Gillispie on Liggins

by @ 2:52 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

From Matt May last night:

“As far as his situation last night I’m a hard guy, I’m a hard coach, there’s no question about it but I’m a loving coach. I love competitors and I love guys that get madder than heck when they don’t get a chance to play. I think he could have handled it better because it would have meant more to his teammates if he handled it better but I don’t have a problem with a guy…I mean I’ve got a problem with a guy not going into a game, but he’s a competitor, he wanted to play, he didn’t handle it the right way but it’s taken care of and he’ll have a little extra stuff this week because of it. We weren’t going to penalize the team today and I asked them how they wanted to take care of it and they said, ‘Let’s play our regular rotation and try to win this game.’ He handled it great and it’ll be a big stepping stone for him.”

    I love coach G.

    Great report Matt per May.

  6. helixvortexv2 Says:

Now coach get Galloway mad and get him competing!!!

  7. HankKingsley Says:

This seems like it was the best way to handle the situation. To all of the people that have commented Gillispie was losing control or respect of the team, last night’s game was a statement. I think the team made strides, Gillispie made strides as a coach, and Liggins made strides as a point guard and leader.

  8. TheStabilizer Says:

I’m still starting though… right? RIGHT??? (noise from kicking of can)

  9. UKIreland Says:

yeah, I’m not a fan of letting a guy get away with that now. This kind of thing leads to others thinking they can do that. What do you do if it happens again. If you don’t punish someone for that kind of behaviour than the player is not learning from that mistake. BCG has set a precedent with this move, hope it doesn’t come back to bite him.

  10. TheStabilizer Says:

    # 9 - So you mean it’s possible that Porter, Stevenson, or Harris might refuse to go in the game because of what Liggins did?

    ALRIGHT!

Wait… I’m still starting though? RIGHT!??!??!!? (thud from rack of basketballs getting turned over)

  11. wildeers Says:

anyone notice all the idiots spewing BCG hate have been absent? 1 bad loss and people were assuming the sky was falling, but now the team is showing a little grit, and shaping up to be one helluva defensive squad. Its funny how moods an change over a couple of days. Hopefully we keep this momentum going, but it was tough to watch all the people bashing these players, and coaches after TWO games and calling for the coaches head…glad to see the progress…go cats

Im still here just been deppressed all day cuz i have to go back to work after 5 week layoff..But about gillispie nice job last night i think porter only played 13 minutes we got the ball inside came back in the second half so there goes the he can’t make adjustments in game argument.I was with gillispie all year last year and im glad to see i mightve been wrong about him this year.

  13. blairato Says:

I don’t understand why people are saying that coach didn’t handle the situation. He said it was a mistake by Liggins and he’ll have extra work to do this week (running his butt off, i would guess). Coach handled it and the team has moved on, and they looked good doing it.

  14. HoboKat Says:

I think Coach G will take a “balanced principles” approach to this action and to future occurrences. Its not like if Legion did this last year he would let it slide. There are times, to many people, you need to adjust and bend… and there are times you need to be rigid. I think he sees the potential in this kid (Liggins) and wants to help him.

This is the free market at work here: both parties intend to mutually benefit. Coach needs Liggins to play here, but not just play, to be an impact player. Liggins needs to be at a place where people can groom his potential. As long as Coach doesnt loose the respect of the team in the process, i have no problems with this.

  15. HankKingsley Says:

    UK Ireland,

I think Gillispie said he will be punished the next week in practice. He wasn’t punished with a loss of playing time because it was a mistake of being upset about not receiving playing time. Gillispie said he likes that fire in Liggins, but didn’t want to punish him by not giving him playing time. It sounds like he will have a few extra suicides at practice.

  16. SagaciousMind Says:

Liggins wont be gettin away with it. I’m sure he’ll be running suicides until he pukes in practice this week. Gillispie and the team knew they needed him on the court and winning the game was a little more important than his petty crap. I’m sure his attitude will change this week in practice. It was good to see that he had a good game though.

  17. blairato Says:

15 and 16) I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who understood this. Gillispie will handle it.

  18. clifford hawkins Says:

This was not handled the right way. Glad we won, but I am uneasy about this.

  19. GoCats2 Says:

He said he asked the players so how can this lead to others doing this? The players decided to stick with the regular rotation. Punish him in practice not in the game.

  20. Chris Minton Says:

this wouldnt have happened if mark coury was still here

  21. Rainbow_Man Says:

    Coach Gillispie,

And to think, all I did was laugh and I got kicked off the team. You’re like FOX News, fair and balanced.

    Sincerely,

    Dusty Mills

  22. Wookin Pa Nub Says:

18, im guessing if Gillespie handled it the way you wanted then Liggins would transfer over Christmas break. Sometimes you have to be a little flexible…These big time recruits are prima donas.

  23. clifford hawkins Says:

I just hope there is more to the story we don’t know about. I’m not trying to flame, glad we won, but I am curious how we would be reacting if AJ or KG had done this for the exact same reason as Liggins. He should have sat one game in my opinion. But hey, thats just my opinion, I’m not the coach.

  24. Chris Minton Says:

i think we all know by now that billy g isnt the typical coach. he has his own way of doing things, unorthodox though they may be at times, but so far in his career he seems to have had good results. hopefully this wont bite the team in the ass, but im not gonna question his methods

  25. HanOfTheBluegrass Says:

To those who are uneasy with how Coach handled it, what would you have preferred? The only other option was to bench or kick Liggins out, and that would’ve been a punishment to the team, as well. Gillispie gave the team the choice, since Liggins refusing to go in was harmful to them. They decided they’d rather have him on the team and able to contribute.

That was probably the best way to handle it. The Cats got a win. Liggins will get some extra running and some chats with coaches and players, and the team may just be better off for it.

If Coach had a team full of his own recruits and one does this, it might just go differently.

As for the Dusty Mills thing - walkons don’t get as much leeway as scholarship players. Particularly ones the team needs. Meeks and Patterson could get away with a lot, too, I bet.

  26. PatrickPattersonsAfro Says:

All those who are unhapy about this decision, let me ask you this:

How would you have handled it?

Guess what! This has happened before in the season. Granted it was Jared Carter, so it wasn’t that important, but it happened with another player on the team nonetheless. That’s not to throw Jared under the bus because he’s a great kid, but you all just need to realize that there’s things that go on that you can’t and will not know about for very good reasons.

21, Dusty Mills didn’t “just” laugh. He laughed, but there were obvioulsy many other times he crossed Coach. Walk-ons don’t get as much leeway as it is.

  27. fritos Says:

Dusty Mills can eat my ball sack.

  28. Rainbow_Man Says:

    26. I think not re-entering a game when your coach tells you to is worse than anything in practice. Just like in war, it doesn’t matter nearly enough in the drills as it does the game. And as I agree with you that a walk-on doesn’t get the same leeway, that still doesn’t make it fair.

  29. clifford hawkins Says:

25- you make great points, I just disagree. Coaches coach, players play. Do you guys remember how WE reacted last year when Pitino played Character after he missed curfew b/c he took it to the team and they wanted him to play. Pitino said they couldn’t have won without him (i think they were playing BYU or Ball St or someone like that). We blasted him. I can see your side, I just disagree.

  30. GoCats2 Says:

How in the world can people compare this to Dusty Mills? Walk-ons are just there to fill a spot in practice, if they are any type of distraction then they should be immediately dismissed. Scholarship players should be treated differently. I don’t understand why people still care about Mills. Ife he turned left instead of right in a scrimmage he could be let go, who gives a crap about Mills?

  31. PatrickPattersonsAfro Says:

28, I never said anything about practice.

29, That was not Caracter’s first mistake. He’s had what seems like a looong list of screw-ups in his time at loserville.

  32. Rainbow_Man Says:

And for the record, I think Liggins could be a great point guard here, no question. However, as a leader, from day one, you lay the law down on what is right, and what will not be tolerated. And as a leader, if you bend the rules and show favoritism, you create a culture of “well, he let Liggins get away with this, so………..”. It’s the same reason Marvin Lewis will lose his job this year with the Bengals. He created the culture of chaos by not laying down the law from day one. And it’s a slow, decomposing process. This worries me.

  33. Mildcat12 Says:

Trust me fellas, Liggins didn’t get away with it. BCG could have suspended him one game and we’d be headlining SportCenter, losing to WVU, and crying about BCG just cost us a great recruit OR BCG could play LIggins, avoid a MAJOR divide in the bluegrass, beat WVU, and run Liggins into the ground in practice. He wisely chose the latter. Remember, Liggins made that decision at 2:30 A.M.!!!!! Ever done anything at 2:30 A.M. you’ve later regretted? Who knows what Liggins said to BCG immediately after the game. He didn’t play him the rest of the game. But again, trust me, this did not go unpunished.

  34. bayer Says:

If all of you will stop to think, Coach G played out the string with Alex Legion also. Legion indicated he wanted to transfer. Coach G talked to him. Legion thought about it, talked to the Coach again, thought about it some more and finally transferred. Coach G didn’t give him a public deadline or anything like that. He recognizes these are young kids (regardless of how old they really are), and he doesn’t want them to make a mistake they may regret forever. If anybody understands what could happen, I, for one, am sure he does understand. We can debate down the road whether it was right or wrong, but the decision has been made and now we all can just hope for the best.

  35. Blue in the Vein Says:

BCG is a hard ass, but he isn’t stupid. BCG has to have Ligins this season or the big blue mob will have his head. He knows that Porter is not the answer, and everyone has a long way to go. Just a freshman mistake by a guy that is not use to setting the bench.

  36. voiceofreason Says:

Yeah give the kid a break. I think he is a good kid who let his emotions take over. You have to be willing to look at each situation differently. I like what G did here.

  37. catdawg Says:

Don’t forget how he handled Acie Law while at Texas A&M. He basically pushed him until he took a stand and made the team his team. BCG coaches he doesn’t play. Maybe this is want he wanted for Liggins to standup and take control. Probably would have preferred a better time to do so, but it just might be what he wanted. The PG has to be the leader and I think in the 2nd half last night we started to see Liggins be that leader. Do some research on BCG and Laws relationship especially at the first when he was about to break. BCG breaks you or makes you. It’s up to the player.

  38. westcoastukfan Says:

BCG did the right thing. liggins will pay in practice. All is good people.
