NIKE PERFORMANCE MEETS SUSTAINABILITY

IN NEW NIKE HYPER ELITE PLATINUM UNIFORM

Nine Top NCAA Basketball Teams to Don Specially Designed Uniforms

Made from Recycled Polyester

BEAVERTON, Ore. (January 25, 2012) – We’ve reached the point of the season when the truly talented begin to distinguish themselves from the competition. And while teams desperately seek to set the gold standard for 2012, Nike will pay tribute to those who have already reached elite status by outfitting select teams in the next generation of college basketball design: the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniform.

As the latest and most innovative fit system, the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniform is designed at the intersection of sustainability and performance. The specially designed short and jersey combination will be worn by nine of the nation’s top college basketball teams in select games during the 2012 season.

The nine teams all have won National Championships in Nike footwear and apparel. The programs donning the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniforms in 2012 include The University of Arizona, Baylor University (women’s), Duke University, University of Florida, University of Kentucky, Syracuse University, The University of Connecticut (men’s and women’s) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nike created the uniforms specifically for superior performance and lower environmental impact. The fabric of the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum shorts are made from 100 percent recycled polyester while the jersey fabric is made from at least 96% recycled polyester. Both short and jersey are tailored for the optimal efficiency of movement and are five percent lighter than the previous Nike Hyper Elite uniform. Featuring laser-cut bonded logos, a sharp platinum design as well as prominent accent colors, the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniforms are sure to shine on the court.

“Nike is committed to producing top-of-the-line performance attire with reduced sacrifice to the environment,” said Phil Cook, Nike’s Brand Manager for Basketball. “With our Nike Hyper Elite Platinum design, Nike is maintaining its long-standing obligations to our fans to not only produce the best on-court looks but also a design that makes use of the resources we already have.”

In 2011, Nike affirmed its commitment to increasing its use of more sustainable materials by doubling its use of recycled polyester, using approximately 440 million PET plastic bottles, enough to cover over 12,000 basketball courts, and 2012 will build off of those successes.

The short includes laser perforations in side panels for increased breathability while featuring a lightweight 4-way stretch woven design. The bonded hem detailing found on the short and the bonded back seam near the neckline on the jersey enhances both comfort and style. Additionally, the front of the jersey features a lightweight Nike Sphere fabric, while the back includes a full Nike Aerographics back panel.

The uniforms will hit the hardwood beginning late-January for some of oldest and strongest rivalries in college basketball. Dates include UConn vs. Notre Dame (1/29), Kentucky vs. Tennessee (1/31), Duke vs. Maryland (2/11), Baylor (women’s) vs. Texas A&M (2/11), Florida vs. Tennessee (2/11), Syracuse vs. USF (2/22), Arizona vs. UCLA (2/25), UConn (women’s) vs. Notre Dame (2/27) and UNC vs. Maryland (2/29).

Dirty. I hated the silver versions that were being sold last year. These on the other hand are amazing

  2. Mr Schwump Says:

    Goog lord.

  3. Mr Schwump Says:

    Make that good lord.

  4. Dr. Wildcat Says:

I know I look forward to the classic Syracuse vs. USF rivalry every year!

  5. Rick Pitino Says:

    When do we get these?

  6. Um... Says:

    Double post fail…

  7. Caliparty8 Says:

Nike thinks they can overshadow the fact that the use child labor by making these “green” uniforms. They would be cool if every other team didn’t have them. Bring back the keightley black unis.

  8. UKpharmer2 Says:

why the heck are we in the back? We should be front and center

  9. TeachMeBoutKentucky Says:

Uni-Watch.. always pulls through on their promises

  10. Don Says:

    Beast Mode! Love them

  11. BigBlueBrock Says:

Would really like to see some better pictures so I can see the details.

  12. Mark Wilson Says:

They look alright …no complaints here

  13. the ghost of Bill Hicks Says:

    Way worse than the denim.

  14. The Cheese Says:

Nike pimping these as environmental friendly is a joke. They are probably made in some sweat shop in Bangladesh and shipped to the USA. That being said, I like them. Throw in a splash of black and they would be sweet.

  15. Blue Bayou Says:

    WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLORS, BABY?

    BLUE AND WHITE! (not grey)

These uniforms are boring and they all look the same. I want to see a lot of BLUE and I want to stand out from the crowd, not wear boring grey uniforms that are identical to everyone else’s.

  16. UK64 Says:

    Ugly, unKentuckian

  17. Tomas Says:

Are we only wearing them for one game or the rest of the season?

  18. kingrex Says:

#7 Exactly! Nike is an evil company and these uniforms suck. I am sorry, are we actually owned by Nike? Actually I fear the answer to that question. Why is it they dictate when teams get new uniforms?

  19. Beans Says:

    Eww.

  20. Duke is the Best Says:

Only Blue that matters is DUKE BLUE

  21. Halb Says:

those are terrible. When did gray become a UK color?

  22. Rich Pitino has daddy issues Says:

Do they have the watermark onthe back? So Baylor girls and football r Nike and boys BB r adidas

  23. Blue_Cat75 Says:

They couldn’t find a white boy to wear the Duke uni? These things look hideous!

  24. Speaking of Blue Says:

We’re lucky. The UK Blue trim is the only color that goes well with that platinum base on the uniforms.

  25. Jim Says:

24 – yeah, and the orange one is turrible.

  26. You Can Call Me Cal Says:

#20, that’s confusing, cause in this picture the “Duke Player” is in the back corner and you can’t even see him

  27. Blue/White Says:

Another reason why UK fans are the best

    http://eye-on-college-basketball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/26283066/34554615

We camp out for a week for a pre-season scrimmage and Duke won’t even fill its student section for real games. GO BIG BLUE!

  28. Greg Says:

So, is platinum now another word for boring?? If I wanted our jerseys to look like everyone else’s, I wouldn’t have to be a UK fan……I would be a Duke fan………

Why does the world keep trying to pigeon hole everyone into the same mold? What a waste of a good idea.

  29. Cobalt Cat Says:

These are home unis not replacing road blue. Grey w/ blue trim is not a huge departure from white with grey trim.

Not too impressed, but it’s not sacrilege….

  30. lldjr Says:

    ‘Cuse, ‘Zona, ‘Tucky.

  31. Blue Reality Says:

Hello Nike…..Uh…no thank you, we won’t be wearing those….they look like crap.

    Thanks

    Cal

  32. Blue/White Says:

I think the unis are kind of ugly, in my opinion the best one’s I have seen are the blue checkerboard pattern with the black K at the beginning of Kentucky on the front. No reason we shouldn’t still honor Keightley with awesome uniforms.

  33. knowyourhistroy Says:

The nine teams all have won National Championships in Nike footwear and apparel.

Should someone tell Nike that UK has never won a national championship wearing Nike? Unless, you you count Converse that is now owned by Nike. Denim, Denim, Denim…

  34. El hombre Juan Says:

They look like they are made of plastic. Must be the thousands of pet bottles. Cool. Who is the ad wizard that came up with this one?

  35. awesometron Says:

    http://farm8.static.flickr.com/7158/6760582571_9928bcaf8a_o.png

There is a better image. They incorporated the checkerboard on the trim.

It doesn’t matter what the fans think. The players and recruits LOVE this kind of thing. Plus it puts UK’s name out there with “Elite”. Uniforms change over time. No one plays in short satin shorts anymore. Whether you like them or not, embrace the fact that Nike is making special uniforms for the Cats and that certainly doesn’t hurt when looking at the big picture.

  36. Tony Dizelk Says:

What’s to like? Look bland to me.

  37. tom5673 Says:

the uniforms uk wore during the ’06 season, which were a throwback to the 1978 national title uniform, were perfect. i’ve been saying for years that our uniforms suck, and these platinum ones are just plain awful. for me, it’s more than the fact that they’re platinum. it’s the fact that kentucky (our program, tradition, fan base, etc.) is lumped in with other programs and forced to wear basically identical uniforms as other teams. i’m okay with nike being innovative and creating new styles, but why are they the same. they don’t tell alabama, ohio st., stanford, usc, oregon, florida, etc. that the football teams are all going to wear the same basic design. imo, that’s part of what makes college football great…the traditional uniforms. teams have identity and tradition. but, in the end, it’s all about winning basketball games and capturing titles. as long as uk cuts the nets down twice in new orleans this year, who really gives a shit. but, these unis are ridiculously bad.
go back and check out photos of rondo in the ’06 throwbacks. absolute perfection.

  38. Dimmy Jykes Says:

Is it necessary to say the “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill”? Was anybody expecting UNC-Greensboro or UNC-Charlotte to be outfitted with Nike Elite threads?

  39. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Says:

    33. Our 1998 team wore Nike. Maybe you should “study your history” more.

  40. kingrex Says:

These are horrible uniforms…grey is NOT our school color.

  41. Lame Says:

why dont we get an abbreviated name?

    TUCKY

  42. Don Says:

They do it for the kids. The kids love the fancy changes, so get over it. All you rantards that type a paragraph @ color changes in uniforms need to go comb that grey dome, put on some comfy sweat pants, and ride around the house on your scooter.

  43. jesse Says:

    Wow..those are hideous …

  44. Captain Obvious Says:

Is Nike stereotyping basketball by the models the are using?

  45. David Says:

Not a huge fan of these unis. I noticed the UNC jersey has the MJ logo. It’s tough to tell on our uni, but please, PLEASE tell me it’s a Nike swoosh instead of a Lebron logo…

  46. David Says:

    @37… These unis?

    http://bigbluehistory.net/bb/Graphics/Teams/2005-06.jpg

  47. ryan Says:

In all fairness, this is a low-res, poorly-lit picture.

  48. Bledsoe's Biceps Says:

Unis look ok, but BFD. They aren’t special/unique/elite when a dozen other schools are wearing the same basic thing. And I love the over hyped marketing crap from Nike, like being 5% lighter. Nothing to see here, so move along.

  49. DEasy Says:

Is it a coincidence that all of the “rivalry” games feature nike schools against non-nike schools? they didnt choose the games because of rivalries they just want to try and show underarmour and adidas up.

  50. jp7 Says:

Stupid looking. Looks like someone just ran out of ideas for classy looking uniforms and stuck this on the board. Stick with UK blue and white.

  51. Cherith Cutestory Says:

    44) that is exactly what I thought.

  52. Obamasaystaxemall Says:

    ugly just plain ugly

UK is blue and white…. not blue and platinum or white with gold, or blue trim on white letters on magnesium grey material…

why would we want to mimic other schools and
push Nike uniform sales of this junk.

  53. Mino Slick foooo Says:

U old whipsnappers need to get with the program…Its 2012 not 1956…bet the players like em..I sure do #swag

  54. KnowYourHistory Says:

39 WTF, thx I stand corrected

  55. tompkinsville Says:

to the people saying “wahhhhh, gray is not our school color”…..no joke. notice that gray isn’t the color of every other school wearing these. these are for a gimmick, they’re not the new standard uniform.

  56. Bleedin'Blue Says:

How in the hell are you supposed to tell the difference in the UK, Duke, and UNC uniform? The Duke and UK are identical, look at the shoe color, and UNC isn’t far off. If we played either of those teams in these uniforms you would have a terrible time telling which player was which on TV, especially, since silver lettering won’t pop off a gray background. What a mess.

  57. Logic is your friend Says:

#56 which is exactly why these are for select games only. Now was that so hard?

  58. 502Cat Says:

I dont understand why, if you are unveiling a new product, you would have it so poorly lit. It’s like they are trying to hide something.

  59. Cat fan in the 'ville Says:

All I can think of with all the lighter, more comfortable, recycled stuff, is Costanza getting the Yankees to wear 100% cotton uni’s. I can hear it now: Nessler, “MKG drives hard. Oh my! He has split his pants” Dykes, “Looks like he clipped-the-hip a little too hard on that rim-run.”

With that said, I do like them.

  60. tom5673 Says:

    46. no. not those unis. the throwback models they wore for a few games that year.

  61. UK64 Says:

I dont think the players like them per se. I think Nike whispers in their ears.

  62. Paducahfan Says:

If we go with tucky we can stop teasing about the ville
