Since the Sports Illustrated expose of the UCLA basketball program came out this morning, everyone’s been wondering how it would affect the Bruins’ recruitment of Shabazz Muhammad. His father, Ron Holmes, told ESPN’s Dave Telep that the story wouldn’t necessarily eliminate UCLA from the running, but they will “have to get control of that program”:
“It doesn’t really effect us that much but UCLA is going to have to get control of that program if they’re going to go forward. You have to discipline those guys and get rid of them if need be.”
“… Yes, (Shabazz) could go to school there right now because I understand what was going on. I saw (Reeves) Nelson’s shenanigans. He was out of control and I was trying to figure it out because I’ve always heard that Coach Howland was a disciplinarian. Eventually Coach Howland did (dismiss Nelson),” said Holmes, who played basketball at USC. “It doesn’t effect us in that regard but obviously it has some effect because when you put that program against other programs that don’t have issues, it might have an effect.”
Time to pounce.

let me translate……there is no way my son will go to that school, in that environment, with that nut job of a coach.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:16 pm
and……”it might have an effect”……that would be the Kentucky Effect!
February 29th, 2012 at 5:17 pm
I said GIT’em!
February 29th, 2012 at 5:19 pm
We don’t want your damn son Mr. Mohammed Al Kaboom! We are a christian team!
February 29th, 2012 at 5:20 pm
You want to go pro? You know where to go!
February 29th, 2012 at 5:20 pm
They did a bit on “Around the Horn” on Kentucky. I think it had to do with bob knight can someone post a link if they can find it. I didn’t get to hear what they said, caught it a the last second
February 29th, 2012 at 5:20 pm
Getting that program under control would entail cleaning house from top to bottom and essentially starting over. No way Shabazz goes to a school in a condition like that….just like his dad said: why go there when there are others that aren’t in that condition.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:24 pm
4.
Nazr Mohammad and Suleyman ‘Jules’ Cammara not ring a bell to you?
February 29th, 2012 at 5:25 pm
We don’t need these bush-league tactices to recruit and these crazy ass storys could be pointed our way next.just because it’s been published doesn’t make it right like the story about Davis family getting paid off. So tread lightly hear and hope it doesn’t come back and bite us in the rear
February 29th, 2012 at 5:29 pm
#1: I disagree with your translation. If anything, his father is rationalizing / excusing Ben Howland’s management if the program. I have no doubt about him committing to UCLA now.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:31 pm
Affect… Effect…
February 29th, 2012 at 5:36 pm
THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING ! … no wait, that’s just the X talking
February 29th, 2012 at 5:36 pm
11) if Bazz comes to UK, UCLA will be depressed, therefore ‘affect’
Tyler was being creative with the language
February 29th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
11, 13 – I’ve made many typos in my life, but this is not one of them.
grammar.yourdictionary.com/style-and-usage/affect-effect-grammar.html
If anything, Telep’s grammar is wrong.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:48 pm
Shabazz’s face looks too much like Chris Duhon, so he will surprise everyone by choosing Duke.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:50 pm
If it already wasn’t a done deal, this is the nail in the coffin. Read the whole story it has some pretty awful stuff in it. If I’m a recruit and thinking about UCLA that article is a deal breaker. No one wants to play for a guy like that. And I don’t care what his dad says, this is a big deal. Hmmm who should i play for, a guy who has done nothing but treat his players and staff like crap, or a guy who is at the peak of his career and turns out NBA players like it literally is his job. Tough choice.
February 29th, 2012 at 5:50 pm
12) I love it haha
February 29th, 2012 at 5:53 pm
Like all the posts.. Except those singing “under the bridge”… Trolls.. Just cause Louisville isn’t in the hunt …hate the game not the players

February 29th, 2012 at 6:04 pm
#15 That’s a strait up insult lol Maybe if you shot lemon juice in his eyes.
February 29th, 2012 at 6:06 pm
A 20 minute long article that completely rips apart UCLAs program is the greatest thing that could have happened for us in the recruitment of Shabazz. Any sane parent that reads something like this should automatically throw the consideration of UCLA out the door. This is great news.
February 29th, 2012 at 6:37 pm
Bazz will look good in that UK jersey
February 29th, 2012 at 6:38 pm
Okay, this may be a stupid question and someone may have already answered it, but why does Shabazz’s father have a different last name?
February 29th, 2012 at 6:47 pm
It’s his foster dad. His real dad left Shabazz and his mother to join the Jihad movement in Afganistan in the early 1990′s.
February 29th, 2012 at 6:51 pm
I can’t imagine that he picks UCLA after this…if he does, it sends a message to the NBA that he’s not serious and just wants to go somewhere and party/not work…which isn’t a good image going into the draft.
February 29th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
10- I hear you. He sure took to the airwaves quickly. Almost like PR damage control. Who cares where he goes. I want him very badly bu, we dont beg for anyone! we will be fine either way.
February 29th, 2012 at 6:54 pm

February 29th, 2012 at 6:56 pm
Oh I am a die-hard UK fan Jim! I just don’t want no damn mooslim on our great christian team!
February 29th, 2012 at 6:59 pm
I think we are in race with Kansas now for Shabazz! We all will find out in month or so. Go Cats 8pril #occupynola #getshabazz #flattopfeller
February 29th, 2012 at 6:59 pm
@Matt and Drew, how is “Jerry Tipton’s glass eyeball” and the IP address not banned from posting on this site due to racist comments?
February 29th, 2012 at 7:03 pm
do you think Shabazz feels like he is not our #1 priority now that we got more excited over Nerlens and kinda put him in the shotgun seat rather than the drivers seat like he was sitting in.
He must feel jaded a lil bit now that he is number 2 on our wish list.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:04 pm
31 there’s no difference. superstitions and fairy tales just that, no matter how you slice it.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:05 pm
34 because even though we disagree with 31, we still live in the USA. Love it or leave it baby
February 29th, 2012 at 7:05 pm
33 seriously? this is the internet dude. grow a pair and turn the other cheek.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:06 pm

February 29th, 2012 at 7:08 pm
censorship is the worst. Just ask Ms. Tyler from Russia
February 29th, 2012 at 7:09 pm
I don’t think Matt Jones wants to be known as allowing blatant racism. Maybe I am wrong, but I doubt it.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:09 pm
I wish I had a time machine. I could actually be coached into an NBA player if I went to UK.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:12 pm
41 islam isn’t a race anyway
February 29th, 2012 at 7:14 pm
Ok UofL fans, go home. You’ve have stooped to racism on a rival website to try and interfere with their recruiting juggernaut Coach. Its not working btw.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:16 pm
41. Damn is this your first time on the internet?
February 29th, 2012 at 7:19 pm
LOL I was just having some fun @ Jim. I don’t care is Shabazz is muslim or not as long as the kid can ball.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:19 pm
@45, not it’s not my first time. But at the same time, Matt shouldn’t let posters make derogatory comments about a recruit’s name, and try to tie that person to something that may not be true. All in an attempt to get the recruit to hate UK. Just as Matt wouldn’t let anyone say anything derogatory toward Joker Phillips, why should he allow this?
February 29th, 2012 at 7:22 pm
#34 That is the most ignorant and stupid comment I have seen in a while. Our country and the main tenet of the constitution is for freedom of religion. Where we’re you in1998?

Why did the LA Clippers make “Clipper Darrel” take the “Clipper” out of his name. He’s been as loyal as “Fat UK Beard Guy”
February 29th, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Benjamin Lincoln, paid for Shabazz to take unofficial visits to both Duke and UNC.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:40 pm
This is just the NCAA being stupid and attempting to steer teams (UK especially) away from Shabazz. If he goes to UK, they will probably make up another Enes Kanter rule, but if he goes to Duke then everything will be fine.
Didn’t Shabazz take an unofficial visit to UK for midnight madness? Or was that an official visit?
And UK doesn’t wear Adidas, so there is no conflict there.

If Ryan Boatright can be given a car and cash then……
February 29th, 2012 at 7:46 pm
Kiss him goodbye. Cal will not get near him now.
February 29th, 2012 at 7:59 pm
Time for Coach K to swoop in and snag Bazz. You see, Coach K long ago earned an immunity idol somehow, and though he was only supposed to have it for one challenge, he never gave it back. Consequently, the NCAA cannot punish him for anything he does. They even stopped paying attention years ago. Bazz can safely play there. Similarly, UConn’s Coach Calhoun has a Save that lets them continually avoid the worst punishments despite constantly cheating.
It’s a real shame. I’d love to get Noel, Bazz and Bennett.
February 29th, 2012 at 8:04 pm
Shabazz in Duke bound! Bank on it!
February 29th, 2012 at 10:31 pm
Translation…. it does effect Shabazz much because he’s not going to UCLA.
March 1st, 2012 at 8:26 am
Way I see it, Cats might as well give on on recruiting him now…. We all know if he comes to UK now, the NCAA will declare him ineligible, but, if he goes anywhere else, he’s in the clear.
