Morgan Newton out 4-6 months

by @ 10:27 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

It was an ugly end to the season for Morgan Newton and it’s not getting any prettier going into the spring. Newton will miss 4-6 months after having shoulder surgery on a torn labrum this morning. The injury tells us a little bit more about the quarterback situation in the final five weeks of the season. I’ve been told Morgan was upset with his head coach because Joker was downplaying the injury. Joker would tell the media, “Newton is getting better” and “He’s taking more reps in practice” when really he should’ve just been declared out for the season. This almost made it seem like a “beat up” Newton was getting beat out for his starting job at quarterback.

With an experienced Max Smith and incoming freshman Patrick Towles fighting him for the starting job under center, Newton could be mulling over a transfer before his final season.

We wish him the best in recovery and would love to see him back in blue.

I’m not doing my job. 4-6 weeks or 4-6 months.

No worries, though, you guys write a ton, I would make the same mistakes.

  2. KSR Copy Editor Says:

And I forgot to put a question mark after my second sentence. I am a hypocrite. Crap.

  3. Blue Jesus Says:

Your title contradicts the bold statement, Drew.

  4. Me Says:

    4-6 months or 4-6 weeks?

  5. BTIbackRFgone Says:

    Who gives a flyin f***

  6. Calender Says:

So… is Morgan out 4-6 months, 4-6 weeks, 4-6 days, or 4-6 years?

  7. gvillecat Says:

Does little brother Langston stick with the Cats or start looking around?

  8. GoCats2 Says:

    Torn labia?

  9. Indiana St. Says:

Transfer to us….u won’t look like a deer in headlights here

  10. Chaz Bono Says:

    That sounds like it hurts

  11. Joker Blows Says:

Rumor has it Joker will resign rather than be fired soon. Apparently the Mary Jo issue along with the pathetic way he’s running the program has finally caught up with him!

  12. ReedyCreekBuc Says:

I hope he recovers quickly, but I could care less if he left. He is terrible as an SEC QB!

  13. Rabio Says:

this would not have happened if Noel Mazzone were the offensive coordinator

  14. Bill Says:

Morgan should come back as a tight end.

  15. DT in DC Says:

Same surgery that other QB (Ryan M.) that signed when Newton did had. It’s becoming more of a routine surgery (I had it b/c of a baseball injury), but it’s hard to come back 100% from, IMHO.

  16. Cablaw3 Says:

He has to leave or learn a new position. He will never make it to a next level at QB.

  17. Kernel Sanders Says:

NCAA is not like the NFL where teams are required to report fully on injuries. Why should Joker have disclosed the severity of Newton’s injury? So every team knew they didn’t have to prepare for Newton at QB? Better to keep them guessing, and I bet that’s why those comments by Phillips were made. Newton should move to TE. He’s not going to be a QB at any decent school so its stupid to transfer after 3 years eligibility are gone.

  18. Lex07 Says:

    18) Yes, that is probably EXACTLY why Joker made those statements. He is that good.

  19. gottodoit Says:

Joker strikes me as an ill-informed and non-detail oriented coach. Maybe he really didn’t know the extent of Morgan’s injury.

  20. rml4uk Says:

He’ll be out 4-6 months. I just had the exact same surgery a month ago (along with a torn rotator cuff repair for kicks and giggles) and recovery time is expected to be 4-6 months. I feel bad for the kid. Not just because of the way things worked out this season but because recovery for this surgery sucks. The other thing, though, is this surgery usually ends the careers of major league pitchers because they don’t get their velocity back after recovery. I’m assuming Newton will never be “100%” again even if he makes a full recovery.

  21. Mary Jo Says:

    #12 …

What are you talking about when you reference the “Mary Jo” issue???

  22. Streak ends in 11 Says:

He never was 100% to begin with. 50% at best so now he’ll be about 25%.

  23. Tc571 Says:

Two weeks out from my second labrum repair with rotator cuff repair. It is definitely difficult to come back from 100% I haven’t tried to throw overhand since my first one because it was so uncomfortable.

  24. drewsster02 Says:

I had a feeling this was worse than we were told. Joker didn’t want other teams to think that he couldn’t play. I noticed that when Newton went in for Smith in the Georgia game, he couldn’t throw it farther than 5 to 10 yards. I knew his shoulder was hurting much worse.

  25. kfund Says:

No point in transferring. Would have to learn a whole new system. Should move to receiver. He already knows where all the routes are designed to go (not very far at that either)

  26. tangledupinblue Says:

22- where have you been under a rock . I thought eveyone knew about Joker and his favorite local sports anchor .

  27. tangledupinblue Says:

Morgan hasn’t redshirted yet so thats an option .

  28. Irwin R. Fletcher Says:

“Joker was downplaying the injury”… Joker seems to have a problem with honesty.

  29. Syrin Says:

So Joker now down plays serious injuries and makes his players look bad in the process. Yet another reason to let him go.

  30. Cats fan Says:

I hope how soon THE JOKER is gone. I hear more than just Mary Jo that he is hitting on. Cheerleaders are too. Please hope the rumor about resigning becomes a reality.

  31. Joker Blows Says:

    22…YOU tell us!

  32. HoundDog Says:

I dont care about Da Joke But,,,
Some of you are slinging MJP’s Name around. Either give us the goods, and backup your trash or just shut the hell up.

  33. Calipari'sInYourEar Says:

Transfer? Transfer positions Morgan, your accuracy as a passer isn’t college grade at game time.

Lacking the toughness for fullback or linebackers, the speed for defensive backs, actually I think tranfsering sports might be the best best.

    Try college baseball.

  34. Calipari'sInYourEar Says:

Ok, I heard tight end might work. Not sure you can pass others on the depth chart who’ve been playing it their entire life. Yet, we could always use someone who WANTS to be on the field.

So tight end it is. Grow some balls and give yourself a chance to get back on the field.

  35. Da Ish Says:

Joker spent the summer up-playing Newton’s abilities, only makes sense he’d downplay his injury

  36. boomdaddy Says:

Should Newton stay at UK, he should put on 15 lbs, get down to 8% body fat, and be a full back. He is not a D1 QB. He would actually be a solid TE, if he bulked up a bit. Newton does not have the “it” factor that it takes to be a QB. I am not a coach, but I just can’t figure out why Joker and his staff didn’t get a juco QB for this past season. They kept saying that Newton was going to be a star.
