after one season.
His attitude and twitter pouting over Drummond was not good.
He has a good gpa, and worked hard and bought into the team concept he might flourish.
He has seen the best and worse of college ball.
He won a championship, and was on a highly dysfunctional team this year.
I bet we get him, and could get Jefferson as well to play small forward with Poythress.
A Poythress/Jefferson 6-8 but skinny combo would be deadly.
April 5th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
#14 AG Degree?
April 5th, 2012 at 12:21 pm
I’d take a pass.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:46 pm
In addition to him killing our chances of winning another National Championship last year and him playing for UCONN in general, i don’t want him because he is a prima donna. He will be upset after the first couple games about playing time. Don’t need a chemistry killer on a team full of young freshman. No thanks.
