[Moderated by Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson]

The USBWA named Missouri head coach Frank Haith its winner of the Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award. John Calipari was in the running for the honor, but winning a lot of games and not choking in March isn’t a qualification, apparently.
Bill Self and Jim Boeheim were the other two finalists for the award.
I assume these votes were tallied last week because there is Norfolking way this was decided after this weekend’s tournament games.

Drew said Norfolking way!!! Hilarious!
March 19th, 2012 at 1:19 pm
hahaha! was that voted on before or after missouri got bounced? amazing! lets see what kinda coach frank is in a year or two when the players at missou are all his and not someone elses recruits…
March 19th, 2012 at 1:20 pm
Good pick. He won a lot of tournament games, lol.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:22 pm
baylor coach on rome saying ohio u kid and his mom are mistaken about baylor trying to get the kid to transfer after his freshmen year.
bs! zags blog story says baylor and ut (pearl) tried to get kid to transfer after freshmen year. shady!
March 19th, 2012 at 1:23 pm
Cal isn’t going to win Coach of the Year; to the voters, voting for Cal is awarding bad behavior.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:23 pm
Cal could go 40-0 with qaudraplegics, wax every team by 60 points and still the COY would go to someone else.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Hah..norfolking..nice
March 19th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
How was Izzo not a finalist?
March 19th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Award committee: We can’t give our prestigious award to a rumored cheater!! Let’s give it to Frank Hai..oh, wait. Really? Damn.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Haith rode the coat tails of a very good group of players that were filled with upper classman and lost to a 15 seed. Cal earned the #1 overall seed and lost 1 regular season game with the second youngest team in the NCAA…..but yeah…..good job Frank. You will njever see Missouri have a team like this year because Haith is a fraud of a coach. You will see.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
BS! Norfolking way indeed. Coach Cal is the simply the best coach (person) in basketball period! Winning the National Championship will be Cal’s revenge!
March 19th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
I feel really bad for coach cal. He deserved this award! It had his name all over it. What he has accomplished at UK is truly incredible! He recruits the best, they play the best, that sounds like coach of the year to me.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:35 pm
That last line is epic
March 19th, 2012 at 1:37 pm
Drew, i am not one for foul-laced-language as it is simply too commonplace and…i’m a proud-prude. BUT…that was hilarious! And this will catch on, fortunately and unfortunately. There is simply no-Norfolking way we won’t hear this, at least, through-out the reminder of March Madness. Norfolking way, the Angry man will ever say KentuckY! Norfolking way IU beats KentuckY again. Love it!
March 19th, 2012 at 1:38 pm
I say hang #8 and worry about awards some other time. Cal has to win the championship to get respect from the national sports media. It’s as simple as that.
March 19th, 2012 at 1:38 pm
Please don’t be haters… Haith did a good job
In his first year … Cal is the standard to which all try to achieve
Let his talking take place on the court…
March 19th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Wait everyone! Has anyone checked with Drew to find out how we should feel about this situation? Or maybe how we should feel about it tomorrow?
March 19th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
16) Haith was a crappy coach at Miami, and the Missouri fanbase didn’t want him as such. He was given a Top 10 team by Mike Anderson, and he won’t reach any sort of heights like this again once the talent he was given is gone. Cal gets punished because he’s a great recruiter. The difference in college is that the coach is also the GM and should be viewed as such. It’s your job to bring in the talent, then to coach them. If the guys you bring in aren’t effective, it’s on you. Read that last sentence Pitino
March 19th, 2012 at 1:59 pm
i see what you did there..lmao
March 19th, 2012 at 2:00 pm
Love, love, love Drew Franklin. Now, please somebody(Drew) tell me what happened with Matt and some other media person this weekend. I can’t go to other message boards to find out…this is the only message board I go to. I don’t even know what other message boards are out there.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Right on Drew – Norfolking way this should have happened.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:05 pm
Coach Cal will never win COY. The media hates UK and it hates Coach Cal. Bobby Knight was an azzhole to the media after every lose and a lot of times after wins. They reward him with millions to be a commentator.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:09 pm
Haha……You said Norfolking!
Great post.
Go CATS!!!
March 19th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
18) he still had to coach this team and get them to play well. Cal shud have won the award for last years run… Just tired of hearing all the hating comin from BBN. Let’s win on the court that’s all that matters. We know we are the best. Sit back watch and enjoy let them have those other trophies I want #8
March 19th, 2012 at 2:17 pm
Norfolking way…funny Drew!!!
March 19th, 2012 at 2:24 pm
Haith and Tubby are from the same mode. They get great talent from other people’s team to be a flash in the pan once it comes to having their own people on board. I’m not bad mouthing them, I like them both. They’re fine gentlemen and everyone likes them, but they cannot bring in the people to get over the hump…..As in the Golden Gophers, see how that turned out?
March 19th, 2012 at 2:29 pm
Does Henry Iba have some sort of underlying meaning similar to “second best” if that is the case, congratulations. Otherwise, this award is clearly bias.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
“Norfolking way”
Not gonna lie, I lol’d.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:40 pm
Another example of why winning COY awards is something you probably DON’T want a UK coach doing. They give those awards to overachievers. UK shouldn’t ever have to overachieve, just achieve.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:40 pm
I’ve already been prepared for the najority of these coaching awards to go to Haith. I’m sure Cal could give a tiny rat’s ass about any of these, so why should I? He’s trying to hang #8.
March 19th, 2012 at 2:50 pm
BRILLIANT!!
March 19th, 2012 at 3:18 pm
UK97, you called it, they have 9 seniors on their team. We will see what kind of coaching job he achieves next year!
March 19th, 2012 at 3:22 pm
24) He did coach his team, right out of the tournament the first game. That same team that beat his got brow-betaen by Florida yesterday. Good coaches don’t lose those games with far superior rosters.
March 19th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
My hats off to Drew Franklin’s play on words. Now that was good Drew.
March 19th, 2012 at 3:30 pm
There has not been a “Henry Iba COY” winner win the national championship since Wooden in 73′. Kind of makes you think the Henry Iba award isn’t that prestigious. Also, Coach K has never won it and he has 4 national championships. I’m not saying Coach K deserves it, but hey, he’s won 4 titles….We’ve still got the AP, NABC and the Naismith COY’s to go. Of which Calipari has won each at one time or another. Go Cats!
March 19th, 2012 at 3:55 pm
Norfolking way…. Awesome.
March 19th, 2012 at 3:59 pm
26) gee because tubby didnt bring in the 03 team right?
March 19th, 2012 at 4:22 pm
26 – The Tubby analogy doesn’t work. Tubby took his “inherited” players to a national title. Missouri did not. (Also, Tubby put together one of UK’s best teams ever in 2003 and was a Bogans injury away from another title.)
Maybe you meant Missouri’s coach is like Minnesota Tubby. But Tubby in his prime was pretty damn good.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:23 pm
Oops, WWMKG said it faster and better.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:37 pm
There’s NORFOLKIN way i’m saying Kentucky will win it all.
norfolkin…that was hilarious.
March 19th, 2012 at 4:45 pm
Yes, he had to install a new system, but he also returned a lot of talent. Cal, on the other hands, recruited his players (except Darius). Recruiting a great team and then coaching them well should make Cal more a candidate for the awards.
March 19th, 2012 at 6:15 pm
i’m just pissed kevin stallings didn’t win it
March 19th, 2012 at 6:43 pm
If any Kentucky fans would bother to be educated on all that Frank Haith has done in the past year as a new, incoming coach, your comments would be less critical. He is humble, Christian man and very deserving of this award.
March 19th, 2012 at 7:38 pm
43) COY awards are not given for humanitarian reasons or how good a person you are perceived to be. Haith may well be an excellent human being, but so was Mother Teresa. She never won a COY award.
March 19th, 2012 at 8:03 pm
If MY Insurance Company ever pays Bob Knight to make a Commercial,I will change companies pronto.
March 19th, 2012 at 8:14 pm
Do yourselves a favor and read about all Frank Haith has done as a coach at Missouri. And “being a good person” may not win awards but it does positively impact the program and the players. I don’t think Haith is going to have any games taken away anytime soon.
March 19th, 2012 at 8:20 pm
Hello cats fans! If you love Kentucky Basketball and would like to support my wedding fund, go to http://www.yourexpressivemoments.com/blog and vote for my fiance in their mustache pic contest. Thanks alot and Go Cats!!!
March 19th, 2012 at 8:41 pm
The award is for the best basketball coaching job. Recruiting is one talent, and teaching/coaching/game management is another skill. The first one is not given an explicit award, although national championships are associated with good recruiting. The disadvantage for coaches such as Coach K and Calipari is that when you are loaded with future NBA talent, it is difficult to prove how good a coach you really are. Though, you can demonstrate how bad a coach you are as he did against KU in the championship game.
March 19th, 2012 at 8:52 pm
26 misses and 38 hits it. I suppose the ability to Coach in the tournament is irrelevant so, really Shoeshovski and his mentor are merely average coaches. two things, actually, kept Tubby from Superstardom….Bogie’s injury and Tom Izzo.
Coach of the Year is, by true definition, the coach of the team of the year, not who some poll votes. This is yet to be determined, but my money’s on Cal. And ANT Davis is the player of the year , not because some may or may not vote him as such, but because King Rex has anointed him as such. We don’t call him King Rex for nothing.
