Each Wednesday, ESPN’s NBA Insider Chad Ford answers questions from basketball fans across the country. With more and more of the Cats in, or on their way to, the NBA, there is a distinct Kentucky flavor to most of the answers. In this week’s chat, Chad shares his thoughts on DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Marquis Teague:
Andrew (KC): Chad, what do you make of this whole Demarcus Cousins thing? Is he done in Sacramento? Can he work elsewhere?
Chad Ford: He has talent, tons of it, but this is DeMarcus being DeMarcus. The Kings knew what they were getting when they drafted him so they have very little they can complain about. He would’ve been the No. 2 pick in the draft if he didn’t have these sorts of issues. But character and chemistry matter and that’s why most teams would’ve and still will stay away. He still is tradable, but the Kings aren’t going to get a player like Greg Monroe (who they could’ve taken in last year’s draft instead of Cousins) for him. The handling of the statement by Westphal was bizarre. But then again, lots of things the Kings do are bizarre. Sad to see a once well run franchise become the (old) Clippers.mark holmes (okemos mi.): best fit for the pistons in next year’s draft
Chad Ford: Kentucky’s Anthony Davis. But then again, I’d say that for all 30 teams. But on Detroit, especially, it would be huge to add his size and defensive abilities next to Greg Monroe.Riddler (Lair): Riddle me this- How can Anthony Davis be the concensus #1 pick and a so called sure thing we the guy has no offensive game and isn’t even the best player on his team?
Chad Ford: Potential + NBA Size NBA Athleticism Crazy Motor Amazing defensive skills = No. 1 pick. The other three guys in contention — Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones and Andre Drummond — all have warts too.Steve – o (miami): Andre Drummond is better than Davis.
Chad Ford: He isn’t better than Davis on paper, nor is he in the actual games. He’s got a better body than Davis. That’s about it.Guest (Cincinnati, OH): Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Better prospect than Harrison Barnes?
Chad Ford: That’s a tough one. Kidd-Gilchrist is one of my favorite players because he impacts the game in so many ways because of his energy and athleticism. But Barnes is such a polished scorer. If Barnes played as hard as Gilchrist or was as good of an athlete, he’d be the next Kobe. But until Gilchrist gets a consistent jumper (thought he’s gotten much better) I can’t find scouts willing to put him ahead of Barnes. Barnes best comp right now might be Danny Granger. Gilchrist is Gerald Wallace.Steve (Tokyo, Japan): Is Marquis Teague a bust? Compared to cal’s other guards, I’m not to impressed with anything about his came.
Chad Ford: Give him time. Some were writing off Brandon Knight after the first half of his freshman season. Derrick Rose got off to a slow start too. It’s a big adjustment for him. I think fans have been spoiled a bit by Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall and Knight. He’s not as good of a prospect as any of them. But he’s still got a NBA future.

“Compared to cal’s other guards, I’m not to impressed with anything about his came.” yuck.

I think Teague has huge potential. Maybe a call from Wall and/or Knight to say ‘hey, listen to coach’ would make him understand what he needs to do.

@ 2 (go deep) If he doesn’t already want to listen to a coach who has put his last several guards into the NBA as lottery picks then I don’t think a call from anyone will help. I think his biggest problem is realizing he is not “the” guy on this team and just be content to run the offense.

Right on with Cousins. Kings knew what they were getting – an unbelievably talented 20 year old that obviously needs some special attention and guidance to flourish, and maybe to be “sheltered” a little bit at first (for lack of a better word).
Also, maybe if the Kings weren’t getting the crap beat out of them every night there wouldn’t be a problem. Bottom line – The NBA is so watered down a lot of players have to become “OK” with sucking. DeMarcus is not “OK” with sucking. He gets frustrated and doesn’t handle his frustrations properly.

Tyler, even though your posts are usually well edited, i find it highly ironic that someone from KSR is calling out someone else on spelling/typos.

Barnes is a glorified version of Darius Miller. MKG is the next Lebron.

I live in Teague’s home town and know some of his family. His dad and brother told him where he was going to school and it was not his choice. That is a fact. This is a big part of the reason he and Cal have butted heads all season.

Steve from Tokyo, Japan? WTH, do they even get our games out there?
