One topic that’s been getting way too much play since the game’s conclusion is the question of whether Marquis Teague traveled as he was running the clock out. The first I saw of this was Dan Wolken whining all over his Twitter feed about it. I jacked a low quality video (the best I could find) from YouTube and I trimmed it to the play in question. The debate is over what occurred between the fourth and seventh second of the video.
Honestly, it’s hard to tell but it looked like he traveled with about 0.8 seconds left on the game clock. He took three steps before throwing the ball down and running to the bench. One case I saw for him not walking was that the North Carolina player tipped the ball out of his hand and he lost it briefly. I don’t know if I buy that, though. I think he walked. That being said, I don’t think that it’s as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be. North Carolina made no effort to foul when they could have with five seconds left. The Tar Heels had waved the white flag and the referees acknowledged that.
If one of the UNC players was chasing after Teague trying to foul him and he did the same thing, then the whistle should have been blown. I don’t think that they should be rewarded when they were no longer making an effort to win the game though. After the intensity of that game and the insanity of Rupp, I think the refs were too busy breathing sighs of relief to notice Teague’s pre-celebration happy feet.
Anyone who is upset that UK won and is using this play as their primary argument for poor officiating benefiting the Cats needs to be reminded of the ridiculous overturned out of bounds call late in the game under the UNC basket that resulted in a Harrison Barnes three. There were questionable calls both ways, but for the most part this officiating team was pretty good and let the teams play. Making a fuss about this call is just whining for the sake of whining.
Now let’s stop talking about it.

He walked but there is no way that the refs are gonna call that especially after the Carolina players had given up. Plus that non call did not cost them the game. Had no impact what so-ever
December 4th, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Agreed

If UNC forgets to play the last five seconds, I think we can forgive Teague for not playing the last second of the game.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:47 pm
who cares? is this really a big deal? people won’t shut up about this. the game was friggin over.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:48 pm
But, that has happened in the past with others and it DID cost their team. Just make sure it doesn’t happen again is all I can say.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
but, but, the most bestest player in the universe, Harrison Barnes, would have taken the ball at half court, suspended time, and hit a three to win!!!! UNC was cheateds.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
Maybe you should post this on the Cards board, as they’re the retards trying to make a deal of this.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
why is nobody talking about the good play of Eloy Vargas the last two games? He has been playing TOUGH and not making any mistakes. Very improved!
December 4th, 2011 at 1:53 pm
Look closer, Teague starts “traveling” at .2 seconds. His second step was at .4 and he doesn’t travel until his third step, right? So, he traveled at .2 seconds and the human body will NEVER catch an inbounds and get a shot off within .2 seconds. Derek Fisher and his .4 shot against the Spurs was almost waved off.
According to basketball rules, Teague did not travel.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Agreed… Geeze.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Im watching the UK UL Womens game, half the basketball team is there and some of the football players are there, but what surprised me is that stacey poole is there ??? whats up with that, is he giving up on his bball career?
December 4th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
They low down, they dirty, they some snitches… I just hate ‘em.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:56 pm
Time to think “Indiana.” I hope the players will understand that a win against the CATS in Bloomington will make their entire season. Be ready CATS! Go Blue.
December 4th, 2011 at 1:57 pm
Hmm ive review it and all i see is unc losing
December 4th, 2011 at 2:00 pm
So lets say they call the walk. UNC gets the ball at half court with .008 seconds left which means they have to catch and shoot in one motion. If they ran that play 100,000 times it might work once. Get over it.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:04 pm
If you look right before he travels, the UNC player reaches in to foul. There was no call, then the Teague travels. If anything Teague should be at the line with 0.8 on the clock – unfortunately he probably misses.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:04 pm
Anybody whining about the zebras needs to start with that vicious hack on MKG (would’ve been two minutes for slashing in hockey).
December 4th, 2011 at 2:06 pm
#19 said exactly what I was going to say….I noticed that yesterday. The UNC player clearly reaches in for the intentional foul before the travel.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
It COSTED unc the game!
December 4th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
I don’t think he traveled at all. Looks to me like he kept dribbling and switched the ball to his left. From that point on, he just let the ball go, not a travel.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
Great question. For all intents and purposes, the game was over, as evidenced by no UNC defender contesting Teague’s advancement towards KENTUCKY’s half court and/or basket. Somewhat analogously, in Football, if a pass is overthrown, and the receiver has no possible chance of catching the footbal, yet there is defensive interference, a proper and judicious ‘no-call’ is appropriate.
In this case, no call was made; I concur with the several ref’s decision.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Ain’t no mole hill high enough.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
Terrence jones traveled when he pivoted just before he pump faked henson and had that huge dunk over zeller. He used to different pivot feet. But who cares, we won. Refs are never perfect, everygame i’ve watched no matter who it is thats playing, there are always missed calls and bad calls. It’s part of the game really, they cant catch everything.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Still, Teague should have been more careful with the ball in those closing seconds.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
I hate uk fans
Shut the he ll up we won
U act like we lost
Stop finding stuff to biotch about
Bunch of old grumpy sum biochs
December 4th, 2011 at 2:30 pm
How bout the Bo call when mkg has both arms ripped off?
December 4th, 2011 at 2:30 pm
I think the Inspector is right- he let go of the ball and that is not a walk. Besides, it’s not a walk unless it is called a walk. Just like when NC sent Kidd Gilcrhist to the floor after almost dislocating his shoulder was only our ball out of bounds. Also agree that Teague showed his immaturity by not protecting the ball.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
#25–noticed the same thing about Jones when he pivoted before the dunk. But if you notice , its never called in ANY game. Watched a Duke player switched pivot feet 3 times last year with no call. Nature of the game I guess.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
29…he did dislocate it according to his interview. He then snapped it back into place.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
I think he had another step or two coming before he needed to put down a dribble.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
Teague should have chucked the ball to the rafters to make sure the last few seconds went off the clock without getting fouled
December 4th, 2011 at 2:43 pm
Dead horse.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
I agree with #11. Even if the walk occurred at .08 seconds, the referee has to blow the whistle and the clock operator has to stop the clock. I’d submit that the horn would sound before the clock operator reacted. The most time the refs might put back on the clock would be .6 seconds (but would probably be more like .3 seconds) which means no dribble, no move, just catch and shoot. The in-bounds would be from half-court. Williams calls a timeout to draw up a play, but before they throw the ball in, Cal takes a timeout to draw up his defense, which takes away UNC’s first option. The chances of a field goal in this case are miniscule. The walk call/non-call is meaningless.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
He started the travel at .8 seconds left. He didn’t actually travel (put the third foot down) until the game was over or with about .1 seconds left. Not enough time to get up a shot
December 4th, 2011 at 2:45 pm
Dude you know you posted the same video but in much better quality three posts before this right? What’s with the “I jacked a low quality video (the best I could find) from YouTube”
Anyway moot point. Incredible block, awesome game.
December 4th, 2011 at 2:47 pm
My head hurts…
December 4th, 2011 at 2:47 pm
I thought he walked when I watched it live. I did a couple of re-winds just to see for sure. But it doesn’t really matter in this case. This incident like all others just needs to be something players learn from. By March all will be well, players will have grown up, plays will be perfected and the Cats will be hitting on all cylinders. Go CATS!!!
December 4th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
Geez, enough of this crap.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:08 pm
I hope Eamonn Brennan read that last paragraph (even though I’m pretty sure he’s not a rabid follower of KSR). Wrote in his post game analysis that it was an obvious missed call that potentially cost UNC the game! Garbage. You can tell that the Calipari haters were fuming yesterday that their theory of talent never defeats experience was debunked!
December 4th, 2011 at 3:16 pm
Patrick Sparks travelled before the three point shot, too!
December 4th, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Missed calls are in every game and northcarolina got the most of them, miller blocks Strickland on a jumper and it’s called a foul it was clean, the charge on Mkg where the defender moved into his path as he went for a layup. Point is your just crying cuz you lost deal with it!
December 4th, 2011 at 3:29 pm
All I see is a #1 next to Kentucky’s name….for a 2nd week in a row.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:30 pm
Most notable no call was when MKG almost had his forearm broken and laid on the floor in pain.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:35 pm
If the refs would have made that call, they would be admitting to trying to give the game to carolina. No ref would have made that call. At this point the game was over and that call could have gave the game to carolina.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:45 pm
We took off like the clock had run out. Someone needs to seriously knock Teague upside the head & knock some sense into this kid. Teague is starting to become the more talented version of Poole.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:46 pm
As long as one person caught Teague’s ear and told him not to do this again, consider it a learning opportunity.
December 4th, 2011 at 3:48 pm
y
December 4th, 2011 at 4:01 pm
First Gilchrist gets tomahawked then Doron Lamb gets called for what has to be the worst charge call I’ve ever seen yet the mothership’s writers say UNC “derserves” a rematch because Teague walked?!? Am I the only one that saw him get a forearm in the back as he was picking up the ball? This is just silly.
December 4th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
What was the call when they overturned the out of bounds call that should have been UK’s ball around the 3:30 mark?. There was NO WAY the ball was UNC’s. Then they hit a 3.
December 4th, 2011 at 4:25 pm
Love seeing Card fans whine. Here is a team that cheated against Vandy, such as Kuric sliding and kicking a Vandy player. What did the Big East refs call? Out of bounds against Vandy.
December 4th, 2011 at 4:30 pm
he dribbled until the clock ran down. how is that close to a walk?
December 4th, 2011 at 4:55 pm
I watched in slow motion multiple times. He didnt travel. If you watch it in slow motion, he takes two steps then with less than 0.4 seconds he no longer has control of the ball when he takes his third step. No travel.
December 4th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

December 4th, 2011 at 5:10 pm
All this whole thing is is the crybabies that think UK doesnt deserve to be #1 and it kills them that a team this young this early in the year is better than everyone else and will only improve. Even Roy Williams wasnt bitching about it at the end. UNC had almost 5 seconds to fould and push this game out but stood around looking stupid. Its their fault not Teagues. And I cant wait for UK to smack UL right in the mouth on New Years Eve and see how much they say we got lucky then
December 4th, 2011 at 5:16 pm
looks like a unc player fouled teague before the so called travel.
December 4th, 2011 at 5:34 pm
no whistle, no travel, done, let it go.
December 4th, 2011 at 5:49 pm
Just stop this second guessing shit….
December 4th, 2011 at 5:50 pm
What the hell is gained with this crap??
December 4th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
Clearly was pushed from behind by the UNC player. Get over it UNC had already accepted the fact they were going to loose.
December 4th, 2011 at 6:32 pm
Meanwhile, MKG is standing under the basket wide open for a dunk. So … yes, we could have just put one away at the end but UNC conceded so we didn’t.
December 4th, 2011 at 8:05 pm
Dicky Beal traveled against Illinois!
December 4th, 2011 at 8:18 pm
Sounds more like Kansas fans to me. Can you even
get a shot off with.8 seconds left?
December 4th, 2011 at 9:06 pm
That was a travel. You would have to be a freaking idiot to think it wasn’t.
December 4th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
It was not traveling! The end.
December 4th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
even if they did call the travel when his other foot actually hits the floor to make it a travel there is only .3 seconds on the clock only enough time by rule for a tip in no way they score anyway
December 5th, 2011 at 2:40 am
I thought it was a travel when I saw it live. Teague had a very poor ending to that game. Teague was lucky when Anthony bailed him out with a block, and Teague was lucky when the refs failed to call him on the last second travel. I’m hoping Teague improves so that his decision making matches his high level of talent, but at this juncture I would feel more comfortable letting Lamb play the point in the last minutes of a close game.
December 5th, 2011 at 8:59 am
Teague was clearly fouled at the end, just rewind it over and over again and you can see the push on his lower back before the travel.REF JUST COST THEM THE opportunity to go to the line with .9 left. Does not matter any UK won with .oo on the clock!
December 5th, 2011 at 11:19 am
Who cares?all the unc fans will shit their pants over this, just admit you lost to a beeter team #bowtothebrow
