According to Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony, the NCAA has moved the early-entry deadline to enter the NBA Draft up to April 10th, a mere 8 days after the NCAA Championship:
Been informed the NCAA’s early-entry deadline has indeed been moved up to April 10th. Much earlier than the NBA’s deadline (April 29th).

That means that college players need to decide whether they’re staying in the draft a week after the Final Four. Int’ls have till June 18th.

Something tells me Mark Emmert is behind this…time to send Drew Franklin up to investigate?

That’s a kick in the crotch. They don’t have time to investigate if they are focused on the task at hand. #8

What a crock. The deadline should be the same date for students to enroll for the current semester. I mean they are STUDENT ATHLETES.. RIGHT?

Nothing like forcing players who are often teenagers into having to make rush, poorly-informed judgments about things that can affect the entire course of the rest of their lives. Nice work, NCAA…

#2 Not here at UK.
February 17th, 2012 at 2:34 pm
why
February 17th, 2012 at 2:35 pm
How is the NCAA going to enforce that one. Someone decides to leave after their deadline and the NCAA think that they can force them to stay? Seems like the NBA are the only ones who can enforce this.

2) Nah, you have to agree to scholarships before then, and they’re athletes on scholarships. If you let them keep the schollie hostage until classes start, coaches would be screwed. It’s a two-way street.
6) No, it’s that they can’t come back after that point. They can only “test the water” til that date. After that date, you can’t come back.

Am I the only one who kinda likes this?
February 17th, 2012 at 2:46 pm
So the NCAA comes up with a new rule that would disproportionately affect Kentucky? Based on the kinds of kids that Cal recruits, this basically means that 50% – 75% of the teams starters in any given year will struggle to stay focused on NCAA tournament games because they’re a couple of weeks away from having to make a life-altering decision. This reeks of that assh*le Emmert.
February 17th, 2012 at 2:48 pm
This benefits the NCAA, schools, coaches and fans, also known as those concerned with revenue generation for the college game. It does not benefit the players, also known as the people the damn rule should be designed to benefit.

Why are ya’ll bitching about this? It actually helps us! All of our players knew the when they signed their L.O.I. they were gone after their first season. This helps us get recruits faster.

This rule goes one of two ways:
1. Kids don’t have enough time to make an informed decision, thus resulting in a very poor decision
2. Kids don’t have enough time to make an informed decision and decide to stay because so – making it the RIGHT decision
I think option 2 is the intent, but as with most things, the NCAA didn’t think it through.

Time to send Drew in!

So… it is before the walls of Minas Tirith the doom of our time shall be decided!

If players do not declare to test the waters of the NBA, can they still work out for scouts? Does this new date mean that a player that may have been in the final four has to declare to test the waters of the NBA, work out for scouts, and then make a descision in one week? That’s not very good for the player if that is the case.
February 17th, 2012 at 3:30 pm
Can someone help me out here?
Why would a kid say he was going to the NBA by April 10th? Just say you are staying in the NCAA and then when the NBA deadline approaches make your actual decision. Essentially, if you do ultimately go to the NBA who cares what the NCAA’s rule is.
Not sure what the NCAA is trying to do here except for have players lie to them.

April 11th: Nerlens Noel, Shabazz Muhammad and Anthony Bennett…come on down!!
February 17th, 2012 at 3:39 pm
What on earth is the point of this? I just want an explaination. I can only see a downside, and can’t possibly think of any positives unless they’re just doing everything they can do to try to screw up Kentucky.

Another mock draft, another #1 for Davis. Also has MKG going #3, and Jones going #9. Not bad.

#16 – I agree. But, after the deadline they can’t workout which won’t help in their decision. I also think any contact with scouts after that deadline may be impermissible contact and could hurt the school – not for certain but wouldn’t surprise me if so knowing how the NCAA is.
Before all is said and done, eventually the NCAA will say Dec 31 is the deadline and force kids to decide during the season (sarcasm)
February 17th, 2012 at 4:19 pm
I like the rule. It helps spring recruiting and cuts through all of the shit surrounding which players will stay and which will go (aka “testing the waters”). If they elect to stay another year great, if not Cal can show recruits that playing time is available.
February 17th, 2012 at 4:28 pm
Way to encourage bad decisions NCAA!
February 17th, 2012 at 5:39 pm
I actually think this will make more players stay an extra year. After the ncaa tournament, assuming their team didn’t win the championship, many kids are still super emotional over the loss and in the mode of “gotta come back next year, gotta correct this”….the longer they have to decide the better the nba looks. That being said, the rule sucks for the players.
February 17th, 2012 at 7:27 pm
This is a great thing! We have to know who have room for and who we don’t. The sooner that happens the more likely we are to sign recruits before someone else does.
February 17th, 2012 at 8:45 pm
I think it may be good for the kids who are in the final 4. Why would they have to work out for the scouts? What better way to rate a kid who’s playing against the best teams at the end of the season, beside if the NBA wants them they’ll get an eye full there.
It also could be a way for the NCAA to put it back at the NBA for NOT making it a mandatory two year rule. But if Emmert had anything to do with it, he has to think this will hurt UK!
